I know AIBU posting here, but there is where I first heard of it and know this board is busy.

Javelin Arse as I discovered it to be called on here. Which I thought was hilarious. Well, not tonight.

I've gone from diarumpus earlier, to the worst JA I've ever had, but nothing much else happening, other than pain and pressure in my stomach like there's something to go. After the JA pains I have pain in my stomach just standing up or coughing (and I have the cold). Any normal period cramps I get are really quite mild.

Has anyone been able to get rid of this? Or even know what causes it? I've had it every month for probably a couple of years now, but I'm 34, so it's relatively new. The pain takes my breath away, in those few seconds it's happening. Sorry if this is all normal and I'm being overly dramatic. Call it hormones.

Have never heard the term 'Javelin Arse' before! Have experienced it though! I think the medical term is Proctalgia Fugax. I will think of it as JA from now on. I find a hot bath helps.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 22/02/2017 01:12

I always thought it was just me until I heard javelin arse on here too!!Grin

I have to breathe like I'm in labour to get through it. Also have to do the same for the fist shit I take when I'm on my period first day - it feels like I'm birthing a human tbh

mygorgeousmilo · 22/02/2017 07:32

Oh my god this is a thing??! I thought it was just me Shock

AllTheWittyNamesAreGone · 22/02/2017 07:36

I take buscopan for my JA and its a revelation!

I'm so grateful for mumsnet. Normalizing javelin arse and period poos

Do you know, it's taken me til this thread to figure out that my JA was period related!
Nodding away, thinking "oh god, yeah, I used to get that", and then it dawned on me that it completely disappeared once I had my coil fitted and my periods stopped.
I had genuinely never made the connection before!

nether · 22/02/2017 07:40

I thought you meant juvenile arthritis - please be aware you're using a real medical acronym in your thread title.

(Wasn't the MN name for this 'fanny daggers'? I rather liked that term)

MegaBlocksBaby · 22/02/2017 07:47

I had this yesterday, I've had it for years though. It was agony, I was moaning loudly in the kitchen and the baby looked very alarmed and burst into tears Shock it's a nightmare. You all have my sympathies!

girlandboy · 22/02/2017 07:53

I get this too, and have for as long as i can remember. Doesn't seem connected to my periods though. Perhaps it's a different thing to what you're describing though because my Dad used to get it too! Confused

HappySeven · 22/02/2017 08:01

I get this but have never related it to my period. Mine happens sometimes after a long run. Not every time and not necessarily if I've worked hard. It's horrible, wish I knew how to stop it!

WhoKn0wsWhereTheTimeG0es · 22/02/2017 08:07

I used to get it, randomly in the middle of the night, not agonising but impossible to sleep till it had eased off over a couple of hours. Not so much in the guts for me, but further down. I had a prolapse repair surgery about 5 years ago and virtually never get it now, I didn't twig for ages till I got a mild bout of it and thought "hang on, I don't get this any more".

CaoNiMa · 22/02/2017 08:28

Javelin Arse and fanny gallops are my favourite MN phrases.

I get the dreaded JA during my period. I'm on now, and just realised I haven't had it yet this month. I'm now sitting in fear of it striking. clenches buttocks

Mulberry72 · 22/02/2017 08:49

Javelin Arse!!!! I'm SO glad it's not just me! I've had it when I've been at the checkout in Tesco and had to cling to my trolley until it's passed! Blush

chipscheesentomatosauce · 22/02/2017 08:55

I've got it again today. Sitting at my desk in work. Theres only four of us here and it's only a matter of time before they hear me yelp!

WeddingsAreStressful · 22/02/2017 09:08

I get it too!!!! I thought it was just me. No cure here though.

downwardfacingdog · 22/02/2017 09:14

Do you also have heavy periods? A combo of tranexamic acid and max dose ibuprofen taken from the day before I'm due on made a big difference to me. I used to be in agony every month, but am much better now.

downwardfacingdog · 22/02/2017 09:14

^^both prescribed by GP

chipscheesentomatosauce · 22/02/2017 09:53

Not particularly heavy I don't think.

Just had a successful bathroom trip after that last episode of it, so it seems to have stopped for now. Now just the dull pain if moving too fast or coughing.

Think I'll try the buscopan before bothering the doctor since it's obviously pretty common and I'm not dying!

CJCreggsGoldfish · 22/02/2017 09:58

Thank god. I get this and had no idea it was a thing. It's pretty fleeting when it happens, but takes my breath away and stops me in my tracks. I don't think it happens every month, but is definitely increasing in frequency with age.

Idefix · 22/02/2017 10:04

Was just coming on to say buscopan Grin I think the diarrhoea and constipation thing can also be hormone related.

Donttouchmycoat · 22/02/2017 11:59

I thought I was the only one to have this....Feels like I'm in labour, usually kicks in in the middle of the night too, spend hours on the loo trying to give birth Grin. Glad to know I'm not alone. Off to the chemist now to stock up on some buscopan

chipscheesentomatosauce · 22/02/2017 13:20

I had my lunch about 45 minutes and have now had another episode of JA followed by diarrhoea. Is this possibly some sort of period related IBS?

OP posts:
origamiwarrior · 22/02/2017 14:01

Javelin arse is period related. You have 'visceral hypersensitivity'. Women have this hypersensitivity during their period. It's when the normal movements within your gut (which you get all month, but never normally notice) trigger abnormal perceptions of pain (because of this hypersensitivity during your period). I used to work on a drug that was being developed to treat it. Sadly it was abandoned before it was approved for use.

People with IBS frequently have visceral hypersensitivity, so any IBS drugs (antispasmodics - temporarily stop the 'normal' movements that cause the pain during your period) or painkillers will help.

HashiAsLarry · 22/02/2017 14:06

I have Ibs anyway so always assumed it was my period triggering it off. origamis explanation makes sense
