To think being huge would make me lose weight quicker?

Am I being U to think that being a BIG person (I started out at 21 stone in December) and I've tried to control my emotional eating, which hasn't always worked particularly well. But I'd managed to lose 6lb when I weighed myself last week. I was chuffed and it gave me the motivation to start being quite strict with myself and actually dieting.

So I read about this diet where you eat 700 calories per day, and it's supposed to reverse diabetes by changing the way your cells, pancreas and liver react to sugar. I'm not diabetic but I am insulin resistant, and I had a lightbulb moment and thought. I can do that!
I got through the week and I feel really proud, but I only lost 3lb.

As a very hefty person who was consuming 2500 calories at least per day. To cut down to 700 surely I should have lost more than 3lb?

I'd expect a normal ish weighted person to lose that kind of weight on that kind of diet.

Listen to me, I'm also 26 and weighed 19st 1lb 3 months ago. I'm now 17st 5lbs and dropping at a rate of 4lbs per week for the last 3ish weeks.

This is really really important for you to understand, because if you carry on you're going to end up ruining your metabolism for the rest of your life.

Weight loss is, despite all the fad stuff, a maths problem. Calories out must be higher than cals in. It's that simple.

Stay with me, I know you've heard that a million times.

HOWEVER: The magical bit is finding a way to achieve a calorie deficit without your body super craving sugar, retaining water, feeling hungry etc etc. The "diet" you're following will cause all of these things. You categorically will not stick to this for 8 weeks solid, you just wont. Stop setting yourself up to fail.

Right now, you're setting yourself up to fail so that when it "doesnt work" you have an excuse to jack it in and throw your hands in the air over it. I do exactly the same thing. There isn't a fad diet I haven't tried! Blush. You need to understand why you do that before you'll make this change.

Also, ketosis is very different to starvation, it doesnt depend at all on caloric intake, it depends on carb intake :) if you eat under 50g of carbs a day you'll hit ketosis, if you hit under 25g a day you'll be securely in nutritional ketosis. I've been in ketosis for the last 3 weeks, dropped 13lbs in that time and eat between 1,000 and 1,200 cals a day, 70% of which comes from fat.

Best of luck OP

Givemethechocolate,

A couple of years ago I did the 800/8 week diet (blood sugar diet/Newcastle protocol, many names, same diet), and knew my day was successful when I got the MFP "you are not eating enough" warning when I hit the "complete entry" button Wink.
If you want to get a rough idea of projected weight loss, add in a couple of hundred "fake calories", and that should give you a (slightly underestimated) future weight loss.

We have a family history of T2, and my experience (3 family members, one T2 and 2 pre-diabetic all doing the 8 week BS diet within a few months of each other ), it really does do a metabolic reset which lasts for many, many months past the diet even if you return to your usual diet... but here's the thing, DON'T return to your usual diet! That's what made you fat and pre-diabetic in the first place Smile many of us just can't handle a high carb ("normal healthy") diet. For us, fewer carbs and more fat are a better choice. I'm cycling between Low/moderate carb (50-80g most days), but with regular fasting (a few days a month with

^This! Lose the weight however you want. Fast, slow, whatever works for you. Personally, I love the BSD diet, it works for me, and I don't find I'm particularly hungry on it - of course I am before meals, but that's how it should be anyway.

There seems to be some current thinking that the 'starvation mode' is a bit of a myth, who knows? - there's lots of conflicting science on it. But of course, it's true that as you lose weight your metabolism slows, because you weigh less.

But if your eating habits change back to how you ate before you lost the weight, then of course you'll gain the weight back, regardless of your metabolism - after all, that's how you gained the weight in the first place.

Good luck OP, it's tough, but I'm sure you'll get there.

Thanks everyone. I've been so tied up with my diet and will not eat shit" mantra.

Guess who forgot pancake day? Yup! I thought they'd just become the new cupcakes/doughnuts. Not faddy, and it's shrove Tuesday.

Will be pancakes served for DD for breakfast in the morning. She is not amused!

Thanks for all the support everyone!

