To lock a flatmate out

I have to go out now and have realised that flatmate has left and doesn't have a key to come back in.

If you own the flat and can't just simply hand the guy an extra set of keys, you must actually enjoy feeling needed... Confused
All the Grin posts about something so easily sorted if you actually wanted to

I was with you to start with, assuming he had been an idiot and forgotten his key. But in fact you are not the housemate, you are the landlady, you have 2 keys for yourself, have given 2 people 1 key between them and you are wondering why it's causing problems. Either give him your other key, or cut him another one. YABU to expect a couple to share a key.

Lweji · 22/03/2017 08:54

They could be making it on purpose so that you give them a second set. Grin

Pestilentialone · 22/03/2017 09:13

YABVU
Two people need two keys.
Your lodgers need to find a more reasonable landlord.

dowhatnow · 22/03/2017 09:16

They need two sets. Why haven't you organised another set if you can throw them out?

Or a keysafe on the wall.

Lweji · 22/03/2017 10:52

And now the OP has mysteriously disappeared. Busy making a new set of keys, I expect.

Pestilentialone · 22/03/2017 11:10

Twas the most marvelous drip feed, waiting for the next installment.

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 22/03/2017 11:24

why can't they just have another set of keys? This is such a non problem.

and are they flat mates or lodgers ....the threat to evict implies more lodger than flatmate to me

and he sounds like an idiot manchild.

ifyoulikepinacolada · 22/03/2017 11:57

What?! If i rented a flat and the landlady refused to let me have my own set of keys, I wouldn't pay my rent. This is mad! Why would you only give them one set?

dowhatnow · 22/03/2017 12:03

Just reread the ops posts. I think she's been busted.

So many questions and so many assumptions.

I use the term flatmate to keep it simple. Technically the couple are sub-letting month to month and this is the reason they can be asked to move out with only short notice. They do not have a lease. By law they are not lodgers.

When I leased the house I was handed one set of keys. I cut and paid for a spare set for me and another for a 'flatmate'. I am not legally bound to supply a 2nd key, they are free to cut as many keys as they want for their own use.

When advertising the room it was listed for a single female sharer. The female was couch surfing (living out of a suitcase) with various friends and desperate for somewhere to live. She was not being accepted anywhere as she had lost her job. I agreed to her (and then her partner) to stay for 3-4 months until they got on their feet. (TBH preferred to have 1 flatmate only) Did not charge them any extra for the male partner, just for him to pay his share of utilities. Looked at the situation as doing something kind to help young people get their life back on track. It is six months and they are still here, guess they are happy.

Back to yesterday. He left around 10.30am and returned just before 4pm. Wouldn't you think he would find out what my plans for the day were before risking going out for hours without a key? I left soon after he arrived home to babysit my grandchildren for the night.

I asked why they did not have a key cut for his use. His reply was that he didn't know if it was the special type of key that requires permission to be copied. When I asked what what the key cutting place said, it turns out he didn't bother to ask anyone. Our keys are regular keys - there is nothing to suggest that they are "Do Not Copy". Who called him a man-child?

TheBeast. Thank you for the link - looks brilliant but I am renting.

Sorry for that long post. Hope I answered everyone's queries.

Agree they could have cut their own keys / addressed the bloody question! I rent, I have cut more keys to have a spare and give one to the cleaner. It's not rocket science.

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/03/2017 00:03

So you agreed for them to stay 3-4 months and now they've been there for 6. And you agreed to a couple when you advertised for a single sharer. And he's a security risk.

I think I'd be gently suggesting that it might be time for them to look for their own place now.
