School "healthy eating"

Just want ti make it clear before i post that I am very happy with the education my DS receives, he has come on in leaps and bounds so no issues with the school "academically" - however I cant hell but feel a bit confused over this one.

Current topic is "healthy eating". Children have been keeping food diaries of the fruit and veg eaten etc. Having guests come in to do exercise class this week ( as well as pe) etc - all well and good ( considering my mom calls me the "food police" 😂 )

But... he has come home with a letter saying that as part of their "healthy eating" a £3 contribution for a class trip to..... Frankie and Bennys for pizza making?!?

ShockHmmConfused How on EARTH is that healthy? I assumed a class trip to a farm to fruit pick.. or a letter to ask each child to bring in a different fruit to make a fruit salad etc.. but no. Pizza. Now we do have treats once a month at home, we have made a pizza together before and have a baking session monthly where we have quality time together in the kitchen. But either i am being an idiot, or unreasonable to understand why the pizza making is a healthy school trip!!! Anyone able to make me have the aha moment and understand?

And LOL at all the people saying there's no such thing as 'healthy' and 'unhealthy' food. Grin

The topic is 'healthy eating' - so the concept has come from the school, not the OP.

Frankie and Benny's offer pizza making for free to school groups.

I've taken my brownies who asked to make pizza and there was an argument between the manager and the sever as to whether we were classed as a school group or not.

The pizza bases came with the tomatoes on. Then they had chicken, ham, lots of different veggies and a sprinkling of cheese. They also got free squash or water. Then got to eat the pizzas, or take home.

OP I'm sorry but I think classing pizza as an unhealthy food only to be eaten once a month as a treat is disordered eating.

Pizza's not unhealthy, it's a great way to create a balanced diet. Carbohydrates, fat, proteins, starches: pizza has it all.

I agree with others that you should take this class yourself. If pizza strikes you as bad your diet could be really limited.

Yes, healthy eating. A healthy balanced diet, not "this food is healthy"..."this food is unhealthy".

Duuuuhhhhhh!

Homemade pizza with lots of fresh ingredients can very healthy and as pp's said the children will have fun and may try new toppings. It's the takeaway/shop bought versions that you might want to limit, also the ones with lots of processed meats. I'm a dietitian so I get asked these sorts of questions a lot!

I think teaching kids to cook as the Government has realised this is a lost skill . Getting kids engaged with food is always good don't worry

rogueantimatter · 15/03/2017 10:22

Putting toppings on a pizza base isn't cooking though.

Yes, YABU.

Pizza is fine as part of a healthy balanced diet. They are not being taken to Chicago Town pizza factory, they are making pizzas from scratch. It's great for the kids - cooking is a dying skill, especially in an age where it's easier to bung a pizza in the oven than make it from scratch.

The fact they offer it free to school groups is great - at a time when schools are being hit by budget cuts the schools have to do what they can.
