To get rid of my bath

Harveypuss · 05/03/2017 12:44

Posting here for traffic really.

We have decided to revamp the main bathroom in our house. We also have two small shower rooms in the house, which are used regularly.

We are considering ripping out the bath (with shower overhead) and replacing it with a large walk-in shower. It would look great, I'm sure and nobody in our family (us & two teenage kids) ever use the bath. I think the last time the bath was used was when our kids were babies.

However, I've had people tell me having no bath in the house at all would cause problems if we wanted to sell the house in the future (no plans currently, but you never know).

I'm now questioning my decision. What do you think? Do any of you only have showers in your properties? My husband thinks we should just go with it and doesn't see the point in paying out for a revamp and installing a bath that will just not get used, whereas a large walk-in shower would.

Would welcome your views! Many thanks.

What I can't understand though is if you are going to replace a bath with a similar sized shower then why not just have a big power shower over the bath?

One of the reasons I want to be rid of our ugly arse bath is to 'future proof' the house whilst we have the cash. My mum and dad needed to bin the bath and get a decent shower installed but it took them a couple of years to save up for the work with just their pensions (and yes, we did offer to fund it, but they wouldn't take our money). The final few months my mum only had strip washes at the sink because she couldn't step into the bath any more.

Plus shower cubicles are easier to clean, less slippy on the feet and a good sized stall gives more room than a bath.

StarryIllusion · 05/03/2017 15:13

I don't even look at houses without baths. Even if they look fantastic they are off the list.

Originalfoogirl · 05/03/2017 15:14

decline to stay at a friend's house because they have no bath

Erm...what?

I love a bath, but this seems a bit extreme. Unless there is some reason you are unable to shower.

NapQueen · 05/03/2017 15:14

Id do it if you will be living there at least another decade but Id also suggest putting a bath back in before you sell it.

BusterGonad · 05/03/2017 15:16

I'm currently living in a house without a bath (renting at present) and I would never buy a house without a bath or rent again without a bath. I HATE not having a bath, I wouldn't even view a house without a bath. I miss having a bath more than I ever thought I would!

FaithAgain · 05/03/2017 15:17

Meh. I think do what you want with the bathroom! We are buying a house with a shower only (bath removed due to owner's mobility issues). We went in with an offer below the asking price because we stated we need to do the bathroom again to put a bath in. (We have a DD who is 3 and I love my baths!). Didn't put us off. I wouldn't keep a bath just for the sake of reselling down the line.

ShoeEatingMonster · 05/03/2017 15:18

I bought a house without a bath.

I hate it!

We're going to replace it but it's gonna be a complete pain because all the waste pipes will need moving

PeppaPigTastesLikeBacon · 05/03/2017 15:20

If you have showers I see no problem having a room with a bath. I probably wouldn't want to get rid in case of grandkids at some point

KickingKat · 05/03/2017 15:22

I bath everyday at 6pm for an hour. True story.

Would never buy a house without a bath!

Just thinking of all the things I use the bath for: Epsom salt baths, ice baths, camomile baths for rashes/pox, filling up with water in an emergency situation, washing the bin properly, dying clothes, that's just for staters! Can't imagine not having a bath

Summerisdone · 05/03/2017 15:26

I couldn't buy a house without a bath. I have a bath every night so I would miss it massively.
That being said, it is your home OP and you don't seem to have any current future plans to sell, so enjoy your home the way is best for you. If you only make modifications to your home in ways that will suit potential buyers rather than what suits yourself and your family, then you might as well be renting.

Sweetninja30 · 05/03/2017 15:27

I say rip out the bath and put in a really luxurious shower. I would rather have a shower with all the bells and whistles on any day over a bath. Maybe I'm biased as I am currently ripping mine out though...

Redglitter · 05/03/2017 15:30

I'd get rid of it. I hate baths. I'm moving house soon and getting rid of the bath is definitely on my to do list. Hate them. Total waste of space

Ferrisday · 05/03/2017 15:30

I haven't had a bath in 10 years!

But you need them for kids and dogs
I don't mind showers over baths though.

IHaveBrilloHair · 05/03/2017 15:32

I hate baths and would rip one out but I think I'm in the minority.

northernshepherdess · 05/03/2017 19:37

I've wanted to do the same.. I've not had a bath since the birthpool last year. I wash the dogs and fill baby bath with the shower head for controlled temperature.
Baby is even used to the shower.
I love a good wallowing bath but with no one to watch the baby... I just can't get one

PandoraMole · 05/03/2017 19:42

I wouldn't buy a house without a bath. I'd live in the bath if it wasn't likely to cause permanent wrinkling

This

But I know plenty of people who feel differently and if you think you're likely to be in the house long term, how you feel about it is much more important.

CurlyMango · 05/03/2017 19:56

It needs to have a bath or if you are staying to know that he future selling price needs to be reduced by entire bathroom fitting cost. As it also causes work and effort.

Smallangryplanet · 05/03/2017 19:58

I never bathe and shower one or twice a day. I'd love a luxurious shower.

Take a picture of the bathroom now with a bath in it . Get a quote and approximate timescale from the bathroom fitters to put a bath back in. Whilst you couldn't market the house as having a bath in it, it shows the options.

I'm surprised that people wouldn't consider a house without a bath.

IamRonnieBiggs · 05/03/2017 20:06

I rarely have them now - used to have them a lot before I had DD (I don't like the company it attracts now Confused)
However I still have them when I am poorly - hate not to have the option

If you're not selling - if you would in nearish future keep it

Also ours was invaluable when the shower broke!

Bluntness100 · 05/03/2017 20:08

I think it does put a lot of people off. Lots love baths, others have small kids and pretty much need one. Personally we have been in this house three years and none of us have had a bath yet.

I can see why ripping it out it's a tempting option.

Sundance01 · 05/03/2017 20:09

I love baths - they are a great pleasure for me but I would still buy and live in a house without one.

I don't get the baby/toddler thing either. Tiny babies are far easier bathed in kitchen sink and toddlers who have always been used to showers will be fine in them.

BattleaxeGalactica · 05/03/2017 20:17

We bought a house without a bath and replaced it. So long as there's room for one which in your case there obviously will be it wouldn't put me off.

Ferrisday · 05/03/2017 20:24

Just realised that every house I have bought, I have redone the entire bathroom anyway!

Octuscactus · 05/03/2017 21:52

I personally find baths disgusting

Octuscactus · 05/03/2017 21:56

I shower twice a day, every day. My DC do the same. As soon they were able to stand up I gave their baby bath away and we always used the shower.

I find this bath thing so funny! I remember a thread here were most of the mothers washed theirs and theirs children's hair once week or every two weeks and showers twice or three times a week so why really want a bath? I'll never get it.
