Is the word 'draws' now an acceptable way to describe 'drawers'

I have read this on a number of threads now, people writing 'I put it in the draw' or I am looking for new 'draws' or the worst yet was a 'Chester draw'

How has this happened?

Is it not corrected in school? Or is it an evolved use of language? I can't get used to it. But I am old..

No, just no.

IrregularCommentary · 13/03/2017 16:44

So annoying - see also "three story house". Unless it's going to read me some books, it's probably storey!

WritingHome · 13/03/2017 16:47

It's interesting really, it probably will become accepted in time due to majority rule.

I apologise if there was another thread about it previously, I didn't see it.

I have seen plenty about the use of 'should of' V 'should have' but had not noticed the draws thing till recently.

I say drawer and draw as 'drOR'

maggiethemagpie · 13/03/2017 18:48

Reminds me of that old joke

Postman to old lady: Winter draws on, eh?
Old Lady: As a matter of fact I have, not that it is any business of yours...

(Boom Boom)

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/03/2017 20:12

No, draws is not an acceptable way of writing drawers. It is may be ignorant, it may be lazy and it is definitely wrong, but it is not acceptable.

littleshirleybeans · 13/03/2017 20:26

My current pet hate is
"All donations will be gratefully appreciated".
Eh, no they won't. They will be
"Greatly appreciated".
We will be "grateful" for them.
Someone at my work keeps writing this and it's doing my head in that nobody else has even noticed!!!!! It's now creeping in everywhere!!!! Angry

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/03/2017 21:10

I HATE it!!!!

I also hate 'brought' instead of 'bought'. Makes me want to boke.

RainbowPastel · 13/03/2017 21:39

Both said the same here but I often see it written down wrongly.

PennyPickle · 13/03/2017 21:44

Its not acceptable. I have found a huge discrepancy between the spellings of my 17 year old and 14 year old. English language lessons aint what they were ;)

faithinthesound · 13/03/2017 21:48

No it bloody well is not.

(I have some very definite ideas on the degradation of written language in general lol!!)

grumpygiraffe · 13/03/2017 21:50

No. Anybody who says or writes draws instead of drawers deserves to have the said drawers repeatedly slammed on their nipples or penis. That'll learn em.

SomewhatIdiosyncratic · 13/03/2017 22:01

The context of some spellings are more likely to be challenged in school. Lots of opportunities to correct there/ they're/ their type errors in general writing, but not so much for draws/ drawers.

In which accents would the ER be emphasised on drawers? I'd say it with a silent ending, and I don't think the locals around me would emphasise it either (different parts of the country)

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 13/03/2017 22:34

No one around here would say drawER.

TheRealPooTroll · 13/03/2017 22:43

It is just people spelling it incorrectly.
What annoys me more than spelling mistakes though is the current fashion for pedantry. I'm sure some people are genuinely inordinately bothered by spelling errors but the world and his wife are suddenly sharing on social media how they, apparently, can't stand spelling/grammatical errors (when they are usually the very people who make them). It just seems like bigging yourself up at the expense of others to me.
And lovely that someone has shared a photo of someone's beloved dead pet to comment on the use of 'of' instead of 'have' Hmm

DesignedForLife · 13/03/2017 22:45

I actually thought it was a draw, I'll go back and hide in my dyslexic cupboard now.

(Actually dyslexic)

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 13/03/2017 22:48

Yes posting that photo to take the piss is a shitty thing to do.

I wouldn't be proud to call myself a pedant either. It's not really anything to be proud of if you look up the definition.

spiderfish · 13/03/2017 22:49

Wrong. Just wrong.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/03/2017 22:54

ShakeofFara Off topic, but I love your username! I hope it was inspired by the time I posted the Che Guevara 'Shake of Fara' costume for sale on the Christmas Tat thread!

ShakeofFara · 13/03/2017 22:55

Trout it sure was Grin.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/03/2017 22:56

Shake Here's me, feeling like a celebrity now Grin

ShakeofFara · 13/03/2017 22:58

I pronounce the 'er' of drawer but obviously not when saying draw. I'm Scottish if that makes a difference.

ShakeofFara · 13/03/2017 22:59

I'm chuffed that now I know who it was who enlightened me regarding the Shake Grin.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/03/2017 23:01

I'm Irish. We tend to pronounce R's in words where they occur.
But not in 'bought'. I don't agree with R's running around in words where they don't belong.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 13/03/2017 23:02

Haha it was a beautiful moment Shake
