To be really really perturbed by the bridesmaid heart disease advert

I know this has been posted before but I hadn't seen it. I have a hopefully mild heart condition myself so I don't know if this is why, but it has made me feel like just bloody awful. Really sad and a bit tearful.

I know they want to raise awareness but this one got me more than any advert ever has. I dont even know why I am posting really but does anyone feel the same about this one?

Me too...mawkish and upsetting , but with no real suggestions, hel p or MESSAGE apart from 'people die of heart disease' which, whilst true, is not really a message that needs an ad campaign.

Something saying ' help your heart...exercise a bit' or ' lay off the beer to help your heart' or 'this might be a symptom you need to tell the doctor about', I could see the point of

heartisshattered · 22/02/2017 22:47

The one of the boy at school and his dad speaking to him in the classroom and then vanishing as the headmaster comes to get him from class because his father's actually died creeped me right out

I think that was the British Heart Foundation

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 22/02/2017 22:57

My 10 year old saw this advert while with me last week. She's absolutely distraught over it. Like others have said it does nothing to raise awareness.

My friends dad died suddenly on her wedding day while she was alone with him waiting for the limo to take them to church. It was bloody horrendous.

sashh · 22/02/2017 23:25

agree, it's upsetting- but what I find difficult is that it doesn't give any symptoms or ways in which you can check your heart.

Well the conditions that have young people dropping dead suddenly are usually congenital with no prior symptoms.

Lushka · 22/02/2017 23:55

Bloody hell sparepants that sounds horrific.

Stripyhoglets · 22/02/2017 23:57

My DD was upset by this advert too - I think it's too much to show before the watershed and wasn't impressed tbh.

Surreyblah · 22/02/2017 23:59

I too found it upsetting and don't understand the intended message.

Heart conditions kill young people too and can have no or few symptoms? Don't understand why that's a message to communicate.

Chickennuggetfeeder · 23/02/2017 07:47

Just saw the bridesmaid ad. Theres no point to it.

Tentativesteps133 · 23/02/2017 08:17

Saw it last night and agree with you all - I don't understand what message it is trying to put across. There's no clear link as to how your donation might help prevent a young person with no previous symptoms from keeling over. I had an irrational fear in the run up to my wedding that something similar would happen to one of our loved one so I'm glad this advert wasn't around then.

Surreyblah · 23/02/2017 08:31

There's another heart charity specifically active on this, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY).

sniffle12 · 23/02/2017 08:35

Yes I've had testing from Cardiac Risk in the Young, they do great work. If the ad made clear that they wanted to raise funds to test young people for undetected heart irregularities it would have made more sense, but as it is it just shocked and saddened me without really telling me how to act on that feeling.

Ciutadella · 23/02/2017 08:40

Is this kind of ad effective in raising donations I wonder? I agree that it was very shocking.

Dormouse200 · 23/02/2017 09:50

I know it's not quite the same but there's a radio advert for Macmillan that starts 'I have cancer' I turn the radio off every time and it's been 2 years since my MIL died, the irony is that we didn't even get support from one of the cancer charities as MIL wouldn't let them in the door! But after she died the adverts for charities were an almost daily reminder - stand up to cancer, stoptober, we are Macmillan, Marie Curie.

If she'd died of a heart attack like that advert shows then it would have been a thousand times worse. Hope they stop showing it soon OP and all PP's who find it upsetting.

Courgetti2203 · 23/02/2017 13:08

I'm the same as heartisshattered. The one with the young boy and I'd father visiting is really upsetting for me. My dad passed away from a massive heart attack whilst at work two years ago. That advert really hit home Sad

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 23/02/2017 13:26

YANBU.

When I was at the motorway services over the weekend there were BHF stickers on the mirrors in the loos, part of the same ad campaign.

I can't remember the exact wording, but it was saying about how you could die right now from a heart attack while you're just looking in the mirror and worrying about your hair. The tap would still be running but you're dead. That sort of thing Hmm there was one next to every sink. Again, nothing to say what symptoms to look out for or any way you could prevent it. It seemed rather inappropriate. I'm not usually one for won't somebody think of the children?! but I'm sure it would upset plenty of adults, let alone children who might read it.

Buxtonstill · 23/02/2017 17:01

The thing that upsets me is that following my Dad's death from heart disease, we collected £2.5 k in lieu of flowers and sent to the British Heart Foundation. Received a cut and paste thank you; and then further requests throughout the year for further donations. (when we sent the donation we sent a letter, so no little box to tick to say don't put our details on a mailing list)

We probably paid for 1 second of that advert. Next time will give direct to a local charity. I realise that charities have to run appeals to raise further money, but I also know how much money is wasted by the larger charities, My husband is an accountant and specialises in cahrity accountancy.

Stopandlook · 23/02/2017 17:05

YANBU. It's not raising awarenesss, it is an advertising agency generating money for the charity in a way that is completely insensitive to anyone who has lost someone suddenly. I found the one where the kid sees his Dad at school coming to say goodbye worse, because that was me and my recurring nightmare years afterwards.

littlefrog3 · 23/02/2017 17:11

YANBU. I hate it. I really do. I just think it's in such poor taste.

I also hate the vile corsodyl ad, where they spit blood into the sink and/or the teeth fall out. Utterly vile, and it's always on at bloody meal times! Angry

In addition, I hate the 'stroke' advert, and also the one begging for money for cancer, with the people (women usually,) having chemo, and saying 'thank you for being with me yada yada.'

Can't help it; I just hate them.

user1490395938 · 15/05/2017 04:47

Yes I agree, I found this advertisement by the BHF rather disturbing, also the other one where the young boy is in his lesson at school when his dad suddenly appears to say he won't be coming home tonight. I'm really sensitive to things like this and it plays on my mind for hours and days after I've seen it.
Sorry for all those of you who've lost loved ones. Hugs xx
