To complain about customer service that other people received

I was getting lunch yesterday with DF and the DC in a large shopping centre. The restaurant we were in overlooked walkways in the shopping centre where there are little kiosks - think the ones that sell pretzels or frozen yogurts but this one sold mid/high end small appliances for a well known brand.

It was a bit of a novelty looking down at all the people and we soon noticed that the lady who was working (solo) on the kiosk was spending most of the time on her phone. It wasn't checking a quick text or an email, she was actively on her phone for 4-5 minutes at a time until she was approached by a customer.

After around 15 minutes a man approached her with a backpack and a coat on and she started gesturing at him as if she was complaining about something - this seemed a pretty strange way to speak to a customer. He then took his bag and coat off, stuffed them in a cabinet and put his name tag on. He obviously worked there.

Five minutes after standing around (still wearing his headphones) not doing much, he leant on one of the displays and then had a 15-20 minute facetime conversation with someone - from the body language of the employee and the person on the screen it came across as a boyfriend/girlfriend type of relationship.

Customers were walking up to him and he was ignoring them. After the facetime conversation ended he had customers asking him for help, he would wonder off and speak to his colleague for really long periods of time until the customers got frustrated and walked away.

I've never seen anything like this and my overinflated sense of justice is compelling me to report them - although, it's not really my place to report, or is it?

WIBU to send an email to the company in question and report them.

Don't want to drip feed -- this is embarrassing but I actually did make a video recording of a subset of the events mentioned above, mainly so that I could show DH.

I now have an image of hyacinth Bucket in my head....Wink

Trainspotting1984 · 27/02/2017 08:23

How do you know it wasn't their business though? If I understand the set up there is no reason to think it might not be

NormaSmuff · 27/02/2017 08:23

Very good point Trainspotting,

Bluntness100 · 27/02/2017 08:25

Sorry op, I also think you're over the line. To spend so much time watching them like this when having lunch with your children, (why not interact with your kids instead) and then to actually video them as well , which I think is illegal, is really unhealthy. Why would your husband even want to watch a video of them? 😯

No I wouldn't complain, if one of the customers wishes to they can. And delete the video. Honestly, your description of your afternoon is very unhealthy.

NerrSnerr · 27/02/2017 08:26

I am just imagining coming home from lunch and trying to show my husband a video of people on their phones when they should be working! He'd be really interested I'm sure.

The whole thing is bonkers. Why did you care so much. How would you have felt if someone had videoed you while you were eating your lunch?

gtyrfctsrght · 27/02/2017 08:28

I'd do it OP. This kind of 'service' winds me up no end.

Capricorn76 · 27/02/2017 08:29

Yes complain. I complained about a racist and rude woman working behind a make up counter at a large dept store. I didn't catch the beginning of the confrontation but I could hear her being quite aggressive with the customer and after the customer walked away she called her a 'fucking paki' under her breath to her colleague who started laughing. When they noticed I'd heard they both went quiet. I immediately went to dept manager who advised me to write to head office. She told me they had had complaints about this girl before. I got a response saying they were investigating and taking it further but they couldn't tell me the outcome. I really hope my letter was the final nail in the coffin and she was out on her ear.

I'm very glad I complained even though it wasn't aimed at me. I'd do it again too.

Bansteadmum · 27/02/2017 08:33

Shock At the poster being ageist!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 27/02/2017 08:39

This isn't about someone being anything -ist - in that situation it is for anyone who hears it to report. This is the OP sitting filming some workers who weren't doing much work.

OP - next time, ask them to speak up then you won't have to try to infer the guy's relationship with the person he was face timing and you will know what the convo between the colleagues was about

Bluntness100 · 27/02/2017 08:40

Capricorn, I'd have complained about that too, but it's very very different to what the op describes, which is sitting a level up in a restaurant, watching staff for well over half an hour, videoing them, not being able to hear any interactions, interpreting what you've seen and then complaining.

Bansteadmum · 27/02/2017 08:41

It's ageist to speculate that the OP, whose behaviour posters are criticising, could be over 60. FFS.

NormaSmuff · 27/02/2017 08:43

For which I apologised
then then suggested retired
which was also offensive apparently for making assumptions.
I then suggested the op was bored, which apparently didnt cause any offence Hmm

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 27/02/2017 08:47

Why would anyone assume the OP is over 60 or retired? What an odd thing to say. Confused

Bansteadmum · 27/02/2017 08:49

Are you deliberately being goady?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 27/02/2017 08:51

I think you need to myob.

You filmed them? Wow. You need to get a life!

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 27/02/2017 08:54

OP I don't know how old your DC are but would you be happy for some nosey randomer to film them for well over 15 minutes then show the video around? No? Thought not.

SpookyPotato · 27/02/2017 09:08

Why would you notice something like this...

Tattybogle89 · 27/02/2017 09:15

No it didn't affect you dont complain. If the customers involved want.to complain I'm sure they will. Filming just that, was a bit too far I reckon..

Bantanddec · 27/02/2017 09:19

Maybe these disgruntled customers have already complained about the poor service they received.
And get a hobby.

Rhayader · 27/02/2017 09:31

Haha, I actually AM a mystery shopper - which is probably why I noticed, over time you get to notice all the little things.

DF and I were both watching and talking about it, I don't really know if its relevant but the company who own the kiosk are a local company in the town where DF lives (pretty much the only employer) so I (and DF) know a lot of people who work there in the head office, i'm not sure if thats why I was particularly interested, usually I wouldn't GAF.

To the person saying we were table hogging... We really weren't, most of the time we were waiting for our food or waiting for DC1 to finish their lunch. Baby was also asleep in the pram and the restaurant was about 1/3 empty. We were sat right at the back in the empty section because of sleeping baby.

I'm not anywhere near 60 - not sure why that's relevant...

Rhayader · 27/02/2017 09:32

Only filmed for

OP posts:
NerrSnerr · 27/02/2017 09:37

But why would your husband want to see that? I cannot understand how someone else would find it interesting?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 27/02/2017 10:09

Course you are a mystery shopper Hmm

Funny how you didn't mention that in your OP

kali110 · 27/02/2017 10:19

Doesn't matter how much you filmed!
In all the years of having mystery shoppers in the places that i've worked noone has ever recorded us! Shock

ThisThingCalledLove · 27/02/2017 10:36

I totally think you are a mystery shopper.

In your head.
