To use my husband's medication as a beauty product? (Photos)

Hi. In the US, you can buy a product to apply to your eyes daily to make your lashes grow thick and long. I think it might be the same thing as my husband's glaucoma meds.
Any chemists out there, or scientists, that could confidently tell me if these two products are exactly the same stuff?
Thnks in advance.

For goodness sake, this has to be a joke, no one in their real mind could be this shallow.

kali110 · 20/03/2017 21:10

Maudlinmaud yes i used rapidlash for ages and although my lashes did look a bit better, it wasn't amazing.
I think i'll try the castor oil though!

Robin7 · 20/03/2017 21:13

Of course YABU if you use his prescribed meds for vanity purposes. Essentially you're defrauding the NHS as the drops cost more than the prescription charge. Even more so if he happens not to pay for scripts. Did you really think anyone would say otherwise?
If you choose to buy independently then do what you want, but not sure it's worth it given the risks mentioned above!

notangelinajolie · 20/03/2017 21:13

Speaking as someone who uses Latanoprost.

It can also be used to prevent Glaucoma. I just wanted to make that point.

I can also catagorically guarantee that this product will not always make your eyelashes longer or thicker or both.

It has made my eyes turn from a lovely multi coloured hazel to a foggy dark brown dirge colour.

It makes my eyes very dry.

It makes hairs grow in the corner of my eyes which are almost impossible to remove due to the pain it causes it remove them.

It makes my eyelashes grow ramdomly inwards making blinking extremely painful.

It burns like hell when you put it in your eyes.

And if that isn't enough to put you off - if you use it combined with Tilolol as I do take a look at some of my side affects.

You will have palpitations sometimes.

You will suffer from dizzyness sometimes.

You will go bald.

Don't do it. Seriously if you want thicker and longer eyelashes invest in a good mascara.

BoffinMum · 20/03/2017 21:14

CaoNiMartacus haemorrhoid cream is pretty good for eye bags actually

highinthesky · 20/03/2017 21:17

This is vain cosmetic madness.

Talk about FWP.

Chewbecca · 20/03/2017 21:20

My husband uses this product on prescription to reduce the pressure in his eyes. He's being using it for about a year and his lashes have hugely thickened in that time, to the point they are irritating and in the way now.

I wouldn't dream of using his drops for vanity purposes, surely I would end up with too low pressure in my eyes? Why would you risk the side effects of a prescription medicine when you don't need to?

ArriettyClock1 · 20/03/2017 21:31

My mum has drops to treat increased pressure in her eyes. Her eyelashes have stayed the same. I know this as I dye them for her.

Wellhellothere1 · 20/03/2017 23:06

Hmmm. Doesn't seem to bother the lovely Dr Sam Bunting. She lists some safety points during the video. m.youtube.com/watch?v=eqNkY519vaw
To those thinking about castor oil to grow eyelashes-i think I have blocked my tear ducts doing this Blush My eyes tear and run so easily now. It's a bugger!
I'm a pharmacist and also agree that some generics don't have the same efficacy as the branded product. Too many patients have complained about this over the years for me to discount this. Also if generics had exactly the same characteristics as branded product why must many anti-epileptic medicines be prescribed and supplied as per brand name and not generic drug?

MissJC · 20/03/2017 23:10

No they aren't. One is Latanoprost the other is Bimatoprost. They belong to the same drug group but are not the same drug. The Bimatoprost will promote eyelash growth if applied very carefully to the lash line. I have used Bimatoprost and my eyelashes did grow very long and thick (people kept asking me if I had falsies on) and I am a registered pharmacy professional but the Latanoprost will not have this effect unfortunately. I have a friend who is a consultant who used to write me private prescriptions for Bimatoprost. Since I became pregnant I stopped using it and my eyelashes returned to normal very quickly.

kali110 · 20/03/2017 23:15

Wellhellothere1 my phatmacy said that my reaction may have been due to the different suppliers using different colourings or costings.
Though i have a branded painkiller as well now as when i had a generic one i used to have to take more than when i had the branded one Confused
It's not a placebo effect either as it's only 2 medications i take branded, the rest are whatever the pharmacy has in the back Grin

haveacupoftea · 20/03/2017 23:17

Yeah shove any old crap in your eyes, sounds like a great idea 🖒🙄

MissJC · 21/03/2017 00:16

Latanoprost is NOT generic bimatoprost. Latanoprost is generic Xalatan. Bimatoprost is generic Lumigan.

HappyAxolotl · 21/03/2017 00:51

Are you serious OP? Definitely don't dick about with your eyes and other people's drugs!

In addition to all the side effects others have already posted, a relative of mine has glaucoma and is prescribed eyedrops (no idea which type they are) and some of the generic ones cause them to have horrific nightmares nightly where they scream the house down and hurt themselves and their partner who still shares the bed after all this. It's not a common side effect but my relative was one of the rare cases it happens to.

There are mascaras and false lashes - why the hell put yourself at risk when you don't have to?

SSYMONDS · 21/03/2017 07:45

My goodness aren't you a fighty lot.

Miss JC and the others that actually have some insight on this - thanks.

To the condescending bores - stick it up your collective jumpers.

This thread has helped me work out what I want to know - that if applied carefully to the lash line it would probably promote lash growth, but there are risks so I'll give it a miss.

Ooh cadaver eyes. Sexy.

Bettyspants · 21/03/2017 08:23

Good decision op! Regarding the disagreement in generic re branded meds yes unfortunately certain brands do seem to work differently to generic I recently saw this in an epileptic patient who was prescribed the generic version of their more expensive branded med . In theory they should work the same but a few drugs are known to work slightly differently which really isn't great news for prescribing

Wellhellothere1 · 21/03/2017 08:43

OP I suspect you would get a more measured response if you posted in the Style and Beauty section where this kind of topic is discussed regularly Smile

SSYMONDS · 21/03/2017 08:59

Thanks wellhello and Betty. Will get myself over to S and B!

OP posts:
kali110 · 21/03/2017 12:42

No it is not being a bore, you could potentially damage your eyes not to mention stealing your partners medication!
Yes what a lot of bores Hmm

Mari50 · 21/03/2017 12:51

To be honest, if you can buy latisse or similar then go ahead (the lash growth I've seen on some people is totally amazing, but it doesn't work for everyone and anecdotally men seem to get the longer lashes more often) as long as you are aware of the side effects. However, using someone else's prescription drug as a beauty product is unreasonable- which was your original question.

SSYMONDS · 21/03/2017 13:17

Kali, its less about the message and more about your tone. You are definitely a bore.

OP posts:
Happyfeet1972 · 21/03/2017 13:31

And you're a massive dick OP. HTH. People concerned and shocked about you taking risks with your eyes are not bores. They are trying to stop you doing something with huge risks ffs.

Littleballerina · 21/03/2017 13:36

What is the point in having beautiful eyelashes if you can't see them because you've buggered your vision?
Yes, I'm a bore but I'm not the twat considering doing something so bloody stupid.

SSYMONDS · 21/03/2017 13:48

What's boring is the drama. The self-righteousness indignation and insults. I asked for anyone with a background in chemistry to answer a very specific question. Some people did. Thanks to them. Yawn to you.
Bye.
