Girls trampolining and leotard glue AIBU to be shocked

So my friends 10 yr old DD has taken up trampolining. she's showing great promise and is competing already. However I was totally shocked when she told me that they aren't allowed to wear pants and therefore have to use leotard glue to keep it in place. They are also not allowed to wear bras. Boys who do the same routines wear tracksuit bottoms.

AIBU to think this is a sexist outmoded practice and actually a bit creepy?

OP posts:

I did competitive trampolining for years and we were banned from shorts. I was 17 when we did a national and I had to go and get some landscaping done which was unheard of in the 90s
Doing the straddle was particularly treacherous. We also had to wear a really severe bun with a fuck load of spray to keep it in place x

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 19/03/2017 22:37

When DD was competing in rhythmic gymnastics, she wore a skirted leo or a catsuit, which is standard. The judges don't seem to have any difficulties discerning leg extension and placement.
When she was older, she sometimes wore high-cut seamless knickers. For comps, hair was in a bun, or if not long enough for a bun, back off the face with a soft alice band, to match the leotard. I can appreciate that tying long hair back and up makes sense for gymnastics.

cheesuskriste · 19/03/2017 22:38

Boys tend to wear those really tight lucrative jockey style pants, but as my boy is 3 I would think know that much about gents underwear I'm afraid.

Gents either wear shorts or if they wear trousers it the ones like male gymnasts wear.

cheesuskriste · 19/03/2017 22:40

Queen- that's only referring to my daughter as her hair is long enough to be worn up. Not sure about short hair but I can ask her tomorrow

cheesuskriste · 19/03/2017 22:43

Lucrative- lycra ffs.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 19/03/2017 22:46

Svetlana Khorkina used to wear her hair short. I think she had it gelled so it was off her face.

Ethylred · 19/03/2017 22:51

Bit early for an April Fool isn't it?

QueenOlivine · 19/03/2017 22:53

OK I take back my (most recent :)) rant - I thought people were saying there had to be a bun or plait.

MeadowHay · 19/03/2017 22:56

No YANBU, there are still so many gross outdated double standards that exist in terms of what women athletes are expected to wear compared to what men athletes are expected to wear. It's ridiculous that it's 2017 and we still expect little girls to use such a thing as "leotard glue" instead of just wearing their normal bloody undies Shock !

TheSnowFairy · 19/03/2017 22:56

Misread title as leopard glue Confused

hollinhurst84 · 19/03/2017 23:00

I wear a bra with wires while horse riding but there's a v v v limited range of sports bras in my size!

QueenOlivine · 19/03/2017 23:04

leopard glue :o Does sound like more fun.

ScoobyDoosTinklyLaugh · 19/03/2017 23:10

Proper laughing at lucrative pants Grin

I did gym when I was little and loved all the skimpy sparkly leotards and bum glue but looking back it is a bit weird.

Goldfishjane · 19/03/2017 23:14

WTAF
If boys can wear something to cover their legs, the girls should be able too
Blatant discrimination.

lyricaldancer · 19/03/2017 23:31

It depends somewhat on the club. In gym some clubs/competitors compete in shorts or even leggings.

Trampolining also, nonsense to no bra etc. Bras and underwear allowed, boys and girls, but they're supposed to blend in with the costume and not be visible. There are also, certainly in gym, restrictions on how high cut the leotard can be.

Strange how you get used to the glue, even for socks and ballet shoe ribbons (dance)

lyricaldancer · 19/03/2017 23:35

Oh and you can wear unitards to compete for trampolining (girls) and what look like nude tights.

honeyroar · 19/03/2017 23:38

I can't get my head round a sport that deducts points for seeing a knicker line or bra strap. There's no sport to that, they're pervy buggers. And I don't buy the needing to see the muscle excuse either, it's pure sexism. I think ice skating uses the same leotard glues too. I thought dressage was bad enough with its fussy turnout, but it least it doesn't count in the Mark!

lyricaldancer · 19/03/2017 23:46

They deduct points from the boys if shorts are visible too. If underwear is nude or matches the leotard then it's fine. I don't think there's anything 'pervy' going on. Bandages and supports have to be 'invisible' too.

NonnoMum · 19/03/2017 23:47

Having watched a lot of dance, can I just say it would be totally weird to see someone's polka dot knickers peeking out under their tutu...
I don't think it's sexism. It's aesthetics.

lyricaldancer · 19/03/2017 23:48

Yes quite, Nonnomum.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 19/03/2017 23:54

There was an awful video doing the rounds on FB a year or two ago of a gymnast on the bars when her leotard tore wide open at the crotch just as she was doing full splits in an aerial movement. She wasn't wearing any pants and needless to say, the video showed absolutely everything she'd got...like something out of a porn film. She must have been mortified beyond belief, poor girl. With this in mind, I'd definitely be trying to find some skin colour pants with no VPL.

PyongyangKipperbang · 20/03/2017 00:02

Its not the leotard/no underwear rule so much for me as the fact that boys are allowed to wear tracksuits and the girls are not.

Thats discrimination surely, because if it was for safety, aero dynamics etc then the boys would have to wear them too.

I would be kicking up a massive fuss.

DickToPhone · 20/03/2017 00:15

that FB video was probably a virus

phishlist.com/facebook-scam-this-gymnast-broke-her-gymnastics-leotards-in-a-competition-in-france/

I found some images, but they are faked.

doesn't appear to have actually happened.

Justsaynonow · 20/03/2017 00:18

honeyroar No, ice skaters don't use glue. Female skaters have to wear tights with a skating dress, or a unitard, when competing. Some use tape to keep a low back from gaping. There's no rule about underwear but most female skaters don't when competing as they don't want it to show. They can wear panty liners if they want, but most tights have a cotton gusset that's like underwear. Bras either have clear straps or are built into the costume. No rules on hair either, but it's difficult to jump/spin with hair in your face so most put it in a bun. Probably more info than you've ever wanted Grin

I agree about the unfairness of rules for different sexes for trampolining & gymnastics, but the one that really gets to me is beach volleyball, where the sides of the bottoms have a maximum measurement for women. Every time I see the Olympics event I get annoyed.

graciestocksfield · 20/03/2017 00:28

The norm should be a leotard with shorts, no need for glue then.
