To want to wear a burkini

voldemortsnose · 26/02/2017 12:28

Lighthearted rant coming. Huge respect for the fact that some people want the choice to wear a burkini and thought it was ludicrous when a place in France, a democracy, was requiring women to bear more on beaches last Summer. (How dare men require women to do that etc etc ...)
My issue is that I have just spent an hour of my Sunday which could have been spent with my family attempting to remove the hair that every woman in the planet has so I can go for a swim with my family this afternoon. Normal swimwear requires that I either a) expose my pubes or b) go through a painful, time consuming process which will leave me feeling prickly still in a week's time. I don't like seeing my leg or underarm hair either, so that's had to go too, but even if I was cool with it, the general public would judge. How did we arrive at this nonsense and what's to be done? And where can I get a burkini?

It is shit how at home I'm a leg haired, armpit fluffed, giant bushed lady but if I were to go somewhere requiring swimwear I would feel I need to very all, if on holiday at least the first half be fairly groomed, gradually becoming a half leg shaved and armpits only done if growth really obvious all because I feel gross about it in public because society says so. I hate that I feel like that and wish I was more confident with it. I do armpits but normally when I know I won't be reaching or top hides it.

It's really sad.

DioneTheDiabolist · 26/02/2017 14:41

As long as you're comfortable and keep swimming OP.Smile But remember, most people in the pool don't notice, they're eitherhavingtoo much fun to pay any attention or because they are blind without their glasses. Like me.Grin

Qqnamechange · 26/02/2017 14:43

Lolz at racist Burkini wearing

Although someone told me last night that celebrating St Patrick's days if you aren't Irish is cultural appropriation. So yeah.

UndersecretaryofWhimsy · 26/02/2017 14:46

My red-haired, fair-skinned friend wears a burkini because she can't be bothered to apply Factor 50 every 10 minutes. She got it online and she loves it. Get one if you want one.

originalbiglymavis · 26/02/2017 14:48

I want one of those masks the swimmers wear - is it in China? - to stop them getting jellyfish stings on the face. A bit like wrestlers masks.

Crunchyside · 26/02/2017 14:54

Has no-one mentioned Nigella yet? She was snapped by paparazzi wearing a burkini at the beach a few years back. And she is usually fairly glam.

I would not like the top of nigellas birkini because it seems dress like. (I.e. It would let tonnes of water up it). I'd much prefer a long sleeved rash vest which stops at the same Place as a normal top

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 26/02/2017 19:34

It would probably take me an hour to remove all my potentially-exposed-by-a-swimsuit hair, but that's only because I couldn't give the shiniest of shits about body hair and hardly ever do it. I would take issue at people staring at my bikini line hard enough to see some escaping hairs.

MrsTerryPratchett · 26/02/2017 19:41

There's a million options. I just got this.

But there are stinger suits, rash guards, swimming leggings, board shorts (I know you don't like them), burkini etc.

What makes me pissy is the fact that you have a hard time finding decent board shorts for girls and women. It's like designers think that men surf and women look cute while men surf. And girls' suits are so revealing and boys stuff isn't. We all burn to a crisp in two minutes in the UK in March so I need everyone covered up!

Wear whatever you feel most comfortable in.

You don't need to shave yourself from top to toe to go swimming or to the beach. No one will notice or care even if they did see it.

MiddleClassProblem · 26/02/2017 19:49

I used to get mine in republic but then I got to big. The plus size ones I found were crap. I wish I had the money to design plus size clothing that wasn't frumpy, tent like or saying you had to look vintage or have giant flowers on everything.

APurpleOrange · 26/02/2017 20:06

Nit directed at you OP, but I am just wondering what the issue is with wearing a burkini for a swim? It is a garment for swimming. Covering up isn't just a privilege limited for the Muslims. Anyone can if they so choose. I cannot believe that we fought for our rights wear what we want, no matter how revealing, and now all of a sudden we are afraid to wear what we want, if considered too concealing -( i am not referring to the face)

ToffeeForEveryone · 26/02/2017 21:05

That's gorgeous MrsTerryPratchett, where's it from?

voldemortsnose · 27/02/2017 09:10

APurple you hit the nail on the head, that's exactly what I meant. And whilst this thread was meant to be a lighthearted moan for those of us who are not Muslim, the sight of armed police standing over a woman and forcing her to disrobe is kind of terrifying (mobile.nytimes.com/2016/08/25/world/europe/france-burkini.html?_r=0&referer=). I know France has a particular tradition of secularism, but they did seem to lose sight of freedom of expression in all that.
My OP was about what's expected of the rest of us. Tiny pants and pubes do not go together in public, but the tiny pants are the norm. Like most women, pube type hairs go a long way down my thigh. The only time I've seen anything like a legsuit was not at our local pool and I'd forgotten about it. When I find the right legsuit, I'm going to take a stand!
I need a two piece as I'm tall and it does need to be long. I'm pear shaped (which is not code for fat, PP who seemed to think so) it means I'm a size wider on the hips than the bust and the curves don't look good in a cut suited to a more apple shape. This was just as true when I was a size ten as it is now. Short shorts cut me at my widest part, which is very unflattering. Board shorts just look ludicrous as they are cut for slim not curvy hips. No amount of weight loss will change that. I actually think board shorts on women look really cool, whereas on me they look like middle age mum got hold of her teenage son's clothes and is having some sort of midlife crisis.

@WorraLiberty, @originalbiglymavis - what's the fit like on that swimsuit? I'm taller than average, so was wondering if it's cut generously?

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/02/2017 15:56

[http://www.sirensswimwear.com.au/p/marilyn-tummy-control-swim-dress-midnight-rose-gar/S15-Mari-BFRL Here]] for the swim dress, @ToffeeForEveryone.

I think it's stupid what the market supplies for women. But someone more artistic than me should get off their arse and start a company for the rest of us.

originalbiglymavis · 27/02/2017 16:40

I'm 5'7 and it's cut OK - slightly longer in the leg than I'd want but that's fine, and not waaaay down your cleavage.

Happyandhungry · 27/02/2017 16:44

I wear swimdresses. Flattering and pube hiding too and make me feel confident even when i am having a "fat" day Smile

PandasRock · 27/02/2017 16:45

I wear either a tankini top or a rash vest, with swim shorts from fatface - they're not board shorts, as shorter (think school pe shorts length).

I do shave underarms (for swimming) but generally can't be bothered with legs.

There are loads of options out there if you look around.

PandasRock · 27/02/2017 16:47

Shorts like these

Applebite · 27/02/2017 17:22

Aren't burkinis really heavy when wet? It seems like a lot of fabric!

Astoria7974 · 27/02/2017 17:27

Burkinis are too heavy for the beach. Usually only appropriate if you're in a country where covering up is either legally required or safer health-wise. Slazenger do a boy leg suit which is what I use. But it has no padding so you will show the outline of your nipples instead of your pubes.

MollyHuaCha · 27/02/2017 17:35

I object to the notion of a women feeling obliged to cover up for cultural or religious reasons.

But if she actually wants to protect her skin from the sun, for example because she is on immunosuppressant medicine and needs to guard against skin cancer, then a burkini could do the job nicely.

(But so probably could a sarong...)
