But K even if you don't manage to get in contact, you are attempting to get in contact. Why is that no longer good enough?

When did people stop saying 'Okay, I so will phone Social Services/the DVLA/Ryanair/the Environmental Health people/my auntie who I had a misunderstanding with attempt to solve my problem/book an appointment/get some advice.

Why do we have to 'reach out' to them? It's dreadful euphemism that makes It sounds like everyone is in the midst of some huge drama where they are calling for help from a pit of sinking sand. It's just embarrassing to use such faddish psychobabble and corporate speak for everyday mundane situations.

'Passion' is the one irritating me at the moment. Just read the definition en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/passion

My company is moving to a new objectives/performance setting system at the moment, I'm having a hard time working out what its about because of the overuse of the word. I'm a middle-aged Englishwoman FFS, I've been doing the job with dedication and intelligence for over 30 years. The tedious but essential parts as well as the exciting ones. Whether I've been feeling excited or depressed. Even in the sense of 1.4 of the definition, emphasising 'passion' is shallow.

It's also overused in secondary/higher education threads ... the one word my DD's school wisely banned from personal statements was 'passion'.

How about "circle back" instead of plain old "reply"? I always imagine the person wheeling in the air above their office like a goddamn osprey.

FrenchLavender Personally I do tend to say "I rang/emailed/wrote but got no response" but I understand "reach out" as shorthand for same in a more media-based environment. I'm more of a descriptive linguist than a prescriptivist! Smile
