Prime Minister intervenes against proper investigation of sexual crimes

The Metropolitan Police are trying to argue that they should not be legally obliged to follow their own guidance and investigate serious crimes including sexual assault and rape properly. This arises in relation to the case of John Worboys, the taxi driver rapist, who is thought to have been enabled to continue attacking women over several years by reason of the continued failure of the police to investigate reports about him. The courts have consistently found that the police are liable for their failure, but they are now appealing to the Supreme Court, strongly supported by Theresa May in her then capacity as Home Secretary. The police case seems to be that it's enough to have policies and guidance in place, they don't actually have to follow them.

One of the lesser known provisions of the detested ECHR is to ensure that a countries judicial system is capable of providing citizens with redress against the state (as in this case).

You can kiss goodbye to that if this government succeeds in dumping it. After all, who on earth could possibly have any problems with the state ? Only pinko troublemakers. The UK state is perfect. So there's no need to allow the courts to rule against it, obviously.

The whole impetus behind the wish to repeal the Human Rights Act is the perception which the right wing press merrily foster that it is only ever used to help undeserving immigrants and criminals, and that's something that May likes to encourage. And she does that precisely because it's so inconvenient when it's used to hold the government and bodies like the police to account. Who cares if a few women get attacked or murdered so long as the right boxes are ticked?
