School wants parent helpers...

I want to help and ds1 really wants me to help with his class outing to a puppet show. Will take 2 hours in total - walking the class to and from the theatre (15 mins max each way) and staying to the show. Fabulous - offered my services straight away and noted that I would have ds2 (4) and would be v happy to pay for a ticket for him. School have refused my offer - do they really expect parents to be free for 2 hours during the school day without other children if they are not working? Ds1 is very disappointed as am I - I helped out heaps at his old school and we are both really missing that aspect of our old life. I do think school are being somewhat unrealistic.

Parents are there to give their full adult attention to help support/control the pupils they accompany. That's the whole point of parent volunteers.

A parent with a smaller cild in tow will , of course, prioritise the needs of the 4 yr old (crying, bored, need a wee, breastfeed, meltdown) ; that's why the school can't accept it.

Breastfeed! He's nineteen!

EmilyGilmoresSass · 09/11/2022 15:18

Of course you can't bring other kids. It's not a family outing. You're needed for ratio ffs, not to add more kids to the equation.

Not to worry, they’ve probably gone to uni by now.

underneaththeash · 09/11/2022 15:26

That's normal OP.
I can't even have other children there during brownie outings (when we have parent helpers), as it affects ratios and insurance.

mn29 · 09/11/2022 15:28

I guess they just expect that some parents will have all children of school age or older. I never even considered helping out until youngest started school- certainly didn’t assume I could take youngest with me!

I'm a primary school teacher, and took 90 year one kids to a local forest by coach today. We took about 7 mummy helpers with us, and not one came with another child in tow!
It is most certainly NOT normal procedure for mummy helpers to bring siblings!! I've worked in many different primary schools, and I've never, ever seen that happen.