Ahem. I have, as have 10s/100s of thousands of others. I'm just finishing week 8 of the BSD. I started at 120kg and have lost 13.5kg in just over 7 weeks by sticking to the plan and eating real food. I'm doing another 4 weeks before my 4 week break (where I shall do 5:2 sticking to the principles).

Science is slowly proving that everything we've been told about dieting for the last 60 years is utter bollocks. So I'm happy to be doing something that doesn't just make sense, it bloody works.

OP, PM me if you want to chat.

Hesdeadjim · 28/02/2017 21:52

titty you are one person, OP is another. I know the science of weight loss needs reform hence why I'm on keto, but 700cals a day is unsustainable.

TittyGolightly · 28/02/2017 21:54

The BSD is 800, moderate carbs and high fat. I haven't struggled at all. But I do have the determination not to fall off the wagon.

downwardfacingdog · 28/02/2017 23:35

'Starvation mode' happens when you are actually starving: when your body fat is so low that your body is forced to burn your muscles for fuel hence your bmr drops. It is not the reason for an overweight person at a SW group gaining weight after a week 'on plan' because they didn't eat enough. Had to stop going to SW because biting my tongue to not call bullshit on this when I heard it soon many times hurt!

I once did a 600 cal diet and lost 4 stone in less than 6 months, it was OK once I got past food misery (thinking about it all the time and hunger pangs) but unless your calorie intake remains low you'll likely end up putting back on. Also, as time goes on you stop noticing how grumpy you are (even if you don't feel miserable) but others won't! I lost weight relatively quickly on SW, especially if you have more to lose, and it's healthier and easier to maintain as a lifestyle.

WhereDoesThisRoadGo · 01/03/2017 00:27

To reach 21 stone I suspect you eat more than 2500 per day. I am 13 stone and burn a min of 1800 per day without even getting out of bed.

Regardless, why are you going into a diet with such restrictions when you have so much to lose? You are going to be at it for a long time and this approach is going to screw with your metabolism.

My suggestion is to pay for a body assessment to have your BMR properly worked out. Knock off 500-1000 calories off that (through diet and exercise) and settle in for the long hawl.

Speaking from experience here. I was 18 stone, now 13, 3 to go. It has taken 2 years so far.

haveacupoftea · 01/03/2017 00:28

It takes ages no matter what you weigh. Just remember though, if you give up you'll not be losing anything at all so you may as well stick with it and lose it slowly Smile don't go too OTT with trying to be good as that can affect your mental health. Good luck!

RiverdaleJughead · 01/03/2017 00:31

That is starvation mode. At 21 stone your daily calorie usage is around 3500 in a relatively sedentary lifestyle .. cutting to 2000 and exercising 2-3 times a week should cause a 1-2lb loss per week. You do not need to fast ( 700 is essentially a fast) .. focus on long term.

ferriswheel · 01/03/2017 00:33

If you at all possibly can try hard to concentrate on how you feel. Please don't give up because of your scales.

Well done on losing weight. Drink lots of water and stay hydrated. Buy a heart rate monitor to wear when you exercise - your heart rate changes depending on what you want to achieve (Cardiovascular or weight loss workout).
Eating healthy, correct portion size and regular exercise work better than calorie counting. If you don't balance your nutrition, your body will crave certain foods and make you miserable.

categed · 01/03/2017 01:12

Def work out your bmr this will help massively in making you more aware of how your body works.
If you are able to stick to the restrictive diet for the 8 weeks, do especially if it helps you avoid t2.
Low calories can work. I gain weight of I eat over 1000 Cals a day. I always have 😞 no matter the exercise. I now eat between 500-1000 calories a day, some days I go above but not often as I will gain. I know my bmr, calories in, calories out, how much water I take in etc. Most of my calories come from foods made from scratch, lots of salads and veg with some meat. For me this has been fantastic. No more stomach pain, weight loss, skin looks amazing, more energy, happier and more confident. In 6 months I lost all my (excessive) baby weight and more and kept it off. Until I ate too much over Christmas put some on, but it's coming off again.

The large picture wasn't at my heaviest and the smaller isn't at my lightest x
