Cancel the cheque

I was reading some spoilers on Neighbours this evening and they were hinting at one of the characters who has just been conned out of $100K flying to London. The very first comment under the article on Facebook was, 'why didn't he just call the bank and cancel the cheque!'

Aibu to assume that this was a mumsnetter?! Grin

Elderly Korean Lady is where an OP gave away her greenhouse and the donee spent the best part of a day dismantling it while his grand/mother sat at the bottom of OP's garden. It sounds boring written like that but was quite touching. I read it in Classics.

Haha Puzzled ! Did you ever hear from the grasping couple again?

AliceByTheMoon · 16/03/2017 10:04

Sometimes if I am feeling stressed I re-read Elderly Korean Lady.

It's a very peaceful thread.

(It's in Classics).

No Chloe, I didn't; they tried to stir up trouble over all the fuss it caused, of course, but not with me directly - and happily, most folk were so disgusted that it did them no good

Anyway, let's not start all that up again, eh? Sad

I stole the cheque thing for my username Grin

It was a not too old thread where a woman had sent a cheque to a friend who was getting married. In return, she received a card saying that her contribution didn't match her well wishes or something and basically asked for more money!

A tirade of "cancel the cheque" then appeared, but I think the initial cheque had been cashed anyway?

And Maui was just funny Grin crazy bridezilla who thought her wedding was a monumental event that everyone should spend a fortune on to attend.

The Mexican house stealers remain my favourite though Grin

Oh the irony of people telling the cancel the cheque origins without reading the full thread and ascertaining that a lot of others have already explained Grin

There was an American version of a cancel the cheque wedding involving a gift of a food hamper and a rude response saying they should have given money

Puzzledandpissedoff · 16/03/2017 13:58

Possibly the most appalling quote from the American one: "Weddings are to make money for your future" Sad Awful, too, that there are plenty in the UK who clearly feel the same way

Worryingly, I've got another horror looming into view with the recent engagement of a friend's son - an utterly over-indulged and petulant young man who has form for monstrous sulking if someone dares to buy him a gift for his birthday instead of handing over the cash he demands

At least I'll know where to post about it when it happens, though ...
