To think it's a bit weird that people get power hungry over becoming an admin for a Facebook group?

Some act as if it's some all powerful job and they have real authority. But I just find it a bit strange going on about being an admin of a group that may have thousands of members but only a few hundred actually use it a month.

Hi!

Anyone who is an Admin of a busy group - how does it work? Do you have to be on duty at certain times, or do you just scroll through whenever you are free? Do you read every message posted or just have a glance and hope any dodgy ones get reported?

Elphame · 20/03/2017 20:14

Haha yes - I've been banned from so many FB groups I've lost count!

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 20/03/2017 20:16

I was in one parenting group where there was an actual election for new admins. The nominees - many - wrote little bios and statements to explain what they would bring to the role and how they would take the group forward.

I bet those elected put it on their future job applications!

Depends I'm one of a handful of admin on a very large and very busy group (for booking dog friendly holidays with holiday home owners). There are enough of us that at any time someone is around. It's a mix of scrolling through, approving posts and relying on the members spotting dodgy posts

Welshmaenad · 20/03/2017 20:18

There are six admins on my page, to 235k members. We don't do shifts, we just approve members/posts as and when we're online. We scan posts when we get time but any gunfights generally get reported and we get notifications about it.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 20/03/2017 20:27

I'm admin on some small groups. Some are of RL friends, some are are online friends in splinter off groups. I don't think I've done anything more adminy than add people and that was a while back. Shame, I could have done with updating my CV Grin

I'm in some large hobby groups that usually behave nicely with a supportive and humorous atmosphere. I wouldn't cope long in a group with a mentality like the comments section of the local newspaper!

Nocabbageinmyeye · 20/03/2017 20:28

We had a lovely group of mums all due the same time, we had meet ups and it was really nice. Two of the girls got in a little spat once, nothing major but one of the admins went along deleting comments of oneone (the one she liked) and leaving the others (the one she didn't), it blew it all out of proportion because, well, you just can't do that, you might be admin but we are a bunch of grown adults, as admin of a private group you can't control what we say and censor comments. Gobshite was high on the power

witsender · 20/03/2017 20:29

We just browsed and always tried to have a few online at a time. We had a chat group going so could chat off board. We'd also get tagged when anything exploded.

kennypppppppp · 20/03/2017 20:38

Hungry hippo - I was just about to type the same thing!!!

Mother of a kid at the school where I work listed her employment as "administrator [not admin.] of a chat group on the Internet"

She's asking for £80,000 for a 2% stake in her "business". Peter Jones et al are desperado to buy in.

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 20/03/2017 21:28

gunfights Shock

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 20/03/2017 21:30

Do the Admins private message each other and say "that post by hopelessly is borderline, keep an eye on her" or "that lady's dog friendly holiday home is really dirty, yuck" etc? Or do you stick to public conversations on the group wall?

HopelesslydevotedtoGu · 20/03/2017 21:36

I find Admins oddly compelling. The way they post their definitive verdict to a heated discussion with the prefix (Admin) and then turn off comments to have the final word. Do they miss that power in real life conversation?

I'm in one group where everyone loves the head Admin, her word is gospel, she is like an Oracle - she always has a definite opinion and writes very succinct posts, the group always agree with her or leave and her comments are generally the conclusion to any discussion. I met her in real life once once and she was utterly normal and a bit dull.

booox · 20/03/2017 21:41

I created a fb group for my martial arts group and then never did anything but add members till I realised I should treble check them. For a long time I forgot I was admin!

The only time I exercised my admin rights was to delete a very sexist comment - but was too timid to admit and messaged the other admin to tell him what I'd done 😳.

I'm a shit admin.

booox · 20/03/2017 21:44

(So hopelessly, there was a lot of behind scenes messaging about that one!)

I think they do for some groups. I'm in a bf peer support group that's very orderly and organised.

If a discussion has ever had to be halted, admin clearly have discussed it and given fair warning before closing it.

Hardly happened though. Usually an anon post that's then removed at their request.

Elphame · 20/03/2017 22:00

Most big groups have a "secret" admin group behind the scenes where things are discussed.....

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 20/03/2017 22:45

I'm on a local group page which is 'secret' and admins are funny about only letting people on from the area (although there are loads that aren't.)

They are all women and they think they can hold businesses to ransom by threatening bad reviews on xxxx page.

I'm on the page out of nosiness and it is an absolute eye opener. Hideous hideous women who all gang together and lick the admins arses.

A few of my friends are also on it, I think a large number of subscribers will be lurking on there and laughing at them rather than with them.

cheesyinkent · 21/03/2017 10:08

Glad it's not just me. One group seems to have more admins posting than civilians and they fell the need to constantly announce that they are an admin. No one cares. The only job they Need to do is delete the posts selling something that are spammy.

OP posts:
lessthanBeau · 21/03/2017 19:42

One of our local selling groups is run like bloody Hitler, it has so many rules that someone else set up another one called "the one with no rules as I have a life and presume you do too!"

QuinoaKeen · 21/03/2017 20:15

I was kicked off a vegan page. My crime? Asking a question about eggs and backyard chickens. Apparently it's a banned topic Grin.

Can't say I miss it though. Admin constantly posts about how tiresome the job is and then gets sycophantic replies of 'thank you for all you do. You're soooooo amazing.'

I'm in another vegan group where every post is vetted by admin. So I'll post a photo but have to wait an hour or so for an admin to okay it Confused.

To be fair, vegan groups do attract a lot of trolls, but I think some admins tend to go over the top with the power. Let us deal with the trolls sometimes. This is one of the most memorable Mumsnet threads, but you'd never see it nowadays: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/900801-Colic-cure-what-works-is-DENTINOX

CherryChasingDotMuncher · 21/03/2017 21:26

YANBU. I admin a couple of groups but it's very relaxed and really only about adding people and deleting dodgy posts. The other admins are very cool and we have a hands-off approach.

I hate when people get "trial admins in and the poor sod has to post random questions as their 'test'. It's a FB grouo FFS.

I also hate
ADMIN
At the top or bottom of every pot, especially if it's not relevant to admining.

And the worst are the admin martyrs - "we work so hard to keep this group going in our SPARE TIME for FREE and are very stressed" then do a spectacular flounce. Seriously if you're becoming ill over it bloody leave!

PinkFlamingo545 · 21/03/2017 22:01

I am on a gardening forum, where the admin is constantly attention seeking and making passive aggressive comments about people

''I hope you all enjoy the group I work so hard to bring to you''.... erm Fuck off you total dullard

''Roll call - who can see my posts'' at least once a week

Notification:- the group has changed to secret / private / public = several times a month

Constant complaints about how busy she is, but she doesn't work, and doesn't seem to want to appoint admin

I started up a facebook selling group and got fed up of being expected to police it - when It grew to several thousand , I was sick of getting notifications of people reporting each other so just left the group adminless... not enough time in the day

EduCated · 22/03/2017 08:38

One of the groups I'm on, the admin has some quite significant shit going on in their family life. Regularly posts from hospital, saying that she's at the hospital and that she's had to come from looking after relatives to sort this out. Cue lots of 'you're wonderful' posts.

You don't have to do this. You have chosen to. Particularly as they've made up loads of bollocks rules which they then have to try and enforce.

cheesyinkent · 23/03/2017 08:42

I've joined a few slow cooker groups, no drama yet..
