to want to keep the lost dog we found?

We found a lost dog tonight. She didn't have a collar on and was near a main road so I put my dogs lead and collar on and bought her home. She has been lovely, obviously we were extremely careful but she has been fabulous with our DC. She's very affectionate and happy and playful.

We posted on local Facebook pages but no one claimed her. Someone offered to scan her to see if she has been microchipped and she had, but the phone number wasn't working and the person who scanned her said she'd been returned to a different address when she was last bought to their attention. We tried there and there was no answer, the neighbours said they'd never seen a dog at that address.

The dog is a staffy and seems malnourished. The rules with the dog warden here are that if you're happy to keep the dog you can do for 28 days and then for good if no one claims them during that period. We'd happily take her on if she had nowhere to go but my only concern is our dog. He's a rescue so we're not sure precisely how old he is but he's at least 11 and possibly up to 13. He's a Jack Russel. So far they have been fine together outside but she hasn't been spayed, he tried to hump her and she growled at him, he growled at her and got off. There's been a few more growling incidents indoors but mainly they've ignored each other.

Obviously they're sleeping separately tonight and will not be left alone either together or with the DC but do you think this could be doable if the owner isn't located, or does initial agression show they won't get along?

Go on chocolate - one more won't make much difference! 3 dogs and 2 cats here - 4 of whom are rescues.

stonecircle · 20/03/2017 10:43

Chocolate = chocdee

ChocDee · 20/03/2017 10:56

Well my DH give me 'the look, head tilt and deep voice' combo last night telling me that he is not staying...

Fingers crossed for today - hopefully a tearful owner will come and scoop him up.

Sunny - are you absolutely sure you wouldn't want to import an extra cuddle monkey?!?

Op you need to look for the owners.
Don't assume because the dog is skinny that it is malnourished/uncared for.
The dog could have something wrong with it.
People always think one of my cats is malnourished ( he's fed several times a day) in actual fact he had something wrong and lost a load of his body weight, so now looks a bag of bones Grin.
Her owners maybe frantic.
We were when one of ours went missing Sad
If she is chipped why is only her age coming up?

FireSquirrel · 20/03/2017 12:39

If you wanted to give it a home that would be nice but by law (if in UK) you must report it as found to the dog warden first. Not wearing a collar or looking malnourished doesn't necessarily nean it has been abandoned or mistreated, it may have slipped it's collar, have been runni g loose for sometime which has caused the weightloss, be old and unable to keep weight on or have other health problems which affect it's weight, etc. It may have a loving family worried sick about it. Legally and morally you must make every effort to find the owner first.

We have found Goose's owner!!

He is being picked up this afternoon.
His name is apparently Jackson which is rather dull and he certainly does not respond to it so I will have to explain the now necessary name change.

His owner is apparently an equine expert so I may ask her to give Pony a once over! :)

But do I also ask her if she has perhaps also lost a certain Donkey? She does not live that far away... That would break my heart quite badly.

Mcakes · 20/03/2017 16:52

Agree with Floral and Cornflake this dog needs to be listed (with photo) on www.doglost.co.uk
If you have done everything possible to find owners and no-one claims then it looks like you have yourself a new dog Grin

Floralnomad · 20/03/2017 17:11

Well done choc , lovely that he's going home, Goose really suits him though .

ChocDee · 20/03/2017 18:35

It does! It really does!!! It is most excellent for hollering as well.
I definitely want a forever dog called Goose....
A forever dog named Goose would make me happy.

kali110 · 20/03/2017 18:41

choc you should def get a dog named goose!
Glad the owners have been found.
When we lost one of ours i was inconsolable Sad he'd lost his bloody collar too!

yecartmannew · 20/03/2017 19:11

Don't rely on the fact she has no scar to mean she hasn't been spayed. It depends how tidy the vet is.

My old terrier bitch only had 2 stitches and a scary about 3 cm long. My current chinese crested bitch had a 2cm scar and 2 stitches. She is hairless and you cannot see a scar at all

Hoptastic53 · 20/03/2017 23:45

We are keeping her!

It turns out she's only three and a staffy cross dalmatian. I tracked down her owner who said she'd split with her ex who wasn't caring for her and so the dog kept running back to her house so they agreed neither could be responsible for her and have changed the chip details over to me Grin

It had said on the chip that she isn't spayed so I'll have to sort that plus immunisations as her previous owner wasn't sure if she'd had them all. She has been wonderful with the DC today and only a few growling/snapping incidents with our dog. Mostly they're avoiding each other, tolerating one another in the same room and she's backing down to him.

The previous owner had children too so is going to keep in touch so she knows how she's getting on. So long as her and our other dog work it out then it looks like a happy ending!

Aw so glad you have a happy ending.

Two of my dogs have issues with each other - jealousy based aggression. The main aggressor has to be removed sometimes when I spot signs of a potential fall out, and they are never left alone together. It's not easy but it can work. Hopefully they learn to rub along ok though, most dogs do.

haveacupoftea · 21/03/2017 00:03

(By removed I mean put into another room, separated by a baby gate)

CrikeyPeg · 21/03/2017 02:00

nice update Grin

ChocDee · 21/03/2017 09:09

Congratulations Hop! That is a lovely ending!

Goose went back home yesterday - his owner did ask whether we wanted to keep him. Not a deep rooted love going on there so I am pretty sure he will be back to visit.

She didn't even notice that he was gone as she says that he quite often refuses to come inside at night and since they also live on a farm there is obviously no fences.

Not the way I chose to conduct my life but I did notice that Goose had spectacular cloth ears!

She also said that all her cats had ran away from home because of him. I did NOT mention a certain stray Donkey that I was hiding in the kitchen.

Anyway - congratulations to Hop and family!!!

Mcakes · 21/03/2017 10:04

Great news Grin
Sounds like she'll have a fab life with you!

paddypants13 · 21/03/2017 15:43

Yey! I love a happy ending. Does she have a name? Smile

Wishiwasmoiradingle2017 · 21/03/2017 15:47

Love a happy 'tail'!!
