Nannies are not babysitters!

A lady messaged me yesterday looking for a weekend nanny (8-6) Saturday's and Sunday's EOW plus extra days every school holiday.

Brilliant, I thought, would suit me well. Explained that I would accept £9p/h, the lady offered £8p/h. I accepted, happy to help a struggling mum and earn some extra income. Arranged to meet and discuss contract today etc.

I've just had a message now, cancelling unless I would take £5p/h as she can't afford £8p/h?!
That's not even minimum wage! Needless to say I declined!

I'm level 3 qualified with 8 years childcare experience working in nurseries, schools, being a registered childminder and a nanny. WIBU to expect £8p/h or should I have settled and asked for min wage? Angry

I'm in the North West if that helps!

I wish you lived in Hampshire! I'd snatch you up for £8 an hour!

£5 is too low for your qualifications and experience. I wouldn't pay a babysitter a fiver an hour!

Bobbi73 · 08/03/2017 19:48

I'd pay a teenage babysitter more than that!

MsJudgemental · 08/03/2017 19:52

Why on Earth are you accepting such a low rate? Cleaners earn more than that. Have more confidence in your own worth and more self-respect.

HighwayDragon1 · 08/03/2017 19:59

My bet is she was looking at the price of childminders, they charge £4ph...

jocarter67 · 08/03/2017 20:17

I genuinely feel if you had accepted the £5 p/h she would have still taken you for granted. My daughter is paid more than that for a paper round.

emmakc1977 · 08/03/2017 20:44

We pay £10 an hour for ours, she a qualified nanny and we are in Surrey - I think she's taking the mic

Kerala2712 · 08/03/2017 20:52

We are in the North East also- £9-12 an hour is the going rate here, and YANBU- its not London prices, but you are worth more than £5 an hour.

Jeanneweany · 08/03/2017 21:04

No she is cheeky cow. You are 1 million percent correct.

Captainj1 · 08/03/2017 21:09

I'm in NW and have a full time nanny with similar qualifications who is paid £11.25 per hour gross. When I looked at the last nannytax wages survey I was paying slightly ahead of the market, especially when considering she brings her DD with her 50% of the time.

NoRoomForALittleOne · 08/03/2017 22:17

I'm in the NW and couldn't get any decent applicants for a nanny position at £10 an hour (apparently the going rate around here). At £15 per hour plus accommodation, I could secure a career nanny with qualifications and experience that I was happy with. There is no way that I would even consider paying below the minimum age. There is a local teenager who will babysit for us during the day on a Sunday for £6.50 per hour but I choose to pay her £10 per hour. Anything less would be taking advantage!

GoLightlyHollie · 09/03/2017 09:24

I pay my teenage (16) year old babysitter £7 an hour and we round up. I even think that is low.
She is chancing her arm.

thenovice · 09/03/2017 09:41

I have never had a babysitter for mine, but I am told the going rate where I live (SW) is at least £10 per hour. Don't accept.

AwaywiththePixies27 · 09/03/2017 09:58

No you're definitely not BU. I pay my niece, who is my actual babysitter, more than that!

I also think £8 an hour is quite cheap too. Know what you're worth OP and up your rates a little. Smile

Thanks for the support everyone 😘 Time to put my big girl pants on and stand my ground!

I feel bad now! Everyone saying they'd pay a baby sitter more than £5ph. Last time we went out from 7pm to just before 11pm the agreed price for our 15 year old baby sitter was £5ph and we gave her £25. The kids were in bed.
