Just that- I had cleaners and am now feeling like it's too much bother trying to have a good relationship with them whilst getting the standard of cleaning you want, tidying before they come not to mention the cost- I think I'd prefer to do it myself and save us the cash but as my dh refuses to clean and has no time to a bit ambivalent. What do you do?

I'm a sahm, one DD at school and I have a cleaner for 2hrs a week to mainly do the bathrooms, kitchen and floors. I love her, I still tidy and clean bits most days but it just stops arguing between DH and I.

£20 a week for two hours cleaning would buy you roughly 4 hours childcare for one dc at a childminders.

I think if I didn't work I would probably do the cleaning myself. In fact, we didn't have a cleaner when I was working 3 days a week. The children were pre-school age then and I would kick them and DH out for half a day at the weekend and get on with it. I'd be more confident it was being done properly, with bigger tasks rotated over time etc. But working FT I prefer to keep the extra time free.

Our cleaner isn't really that great - if I had a brilliant one I'd keep her whether I worked or not.

We have a cleaner for 2 hours a week who we had when I was working and continued with now I'm a SAHM. She's amazing and I trust her fully. I still do some cleaning and a lot of tidying most days to keep on top of things. We also use an ironing service as I hate ironing and the only things that need ironing are dh's shirts and neither of us have the time or inclination to do them on an evening. I have cut back on other things in order to keep my cleaner whilst I don't work.

Would love a cleaner but baulk at paying someone £10+ an hour to do something I can do myself. I work pt with two children of secondary age, so it's quite feasible even if it is a drag. I do see, as a pp said, that the money I 'save' by not having one justifies my indulgences, so I guess I kind of pay myself.

I might get someone in soon to do a one-off deep clean though, house could do with that.

I'm a sahm and have been for 10 years - have never had a cleaner. I didn't realise people did when they were sahm until fairly recently when I wondered how people kept their houses so sparkling and 3 of my friends nonchalantly mentioned they have cleaners. I was Shock and jealous!

I'm a SAHM and have a cleaner once a week for 4 hours. I find myself doing a lot of cleaning anyway as there's always something and sort of want the cleaner to find the house clean anyway so she wants to keep it at that standard rather than think we accept some dirtiness! DH does next to no cleaning (well no cleaning) but tbh he works long hours and I wouldn't really expect him to.

sabzii · 02/03/2017 20:42

I do it all myself, most of it while DD's at nursery.

I've had cleaners in past but find them intrusive and not worth it. I have high standards and fussy about how things are cleaned eg not pouring mop water down kitchen sink, different sponges and clothes etc.

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 02/03/2017 20:50

I am predominately a SAHM but I do work part time, from home.
I now have a cleaner come for 3 hours a week. She does a good clean of the bathroom, toilets and upstairs and a quick clean of the downstairs.
I hoover and mop the downstairs a couple of times a week on top of this but its nice to know that the house is being properly cleaned regularly - particularly when I have a work project come in that I have to turn my attention to.

It is a luxury but we economise in other areas and are happy to pay to make our lives easier.

im a SAHM with a 5 year old and 2 pre-schoolers, i have a cleaner come once a week for 3 hours at a time.

i potter during the week with cleaning, i make sure it is tidy and do interim hoovering. I clean the loos regularly. but i dont do much else. Its lovely.

I do my own laundry. I don't mind it.
