Dropping off DC1 at nursery today it was extremely busy - DC1 has been going to this nursery for almost 3 years and it's never been this busy.

The nursery is in a little business park where there are offices for building companies or other non-shop businesses. The yellow unit is a unit that does have customers visiting the site, probably around 2 an hour and they leave their parking spaces free for customers. There is a little private road that is in between the units and the parking spaces that loops round to the main A road.

The diagram shows a colour for the unit and a colour for each of the parking spaces, you can see that they are empty.

I am usually car 1 or 2 at the drop off but today because it was ridiculously busy I was car 5 (the blue car). I actually waited for a few minutes but none of the cars 1-4 were moving, two of them had people sat in the car on their phones (so i thought they might be about to drive off), we were about to be late so instead of waiting for slot 1 or 2 I quickly parked as car 5 and ran in to drop of DC1. This took maybe 2 minutes - just a drop and run.

When i came out a man had come out of the yellow unit and he started to shout at me about how i cant park in front of his unit and how it's a road and you cant park on a road. I said that I was sorry but there were no spaces free and I was only 2 minutes.

He pointed to some of the blue and orange free spaces and said i should have parked there. I asked if it would be better if i parked in one of the yellow spaces and he said no because they are private and I should park in one of the other units spaces. I said that they were private too and that there are no markings that prohibit parking where I parked.

I then quickly put DC2 in the car seat and drove off.

I'm not sure if this will happen again as its not happened in 3 years of parking here but WIBU to park there?

Crossed post with Inthesleepless. It really was a great diagram. You set the bar.

Megatherium · 01/03/2017 12:49

If he owns the space in front of his unit and doesn't want people to park there, he needs to put a sign up, and he probably will. For future purposes, it might be worth talking to the nursery about whether they can talk to their neighbours about what is the best solution, since if this problem persists they are liable to have a lot of pissed-off neighbours.

Mummyoflittledragon · 01/03/2017 12:57

Normally on a public road, I would expect dropped curbs to allow access for a van/lorry to the business units. As it's in a business park, I'm assuming the road was purpose built as it sounds as though there are no dropped curbs designating van/lorry access to the units. Is this the case?

Regardless of whether or not the business is service or product based, close access to the building may be required at times. At such a time, cars parked in front of the building would be in the way. From how you've described it, and your diagram of the other cars, I can't imagine the road was designed to be parked on. It's very difficult to say without a photograph and even a read of the lease or deeds or some such. If it's a purpose built business park, the road may also be private land in which case, there wouldn't be road markings.

That said, common sense dictated you were only parking for a short time and he was being less than accommodating. But he may get the same scenario 20 times a day.

I really would have a chat with the nursery. They may be aware of the situation.

CotswoldStrife · 01/03/2017 13:05

It's not a public road though Man10, the OP said it's a private road on a business park. From the diagram, the nursery has three marked spaces and that's where people should park for drop off.

redpriestandmozart · 01/03/2017 13:15

"Competitive parking diagrams" is going to be a thing now, isn't it!

In my head I see masses of MN'ers driving around looking for a good parking war just to do the diagram! I see members employing artists & graphic designers. I see a gap in the market solely for MN parking diagram makers :)

Kiroro · 01/03/2017 13:19

Best parking diagram. Ever.

WhatchaMaCalllit · 01/03/2017 13:24

1st off - Fantastic diagram. Seriously. It's the best!

Secondly - If it were me, I'd approach the nursery and request clarification on the parking available. They appear to have three parking spaces. I'm not sure how many of the three are used by staff but they should consider getting a 'drop off' space for parents so that no other unit can use it but parents of children attending nursery can. Explain how "Angry Man" spoke to you about stopping outside his unit while you delivered your child to their nursery. Perhaps this isn't the first time he's spoken to parents of the nursery and you're just one in a long line of people to raise this.

Did I mention great diagram??? Smile

Rhayader · 01/03/2017 13:46

There isn't actually a curb to be dropped, its just a road - it's very quiet usually.

The nursery is quite large, with 4 rooms and the bays are taken by the employees. I will speak to nursery but hopefully this wont come up again.

I'm not talking about getting a curb to be dropped (?) but if the nursery could have a 4th allocated parking space and they could have a sign "Snuggles Nursery - Parent Drop-Off parking ONLY" put on it so it's not for long term parking (even 1hr would be considered long term) and parents pull into this space, drop off their kids, and drive off again.

Rhayader · 01/03/2017 14:47

Sorry the curb comment was in response to a PP.

I'm not sure if they could negotiate another space, i guess they would have to sublet off another unit. I think the problem is that the pick ups and drop offs all happen within 15/20 minute windows.

You either drop off your kid at 8-8:15 or 9-9:15. I don't think they could justify reallocating one of the three to drop off/pick up when in reality there tends to be 2/3 cars at the same time and the spaces are used by the staff. Ive never been able to park in one of the nursery allocated spaces.

Fantastic diagram!

That diagram is mega cool Grin

Best diagram ever
(Completely misses point of post)

londonrach · 02/03/2017 08:02

Lovely drawing. Was it a road with no dropped kerbs or yellow lines. If a legal road you can park. If not you cant. Doesnt matter if 2 minutes for 20 minutes.

AlisonBlunderland · 02/03/2017 08:07

What's it like at pick up time? Afternoons are usually worse around schools and nurseries

Rhayader · 02/03/2017 09:22

Pick up time actually usually fine - at the moment i'm picking up at 4 but you can pick up at 12, 4 or 6. This morning i was car number 1 so i'm hoping it was just a strange blip!

None of this actually happened and the OP only posted to show off her stellar diagramming skills.

Not jealous at all. I sometimes have to do very simple PPT diagrams and I just end up chasing boxes with a mind of their own across the screen.

Rhayader · 02/03/2017 09:36

BarbaraofSeville if you cant get things to place correctly by dragging then right click, and select "size and position". Under "Position" you can give exact numbers for where you want the object to be :)

I'm having parking problems at the moment.
I'm just about to pilot a remote drone to produce a video of the area, including sweeping down shots to give close ups of the offending cars.
Then I'll create a dedicated website to the problem with the video, still photographs, GoogleMaps overlay, StreetView and covert Mugshots of the offenders.

Someone will still ask.... what's that grey blob meant to be?

Your diagram is a thing of beauty.

Just on the basis of the quality of your diagram YADNBU Smile

If I ever need to post a parking thread and wish to include a diagram would you be happy to take a commission?

Without actually seeing the road, it's hard to say, but I would think that if the developers put in dedicated parking spaces, then there was never any intention of parking on the road. Just on the basis of that diagram, cars parking around the nursery could make it very difficult for larger commercial vehicles to access?
