To leave a bad review for an Airbnb that only has good reviews ?

We have stayed at many Airbnb's, they have all been great & we have come to realise what is/isn't included and always take the extras we know we will need.

We booked a flat for a recent long weekend & it has left a bitter taste.

Firstly - the place was covered in dust - you could write your name in dust on every single surface.
Secondly - Dp is a huge rugby fan and was looking forward to watching it before going out for dinner. Got ourselves set up with beer and nibbles - the TV didn't work ! Contacted the host - "oh yeah - you can only watch it through the playstation so you can only watch iPlayer"
Thirdly - Lazy Saturday morning in bed - someone lets themselves into the flat !!!!
Contacted the host immediately who did apologise and offered a 20% refund for what happened. It transpired he had arranged for someone to paint the front door (gloss) so would we be ok if they painted the door & left it open until it dried ?? This was an inner front door but there is another flat on the floor who we knew nothing about !! he said he had to have it painted that day. We couldn't close the door until 10pm so had to basically leave all our stuff open to other occupants.
There was no washing up liquid or dw capsules
We had to buy our own pillows because his were so bad.
We had to use our own mobile wi-fi to watch the Iplayer because his kept cutting out.
We aren't precious but the dust was really, really bad & you do pay a cleaning fee !

Would it be better then to give a "coded" review, in that case shove? It easy to get carried away with a bad review in the moment! But sometimes a few gentle facts are just, if not more, useful and effective.

Isn't the six nations all on BBC? If so you can watch BBC channels live through iPlayer.

The Saturday match was on ITV

You should leave an honest review, which unfortunately due to the host not giving a shit, happens to be a negative one.

I tried to leave a review on Air B and B that had both positive and negative aspects and not only did the owner have a go at me via email, the review was posted with all the negatives, which were considerable, removed. If you look at the property it shows as 5* with no negatives at all - seems a bit dodgy to me!!

Yes I'd leave an honest review - there's nothing worse than getting somewhere and it's not up to the standard you expect ie a working tv. We splashed out on the year of DHs 50th and booked a "luxury" farmhouse in Devon for the whole family - it cost over £1500 for a week in June so was a real luxury for us and it was basically a shit hole. It had great reviews, so we weren't expecting it at all and when we wrote a bad review and got 30% back from the owners, funnily enough it disappeared. I was beyond fuming. I spent 2 days cleaning it was that bad and we all got stomach upsets from the water supply. Horrific. Funnily enough the holiday company dropped it at the end of the year so I think we weren't the only ones who complained....... but it's now with another national company.

It's difficult and it's a bit of a game. You need to do a good review to avoid getting a negative one back.

user1487450864 · 14/03/2017 16:23

The owner has already submitted a review for us but I can't view it until I post mine.

This is why I'm very wary of ever using Airbnb, that and the fact they can cancel your booking with very little notice.

Why on earth wouldn't you write a factual review? I know the reason on airbnb is that you don't want other people to refuse you if you get a bad review or get grief from the owner.

Booking.com has a number of apartments on their site as well with mostly no cancellation fees or prepayment, so I prefer to book through them or owners direct or flip key where the reviews aren't censored.

Gallavich · 14/03/2017 16:29

I've never heard of Airbnb writing reviews! They are very strict with hosts because they really don't want bad press, and obviously they don't inspect properties so rely on hosts having high standards. The last thing they want is people being disappointed when they arrive.

Gallavich · 14/03/2017 16:30

Airbnb has hidden reviewing so you can't leave a revenge review

We have a holiday let and I would be absolutely mortified to know I'd trashed someone's weekend like that. Absolutely horrible. I would expect to get roasted. He should have offered you much more than 20% off if he cared about his business.
