To not give up smoking just yet?

Okay so before I write my list of excuses I know smoking is horrible, expensive, smelly, and above all a danger to my health. My partner has recently decided to quit, and wants me to quit too. I know that people quitting can be grumpy but it's causing arguments, him saying that I'm not being supportive. I've not been smoking around him and cut down loads so that I don't tempt him or so he can smell it on me. But I'm not ready to give up yet. It's my only vice in life, and I'm at a very stressful period in my life and I don't feel it's the right time and being forced and guilted into it is setting me up to fail. Again I know I'm full of excuses but it's a powerful addiction and it's intimidating. Anyone who has quit successfully, any tips? What made you decide you were ready (aside from the obvious!)

I quit 4 months ago, I had various failed attempts in the past but I just had a different mindset this time. I decided I couldn't afford it & wasn't helping my situation so quit using patches. I tried an e-cig for a week but it didn't really have the same effect for me. I believe it's all about you thought processes so if you feel your not ready you won't see it through. You can't quit for anyone but yourself but you can do it - promise!!

I stopped because I was getting no pleasure from smoking it is just disgusting I was standing next to a smoker the other day and they stank then remembered i stank too.

Like you, I gave up twice due to pregnancies and breastfeeding then went back to it, stupidly.

Like others, have taken up vaping and have NO desire to ever pick up a fag again. I did light one last week just to compare tastes and chucked it after one drag! Horrible, so much nicer to vape my berry, menthol or other fruit flavours. Lemon Sherbet is really nice or Blueberry Ice! Cost about £50 for the kit and some juices. Now I reorder from onepoundliquid.com at £1 a bottle so b v cheap. Try it, it's really easy - tastes and smells so much nicer Grin

Allen Carr. No cravings, no moodiness, no temptation to smoke ever again. 6 years last month.

I've just ordered the book! Seems to come highly recommended and I'm willing to try:)

If you both quit together you can support each other, so will be easier for both of you.

Once you have quit you will look back and wonder why the hell you ever smoked. I do and I can't beleiev I spent all that time and wasted all that money on cigarettes. Just go for it. Dont cut down. Just stop.

KindDogsTail · 08/03/2017 17:51

I could not have done it finally just stopping, though people do.
I definitely needed nicotine replacement first to get my very serious physical addiction (to a massive amount of daily nicotine) gradually down.

StrawberryShortcake32 · 08/03/2017 17:55

I tried quitting purely for somebody else. I failed miserably. Mainly because I enjoy smoking. I ended up resenting him for it and it really ruined our relationship to be honest.
I ended up quitting when I found out I was pregnant with DS. You need to want to quit yourself. It won't work if you don't. I wish you the best of luck with it. I really hope it does work out for you xx Flowers

That's great OP. Good luck when you decide to go for it.

I quit when my teeth started falling out Blush I did quit before I was 'ready' though, I decided to give vaping a go and allow myself a few months to play around with it before setting a date. As it happened I just switched completely effortlessly the day the kit arrived.

And once I had those little squiggles and wasn't breastfeeding anymore the incentive to stay quit was gone so I started up again.

There is so much focus on stopping while pregnant and when they are tiny babies, but probably the biggest risk of having a parent who smokes is that your DC are much more likely to start smoking themselves when they reach their teens. You still have a HUGE incentive to stop and stay stopped so you are not modelling that behaviour as they grow up.

Good luck!

My teeth are shameful i dont smile and it is the fags that did it.

TheSnowFairy · 08/03/2017 20:19

I quit a month ago as I refuse to buy packets of 20. So as soon as I couldn't buy 10, that did it for me.

I have been smoking for about 30 years but only a couple a day and I also tried lots of times before I stopped.

If I lived with a smoker I would definitely still be smoking - it is hard.

Well done to your DP and good luck!
