To wonder why petlovers overfeed?

Aibu to wonder why it is considered funny to shorten your pets life by overfeeding it? Why is making an animal fat funny but starving it is abuse? This is not a taat but is a bit inspired by other threads on here, and a bit inspired by the endless pictures of fat miserable pets I see uploaded to the internet. Surely responsible pet ownership is about giving your pet a long healthy and happy life? Can anyone help me to understand why people who would be up in arms at the idea of a dog being rehomed are cool with the idea of it being unable to have a happy and fulfilling life and dying early? I'm not a pet lover just something I was wondering on a boring Sunday.

You say you are not evangelical and then proceed to be totally evangelical.

For the record, my families business is butchery. All our dogs (until the current ones) have been fed the freshest raw possible - still warm in some cases.
Without a freezer it may be possible for one dog however it is prohibitively expensive if you are buying for 100kg plus of dog and cannot buy in bulk due to lack of storage space.
There is no discernible difference between raw and a good kibble.

I see no reason to make people feel shit because raw genuinely is not an option for them or is not one they wish to take.

anxious2017 · 15/03/2017 14:51

You're seriously staying there's no difference between raw and "good" kibble? That's me out 😂

Secondly, dog food that you can buy is full of crap. "Complete" dog food is processed and full of grains and cereals that dogs are not meant to eat. Foods in cans or packets are full of water and salt and other bad things. Dogs should eat a raw diet consisting of raw bones and meat, with the correct bone to meat ratio. A chicken wing has a perfect bone to meat ratio. They would only eat vegetables if they were in the stomach of their prey so should always be grated/processed to break up the cellulose. The odd fish is great. No cooked bones, ever. Dogs aren't mean to eat the rubbish we give them. I don't understand when people will learn this.

I don't have a dog but I do have a cat. There is no way I have the time or inclination to prepare his raw food, making sure he has all the necessary nutrients. I tried pre-prepared raw and he refused to eat it. He has the best pouches I can afford (Natures Menu) and seems to be thriving on them. However I would never judge anyone who chose to feed their animal on something you consider inferior.

"No discernible difference" - and I stand by that given I have wide experience of both.

FairfaxAikman · 15/03/2017 15:03

Oh and I did say "good kibble" as well.

anxious2017 · 15/03/2017 15:12

Your experience is scientific I presume? Show me some stats, then?

TotalPineapple · 15/03/2017 15:21

I have a thin cat and a fat cat. The thin cat eats more than the fat cat. Pretty sure the fat cat is also eating somewhere else. The dog is a perfect weight.
None of them ever get treats unless we're training. Friend has dogs that are on diets but they still get treats and leftovers every day, wonder why they are still fat? (she also tries to feed my 10kg dog entire sausages as treats, thats probably more than a days calories!)

FairfaxAikman · 15/03/2017 15:27

My, my you are a goady fucker anxious.

Read above, my family business is butchery.

I am also involved in the world of showing and highly involved in dog sports. If you can point out a dog and tell me specifically whether it is fed raw or good kibble I'd call you a liar.

anxious2017 · 15/03/2017 15:33

Goady fucker? How horrible.

I'm heavily involved in working and showing dogs too. I really hope you're not in my breed. You seem quite nasty.

Ah, so no scientific facts then. I own a large number of books on the subject, hence my surprise at your comment. Being in butchery doesn't qualify you in science unfortunately.

Has this thread kicked off yet?

FairfaxAikman · 15/03/2017 15:53

Seriously- you accuse people of malnourishing their dogs but I'm the nasty one.
