To not really buy any "snack foods" as part of my weekly shop?

DD is complaining that we don't have any "nice snacks" like her mates do.

I like a bit of a biscuit or some crisps as much as anyone but A we're on a tight budget and B I don't think it's a good idea to include processed snacks in with your weekly shopping.

We DO have loads of fruit/salad/unsalted mixed nuts/eggs/bread/beans/cheese/jam/peanut butter/honey/plain yogurt

So. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, my DC have a choice of all the above if they get extra hungry.

I'm not mean but I can't add cheese strings and whatnot to my list as it mounts up too much then and that's crappy food.

About once a week I buy a couple of those grab bags of crisps and a big bar of chocolate and the DC will share them over a movie. So they're not devoid of snacks...AIBU though?

YANBU I do buy those things but they are strictly for outside the house (DCs are home ed so we are often out and about all day between various activities and take these things with us for convenience) so if they ask for it at home it's a no. I need to get better at making stuff myself though. It costs a bomb

I never buy packaged/processed snack foods. I buy nuts and dried fruit loose, and I buy fruit, cheese and yoghurt (direct from the farmer).

YANBU

Snacks are (1) really expensive and (2) very unhealthy.

I saw my local general store had started selling bagged kid's lunches the other day and they're awful! A sandwich with "fritz and sauce"

this is fritz

A bar of chocolate and a carton of milkshake plus an apple and they're ten dollars each! I watched a woman buy three of them! Thirty dollars on one day's lunches.

I do buy biscuits and some chocolate but my babies are still very young so they do have the odd biscuit but mainly it's and me & dh they are for and even we don't have biscuits or chocolate every day, everything in moderation.

My babies do snack but they have cheese chunks, or chopped fruit/veg for a snack

OMG that's like 'billy bear' meat I used to love it. Dread to think how much crap it contained.

I'm lucky that DS loves cheap fruit so he can always be appeased with a plum or apple etc. DD has expensive taste in fruit 🙄 but really likes seeds and some nuts so that's her go to snack now. They are happy with carrot sticks and that kind of stuff too although DS is pretty fussy with veg

I really need to get better at baking but I'm rubbish, also our oven is really unreliable and everything just goes wrong! 😳

We do buy snack stuff mainly biscuits but for me and dh as dd is only 7 months old she gets a rich tea now and then but that's it.

RatOnnaStick · 19/03/2017 12:39

Dh sometimes gets annoyed at the lack of specific snack food in the house at the weekend but he does agree that if I buy it, the kids will just fill up on that alone so he keeps quiet mostly.

He's been working on our bathroom over the last few Saturdays so I have left savoury stuff in the fridge for him while we're out - pork pie, mini quiche etc but that's his lunch not for just picking at.

I do my weekly shop ( have recently had to really budget due to a coffee-laptop mishap) and I still manage to get all my fresh veg and fruit and meat , plus any extras like butter, sauce, spices etc for around £30 (just for me) - when I decided the other week to get a few sweets and rice cakes and a couple of pringles cans - it sky rocketed ! I was so annoyed ( but I have also realised that I get really bad cravings on a night and due to the no other food thing I ate some really weird shit 😂 tell them if they want more then they can buy it with they're own money x

I only go down the chocolate/ biscuit/ crisps type aisles of the supermarket if there's a specific need. The DCs end up with plenty of bits and pieces here and there from things like a birthday at school/ nursery, and I don't mind buying things for a specific moment. I just don't want it freely available in the house for any passing fancy. There's plenty that the DCs can eat if they are genuinely hungry, and because the things we have in aren't the most moreish, I don't get badgered about it out of habit.
