Would you play a TV show on a train without headphones?

On a train (about 2 hours) today and there was a woman sitting on there (quite busy, as in all the seats are taken but no one standing). Anyway, she was watching some tv shows the whole way but didn't have any headphones in. I was sitting 3 rows behind her and could hear the show word for word. Surely this isn't actually acceptable? I dread to think how annoying it was for the people sat at her table (she was on her own)

I definitely would have said something, you would have been well within your rights to.

I wouldn't no, but plenty of people do, young, old, in groups, alone on trains and buses.

Definitely not acceptable, but more and more people seem to act as if they live in their own bubble when out in public

Phew... so glad I'm not being unreasonable. I was actually 2 rows behind her... or in front, whichever way you look at it. She was sat on a table facing me but I was in the seat behind the person opposite her if you see what I mean. I'm so surprised too. Every time someone got up they rolled their eyes and sighed (so British!) But no one said anything!

Last week, at 06:40am, I shit you not, there was an adult on the train watching fecking Stampy videos (fellow minecrafter-parents will feel my pain)

And yes I did ask him to turn it off, and yes he did albeit with a gormless look on his face like he was genuinely surprised anyone else could hear it

I've inadvertently done this - headphones weren't fully pushed into the jack. Of course, that meant that it was really faint, and I thought my headphones were giving up the ghost, so I just ramped the volume up higher

It was 45 minutes, and I only realised when I got my things together to get off the train . No-one said a word to me.

I wouldn't dream of it. But is there an actual rule? Given that people can talk as loudly as they want, be on phone etc.

Not really - shouting is also not acceptable in a public, confined area.

But the main difference is that we process 'electronic' sounds differently from actual people having conversations. Two people beside us talking will be way less intrusive than a TV show playing from speakers at the same volume.

Think I read something recently about someone who realized that a man hiding in a hoody sat near her on a train was actually watching porn indiscreetly

As for the woman on your train she was selfish, as was the man smoking all the way from Peterborough to Nottingham on a train I was on once and no one dared say anything because he was huge and looked evil

YANBU. it's like the people with those outrageously obnoxious portable speakers that walk around playing their music for all to hear. I think there should be a mandatory prison sentence!

shouting is also not acceptable in a public, confined area.

Tell that to the football and rugby supporters I've been on the train with loads of times

Sorry, I went off on a bit of a tangent there!

I don't know. In the quiet carriage definitely, not sure about elsewhere. I'd imagine it could be construed as anti-social behaviour, especially if the person was asked to use headphones and refused.

Me and my sister did this once. We were both very drunk and it was about 1am so the train was pretty empty. It was Game of Thrones and on hearing the theme music a group of lads, also very drunk, actually came and sat with us so they could watch too.

Wouldn't do it again though and definitely wouldn't on a busy train.

YANBu it seems more common these days. Why people dont seem to understand what is acceptable and what isnt i dont know. I had it on a flight with some selfish numpty playing peppa pig to his kid for three hours. It is honestly like you have sworn at some of these idiots when you ask them to turn it down.
The only thing to solve ths isssue is to do what the majority think is obvious, which is to remind the socially stupid to put earphones into their devices or mute them by putting up signs or announcements. So many selfish twats out there!

I witness this frequently in the coffee shop I go to regularly. It's just another shining example of so many people's sense of entitlement these days. They just float around on their own little planet,completely oblivious as to how their behaviour may impact on other people. I saw a prime example of this on the bus about a week ago. About 9pm,bus was fairly empty. Guy aged about 20 gets on and promptly starts playing music out loud on his phone/iPod. And I do mean 'out loud'. After a few minutes,a woman sitting quite near him (thankfully he was at the opposite end of the bus to me) says 'Please turn that down or use earphones as I don't wish to hear it'. Cue a barrage of abuse from him,ranging from 'Do I know you? Why should I have to do what YOU ask?' To 'Shut the fuck up man,don't talk to me' and then turning the volume up higher! She told him to stop swearing so he proceeded to let rip with every swear word he could think of,over and over again. Thankfully he got off the bus shortly after that,making a rude gesture at the woman as the bus drove off. Sigh .....

I HATE this. I see it fairly frequently. People, usually teenagers, wandering along with their i-phone ostentatiously stuck out in front of them with their choice of music blaring for all to hear.
It is SO RUDE!!
They are also lucky they dont get said phone nicked on a regular basis.
