To think people who post here asking if they should go to the doctors

or to the vets are complete morons.

If you or your child is sick/ injured and your worried. Phone up 111 ( how difficult is it, really?) or go to A&E. Likewise if you're worried about your pet, for godsake, call up the vets and tell them on the phone the symptoms ( as pets can go down hill very fast).

Am I the only one who sees these threads and feels like this?

OP posts:
Sylvannas · 16/03/2017 22:28

Agreed. Probably takes less effort to ring 111 than it does to post the whole story on MN.

Although to play devil's advocate it's also nice to get other mothers opinions on some things.

ImFuckingSpartacus · 16/03/2017 22:34

I don't mind the OP's really, I do mind the donkeys that say go to A& E for absolutely everything, smugly trilling "better safe than sorry". These are the gombeens clogging up the place with their clearly perfectly fine child who had a cough, or a very slight bang on the head.

They piss me off.

SparklyUnicornPoo · 16/03/2017 22:49

Moron is a horrible, offensive term but YANBU to think some of them are idiots.

111 is bloody useless by the way, last time I called them about DD they sent a totally unnecessary ambulance, I'd already told them i just needed some advice on pain relief to get her through to her GP appointment in the morning and that we were 5 minutes walk from OOH if they really thought she needed to be seen that night, yet when Dsis phoned them she was told to take some ibuprofen and see the GP if its not any better in the morning, her appendix burst less than an hour later.

WorraLiberty · 16/03/2017 22:50

I think Mumsnet is great for advice, but if I needed medical advice I wouldn't turn to any internet randoms. I'd either phone 111 or a pharmacist (if medicine related).

It doesn't bother me that other people choose to do things differently though.

Having said that, I can't believe how many people start threads asking if there's a doctor here, and then blindly believing that 'User183849264932728' is a real doctor, just because they say they are.

That's just bloody silly and it makes me wonder how they manage to keep their kids safe on the internet, when they're that gullible themselves.

marriednotdead · 16/03/2017 23:06

Thanks for putting me off posting a thread. I'm not a moron Hmm

I've had tests for one thing which came out out clear, but have thrown up two other potentially significant issues that may or may not need treating. GP hasn't contacted me to discuss results and appointments are hard to schedule. So what would you do if you were me OP?

Lionking1981 · 16/03/2017 23:21

I don't think 111 is useless at all. I have worked in telephone triage in the past and it's bloody hard. The problem with it lies in that the callers don't always have the common sense to answer the triage questions correctly. Some people exaggerate their symptoms and some downplay them so as not to cause a fuss. You only get offered an ambulance if you answer yes to the life threatening trigger questions. I have called them a few times for my kids - I got an a appointment for them twice and got told to make a normal gp appointment the other time. Fine.

Chinchinwag · 16/03/2017 23:36

ExplodedCloud that's brilliant the people on MN realised it was a ruptured ectopic pregnancy! When I had mine ( I had no idea I was pregnant) and I called 111 about pain and bleeding, the person on the phone asked if I was just on my period Hmm Yes because I'm going to dial 111 because I am on my period! Hmm

SparklyUnicornPoo · 16/03/2017 23:55

Lionking1981 actually according to the paramedics that came out it had been happening a lot lately, since the local hospital started closing services because of cut backs, I am very sure nothing I said would have been one of the life threatening trigger questions, I had even told them 3 times that I could actually get her to A&E quicker than they could get an ambulance to me because of the one way system

EatSpamAmandaLamb · 16/03/2017 23:57

111 send an ambulance every time I phone them. I have conditions which are to do with my heart and brain as soon as I tell them my symptoms they send an ambulance. I rarely need one, I just need to speak to a doctor or a nurse. Asking on here or somewhere similar is helpful.

EmeraldScorn · 17/03/2017 00:08

I posted the other night RE my diabetes; I don't think I'm a "moron" for doing so but to each their own!

MrsRyanGosling15 · 17/03/2017 00:12

YANBU. I don't understand this either. Why would you take any advice from here? Just because someone says they are a doctor or a nurse? There was someone on here the other week asking for dosage of a medication to give to her baby. Someone told her and she just believed them! A medication which isn't even usually given to the under 2's over the counter! I am a nurse and my dh is a surgeon however we wouldn't dare give medical advice here apart from 'contact a professional' and hopefully any half decent medical professional wouldnt either. I think people forget they can also just walk into a pharmacy and have many issues dealt with there too.

Lionking1981 · 17/03/2017 00:12

I am truthful. They use a triage system. It is a question and answer assessment tool. The way you answer the questions determines the care you get . if you exaggerate, unfortunately an ambulance will be offered. You have an option of refusing it too if you feel its not needed. An ambulance is generally sent with consent unless in extenuating circumstances.

loaferloveforyou · 17/03/2017 00:19

I have a current problem. Wasn't sure if I should go doctors and was considering asking AIBU but was too chicken I googled it which says I should go doctor. I mentioned it (and the symptoms and what Dr Google said) to my colleague and was met with a Hmm

I just don't know what to believe anymore haha so I'm going to continue in uncomfortable silence and mention it to the doctor when I'm next there.

I'll never forget the OP who nearly died if it wasn't for AIBU so I'm going to say YABU. I'd rather people ask if they are unsure than put their health at risk.

WayfaringStranger · 17/03/2017 00:23

YABU to use such a nasty term. Also, some people call NHS 111 and sit, waiting for a phone call back. Your "advice" to go to A&E is specularly poor.

GreyStars · 17/03/2017 00:23

It must be wonderful to be perfect and never have a moment of self-doubt.

Many people are not wanting to take up precious resources because they are kind considerate people who don't want to "bother" anyone.

Now taking advice on medication is not the most sensible option in my opinion, but asking for advice in moments of self-doubt is just being human, and in some cases has saved lives.
