I'll start by saying that I am a Christian and as part of my religious beliefs I try to keep the Sabbath day holy. I got to church and don't got to parties, cinema, shopping, sports events etc on Sundays.
Anyway. My niece is also Christian and she follows similar beliefs. There is an event coming up in her school soon and she went to the principal to ask that it not be scheduled to take place on a Sunday as otherwise she didn't feel that she could go due to her religious beliefs. It's the kind of event that can be on any day of the week.
The event schedule has been announced and it's on a Sunday. She's devastated and her parents are furious and talking about how she's being discriminated against etc.
I admire her for making this decision herself and sticking up for what she believes but I really don't think she is being discriminated against. I think her parents (and all the people who commented on her facebook page) ABVU. There are 200 kids in her year at school, you can't suit everyone.
What do you think?

Your family ABU.

She is being unreasonable.

There must have been lots of factors involved in making that decision, such as when enough staff (who are probably not being paid any extra for coming in on their day off) are available, maybe when equipment is available for hire, when outside contractors are available.

They can't always schedule events according to the request of one student.

Thanks for all the responses. I do feel sorry for my niece. She's a really sweet girl and I'm proud of how she does her best to do what she believes is right. I'm more disappointed with her parents for not preparing her better for the disappointment. I guess this is a good life lesson for her. Her school is a Catholic school so perhaps should be more respectful of religious beliefs, perhaps??
Personally I don't think there would be anything wrong with her attending the event. It's on in the evening, (it's the end of term party) so she wouldn't have to miss church.
BTW I can totally imagine the Daily Mail sad face story.

They are there to uphold Catholic beliefs, and there is no reason Catholics can't have events on a Sunday.
She needs to learn that her own ideas don't trump anyone elses, and particularly her minority religious beliefs have no sway in an institution that is following their own religious rules.

I wouldn't be too proud of her if I were you, I'd tell her to grow up and join the real world, and drag her parents alon with her.

Happyandhungry · 08/03/2017 09:16

Unfortunately if she was Muslim in this day and age she would have been listened to (i await the flaming from the PC brigade)
I think she was right to voice her concerns but as you say they can't please 200 kids equally. She'll just have to stick to her beliefs and not go and just accept it but i wouldnt say its discrimination.

TheOnlyLivingToyInNewYork · 08/03/2017 09:18

No she wouldn't, don't be ridiculous. Hmm

pipsqueak25 · 08/03/2017 09:18

good grief to all of this ! the parents possibly have -brainwashed- encouraged her into thinking the request was actually acceptable to make, i would be down on them in this instance, not so much niece tbh.

pipsqueak25 · 08/03/2017 09:21

happy , may be but then again it still would be wrong. it's called life, it isn't always fair, we just have to get on with it, there are too many snowflakes around nowadays.

CaoNiMartacus · 08/03/2017 09:43

Give over with the "PC brigade", Happy. It's truly the last bastion of the hard of thinking.

Willow2017 · 08/03/2017 09:52

Oh give over! If there was one Muslim in the school do you seriously think they would have arranged the whole school around them for one evening?

It didn't even stop her going to flipping church anyway!
Idiot parents looking for an excuse to complain and using religion to do it with.

miserableandinpain · 08/03/2017 10:39

Did anyone read my comment. We are muslim and go out of our way to take oart in the activities in our kids school wich is church if england. We woukdnt dream of doing what OPs niece did. Dont paint us all with the same brush please. Not being PC being realistic.

miserableandinpain · 08/03/2017 10:40
