AIBU?

AIBU to NOT buy 9 y.o. DD a doll?

DD would love an Our Generation doll for her 9th birthday. AIBU unreasonable to say she is too old to receive one for her birthday although I am very happy for her to play with the huge number of dolls she already owns? Problem is none of her existing dolls are Our Generation and "all her friends" have them. My issue is they are not cheap and surely her doll playing days are limited now. On the other hand how lovely she still wants to play with dolls instead of electronic toys and maybe I should encourage this for as long as possible? What do you think oh wise mums?

I thought 9 years old would have been bang on the middle of the target market range for these dolls Confused.

Buy the doll! You should encourage this kind of play for as long as you can in this day and age!

Round here most nine year olds are tramping the streets in groups of 6 or 7 getting up to no good, breaking things, spitting and swearing!

Think yourself lucky that she still wants to play with a doll!

9 is not too old for dolls. We buy dolls for the girls in our family right up to 11. When they go to high school, they won't want them then as they will feel much more 'grown up' mixing with people as old as 16. (And 16 is very 'grown' when you're only 11.)

Update - naturally particular OG doll DD is craving was out of stock everywhere but have now managed to find one that should be back in stock in time. Fingers crossed! So DD will now be the happy recipient of the doll AND 3 outfits for her birthday. Feeling quite excited myself now...
Thanks everyone.

DD got a doll for her 12th birthday last year, it was one from the same range as her best friend has

They both are craft orientated and sit making clothes, accessories, rooms for them

The rest of the time they play computer games, are on phones, going to look at clothes in the shops

The dolls give them an outlet to still be young

my daughter wants a designafriend doll for her 8th birthday and i was a bit hmmm as she has never really played with dolls much. Her friends have one and as people have said, I would prefer she wanted that than makeup or something older!

Yabu

There are kids in our street aged 12 and still like Monster High etc.

Let her have the freedom to be herself.

My auntie and uncle bought my 11 year old cousin a £60 doll, thats what she was wanted so thats what she got. Shes very grown up for her age so we all were quite shocked when she asked for it but she loves sitting their doing th dolls hair and changing her clothes. I loved dolla until i was about 12 i think, 9 is still a child

Of course you should get her one!

Or just let her become a sheep like the rest if her friends, buy her an iPhone and encourage "selfies"

My 9 year old son likes playing on the Xbox and also with his teddies. Sometimes at the same time (the teddies tend to loose). Whatever you may think "playing" with toys is still very much a thing at 9 (and even 10 and 11).

She'll be over the moon. I'm glad you decided to get it for her Smile 9 is the perfect age for dolls!

Oh yes, my neighbours 13 year old son still likes Lego and his teddies. I know a 30 something who collects dolls, she is a professional with her own house and car.

Yes, just get her the doll.

My DD is 11 and although doesn't play so much with her dolls now (she's never been massively into dolls anyway) she will still pull them out when friends come over and they play together.

I think it's lovely that she still wants stuff like this. I see so many kids of that age being pushed towards make up, heels and stuff that is just far too teenage. Embrace her love for child stuff for as long as possible.

My DH is 39. He has a teddy. Is he too old?

aeroflot My DD is going on a sleepover this weekend with a social group. She is worried about taking her teddy because she thinks the others will take the piss. She's 11. How sad is that? I've told her to take her teddy and reminded her that her older step sister (also going and is 13) still has her teddy bear too.

Too much pressure on kids to grow up too fast. Far too much.

That is very sad Mycatsa, it seems like a race to see who can grow up the fastest. Even adults have teddies and dolls, there was a man who collected Cabbage Patch dolls. I collect plush Disney Characters, I have given them to the kids (10 and 5) who equally enjoy them Smile. I would like to get a couple of Steiff bears.

Yay! Glad you're getting it, she'll be delighted. They're still so young at that age, they just hide it well sometimes Smile

I want a doll for my birthday now (I'll be 58 Grin)

Seriously my DD played with teddies, barbies, sylvanians, playmobile, etc at that age - I was glad she got fun out of being a little girl - it goes too quickly.

We moved house when I was 10 or 11yo, and my Sindy house was in my new bedroom and I still played with it!

She's only in Y4 I'm guessing, so still at an age where they play with dolls. Like you said it might get her off electronic stuff.
