Lying about child's age for free admission

Costing out a day trip to the zoo, now that DC has turned two have to factor in their ticket cost. DH says that we should just say he isn't yet two so it's free, and that everyone does it. Just wondered what the general consensus is on this? I feel bad lying but see his point that DS is still pretty young and could end up napping through a lot of it so won't necessarily benefit.

Theme parks should be based on height rather than age
Fine in theory, until you have a very tall 20 month old who could pass as tall enough for some roller coasters that in no way would you put a 20 month old on. Happened to us two years ago, he was too tall for small wobble soft play at Alton Towers and they expected us to let him on the big Wobble one instead (that one is completely unaccompanied).

I'm taking a wild guess , but all those that say they wouldn't lie only have 1 child? Or their children are not yet at paying age? I might be wrong though, just a hunch

I said that I wouldn't and you're wrong about the amount of children I have. Its 5 and the youngest one is severely disabled. I also have 6 grandchildren that I often take on holidays and days out throughout the year. Ive never done it and dont intend to start. Its dishonest but more to the point its involving your loved ones in your dishonesty.

mrspeelywaly
I hope you're enjoying the view from your high horse

Blinkyblink · 18/03/2017 06:38

She just sayes that she wouldn't lie and wouldn't involve her loved one in a lie.

If you think that is taking the high horse, that says an awful lot about you!

princessconsuelabananahammock1 · 18/03/2017 07:14

I used to go to a soft play area who told me to lie about my little un because she felt the age bracket was unfair haha deffo little white lie.....they have more money than you have!! Realistically how much is a 2 year old going to get from it xxx

Trifleorbust · 18/03/2017 07:16

So many people happy to be flagrantly dishonest - not very MN of them. I wonder how many of these names I would find on threads about benefit fraud/tax evasion/speeding offences...

Factorysettings · 18/03/2017 07:25

I love this idea on Mumsnet that people who don't pay honestly cause price hikes for everyone else.

Companies charge the most they can get away with until it hits a tipping point where people are put off buying it at all in sufficient numbers that it's less cost efficient to charge more.

Can you imagine a shareholder's meeting where they said,

"Right guys, we could have delivered more profit this year but all out customers are so honest we didn't have the heart to charge more"

DurhamDurham · 18/03/2017 07:25

We reached the front of the queue to get into a stately home, just as we reached the man who was going to let us in my daughter tugged at my sleeve and asked "How old am I supposed to be today?" Blush

We did change the girls ages depending on circumstances and on this occasion you had to be five or over to get in the house. Still, they've both grown up into law abiding adults so no long term damage was done Smile

Trifleorbust · 18/03/2017 07:28

Factorysettings:

If profitability is affected by people not paying when they should be paying, of course prices may rise for everyone.

mummytwoshoes · 18/03/2017 07:28

Lots of interesting points for both sides. DS has only just turned two so I do see the point that had as gone a few weeks ago the cost would be different. I'm thinking of going to the ticket desk, asking for two adult tickets and not mentioning DS ticket unless we're challenged. We will be getting coffees, treats and lunch there so will be paying for him in that sense!

Factorysettings · 18/03/2017 07:29

No, it wouldn't. Because they would charge the same amount regardless of honesty because that is the most their customers are willing to pay.

Robinkitty · 18/03/2017 07:30

I'd lie if it wasn't obvious, a few month here and there.
I did tell an age related lie once, said ds was a year older than he was so he could do something, never again I felt so guilty, still do Years on, that was a big mistake. Ds had a great time though but I was stupid for doing it

Trifleorbust · 18/03/2017 08:04

Factorysettings:

They will charge the same amount regardless of honesty, but not regardless of profits. If the result of dishonesty is that profits are lower than expected, they may well raise prices.

SookiesSocks · 18/03/2017 08:28

How would they know that though Trifle ?

They dont count free children in their admissions profit projection. So how would they know profits are down?
They dont know the exact amount of under 5s in the uk and then calculate how many of those they expect to visit their venue.

They base profit projection on the previous years admissions and increase those admissions projections if they have a new attraction that will pull in visitors. It has nothing to do with how many none paying visitors they have.

Trifleorbust · 18/03/2017 08:31

SookiesSocks:

Of course they will project revenue from 5 year olds.

SookiesSocks · 18/03/2017 08:37

How?

If 5 yo are free there is no admission revenue to predict.
They may predict profit from food/drink sales from 5 yo but they cannot predict an admissions profit if they dont charge it.

Trifleorbust · 18/03/2017 08:39

Sorry, I was assuming free for under 5s. Whatever the age at which a child would usually be charged for entry, the zoo will include those children in their projections. If parents are routinely lying about their children's ages, the zoo is losing revenue. It's not hard to understand.

But it's wrong either way.

SookiesSocks · 18/03/2017 08:48

The zoo would not know it is losing revenue Trifle.

1 year there maybe 10,000 free visitors the next 8, 000 they dont lower their prices when that happens because none paying visitors are not counted in profits.

They count all of the visitors when it comes to food and drink profits but not all visitors when it comes to admissions if they allow some of those in for free. How could they?

SookiesSocks · 18/03/2017 08:50

It's not hard to understand.

You are right it isnt so why are you not getting it?
