for your "over the counter" can't-get-it-in-the UK travel purchase tips?

I've only recently learnt that you can buy melatonin over the counter in the USA but in the UK it's only available on prescription.

I was thinking that for someone coming to the UK the morning after pill (NOT as emergency contraception before I get flamed) might be a useful purchase for countries where you can't get it.

And then I was wondering what other things can you buy over the counter
in other countries that you can't get in the UK?

Canada? Australia? Europe?

Any tips for anything worthwhile? I'm thinking more retin A/ melatonin type stuff than paracetamol.

And why can't we get melatonin here?

tiddlyipom · 08/03/2017 23:35

In Australia you can buy hydrocortisone cream and melatonin. I buy paracetamol in packs of 100.
I bought antibiotics in Hong Kong.

Hairyhat · 08/03/2017 23:37

A friend of mine told me you could get amphetamine prescribed in the USA. I know I'm slightly missing the point of this thread but is it true? He's morbidly obese and has asked his uk doctor to prescribe it for him.

BertieBotts · 08/03/2017 23:39

mother within the EU it's perfectly legal to bring medicines across borders as long as you bought it legally where you were. There are laws about importing medicine from outside the EU to within it but I think if it's on your person it's unlikely to be a problem. Unsure though.

This is a great thread!
Does anyone know what you might be able to get in Italy that you can't get in the UK?
I remember trying to get some anti-histamine cream (for insect bites) in Spain but they wouldn't or couldn't sell it to me. Good tip about the naproxen and tramadol, though.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 08/03/2017 23:49

You can't get canesten or any thrush medication without prescription in a number of European countries. Very troublesome if you get thrush on holiday!!!

witwootoodleoo · 08/03/2017 23:50

Tylenol PM and Advil PM are a painkiller you can buy in any drugstore in the US and they have an added sleep aid. I swear by them for jet lag. They're so good at knocking me out and making me sleep a solid 8 hours no matter how jetlagged I am that I only take half the recommended dose. Also invaluable if you have pain keeping you awake.l at night.

Tartyflette · 08/03/2017 23:51

Oops, just seen the post about Xanax available OTC in Italy.
Is it a sleeping pill, or anti-anxiety medication?? Or an anti-depressive?

The triple antibiotic cream for cuts etc that you can get in the US is v.handy.

Also in the US they have a disinfectant/lidocaine spray called Bactine which is really useful for cuts, grazes, insect bites etc. (It numbs the pain) and doesn't sting when applied.
I always stock up on that.

WineAndTiramisu · 08/03/2017 23:52

You can also buy boxes of 100 paracetamol in the US

Had no issues getting norethisterone in Italy once either

Tartyflette · 09/03/2017 00:00

MSLehrerin can I ask what the muscle relaxant you bought OTC in Spain was? (I take something called Ropinirole)

SisyphusHadItEasy · 09/03/2017 00:03

In Canada you can get Tylenol #1 by asking for it at the pharmacy counter. That is acetaminophen with 8 mg of codeine (co-codamol, I think)

SisyphusHadItEasy · 09/03/2017 00:04

wine - at Costco in Canada, you can get 500 Tylenol (paracetamol) at once, 2 bottles of 250 packaged together.

TheClaws · 09/03/2017 00:13

I have to correct the post the said you could get 32g tabs of codeine over the counter in Australia. You can't do that. The maximum you can get (as far as I'm aware - and I've really looked as I have chronic pain) is 15mg individual tabs of codeine, combined with either paracetamol or ibuprofen. If you took two of these that would be 30mg a dose, over the counter, I guess. However from 2018 codeine will only be available by prescription in Australia anyway.

MangosAndPapayas · 09/03/2017 00:30

TheClaws

In the Uk we have Nurofen plus. I've just looked it up and it says
Nurofen Plus contains 200mg of ibuprofen and 12.8mg of codeine phosphate

What brands in Australia have 15mg of codeine in?

OP posts:
tiddlyipom · 09/03/2017 01:13

I'm not sure in brands, however from February 2018 codeine will be available on precription only in Oz.

TheClaws · 09/03/2017 01:13

Mangos All sorts, both proprietary and generic. They are usually sold under a name like 'Extra-Strength Pain Relief'. They are also available with calmative (doxycycline usually), and I think sometimes an anti-emetic.

TheClaws · 09/03/2017 01:20

To be more specific on some brands, that would be Panadeine for paracetamol + codeine 15 mg, Nurofen Extra for ibprofen + codeine 15mg, plus many other brands, chemist brands, and generics.

FreeNiki · 09/03/2017 01:24

Who sells domperidone without a prescription?

Ericaequites · 09/03/2017 01:27

Using animal antibiotics for people is quite safe. It's better to go to a farm supply store. You can buy bigger bottles.

FreeNiki · 09/03/2017 01:52

Using animal antibiotics for people is quite safe.

I bought medication in egypt when I had a dodgy tummy.

On the box it said it contained streptomycin. Oral streptomycin is only really used in veterinary medicine. Im still alive and it made me feel better.

nursebickypegs · 09/03/2017 01:56

America had this great tynenol which was for arthritis. I got it from Walgreens and it really helps me.

Also they sell steroid cream for $1!!! Stuff that I have to write out a script for...I can walk to the dollar tree and buy it for $1!!!

1981trouble · 09/03/2017 02:13

Canada/us - fexodendine (the decent antihistamine!!) for adults and kids.

Uk - infant gaviscon

Isadora2007 · 09/03/2017 02:20

Am wondering what people would use the MAP for if not emergency contraception?

steff13 · 09/03/2017 02:21

at Costco in Canada, you can get 500 Tylenol (paracetamol) at once, 2 bottles of 250 packaged together.

At Costco here in the US, they sell their own brand in packages of 1000. 500 mg tablets. It'll last you forever. :)
