To ask for credit score help

This isn't really Aibu, but needed help!
I have just done a check on Experian as wanted to know my credit score, they've shown the number but don't go in to detail as you have to pay for that! So couldn't work out if it was good or bad!
So I tried another one and it was a completely different number
Experian maximum score was 900, the other one I tried was maximum 600Hmm. What's the best company to use?

Well what score did Experian give you? If their maximum is 900 and you scored below half, I would say that was a fairly poor credit score, anything above 600 would be a good one. Can't you figure it out from that?

Soubriquet · 26/02/2017 14:51

Try clearscore

Not as accurate but it gives you a breakdown of what affects your credit score

Candypops14 · 26/02/2017 14:52

It was 740, which I thought must mean it's not to bad, but on the little arrow thing it had by the number is said poor/fair.

Check that you are registered to vote at your current address.... that's a biggie
Have you any lines of credit? No ... will bring your score down .... yes can bring it up but only if no late payments.
Of the credit lines that you have, are you using more than 50%.... so is your credit card maxed out?
Payday loans? Not likely to bring it up.
Do you share accounts with other people? Joint bank account etc.... do they keep on top of their bills?
How long at current address? Longer is good
Any ccj etc.... that will bring it down.
Credit rating is not infallible and is used by banks and other lenders only to get a feel of what you are like as a credit risk.... they like people who are boring and pay bills on time.... have a credit card or two which is never behind on payments... have lived in the same place for at least 2 years and are on the electoral roll etc...

Socksey · 26/02/2017 14:56

740 is good but not excellent but you are likely to be able to access the good interest rates with that.

Soubriquet · 26/02/2017 14:56

740 is great!

Much better than mine. We are in bad debt but slowly working it out

Magzmarsh · 26/02/2017 14:56

That does sound confusing. I've never used Experien because they only seem to want money off you, as Soubriquet suggests, try Clearscore.

This might help, not sure if the link will work but you can copy and paste into the space bar.

The clearscore shows 8 positives and 2 negatives which are credit card limit is low and credit card% utilisation is relatively high.

I use clear score... mines not even in the 100s. I have no debt so my trusted Confused I've had to get credit cards

scarletmonkey · 26/02/2017 15:33

You could try Noddle, that's free and gives a fairly detailed breakdown.
It shows credit scores, financial associations, whether bills are up to date etc etc

Candypops14 · 26/02/2017 15:38

Thanks will try noodle next!

Honestly ignore your credit score it's about as useful as a chocolate teapot.
The main things that affect your ability to get credit are:

Electoral role (make sure you are on it)
Credit utilisation -are you maxed out on your credit cards and only paying the minimum payment?
Bad debt - CCjs defaults etc stay on your credit report for 6 years. Once paid they are marked as satisfied. You can write to Experian if you are in dispute over something and they will addd a note to your file

Other than that credit scores are rubbish and no lender will be able to see them.
