Is it unreasonable to beep your horn when someone is up your arse?

Would they get the hint?

Not that I would have the guts. But is it a thing people do?

Doesn't happen often, but it did today. I drive to the speed limit. I don't ever speed up or slow right down, just angrily flick them out of sight and glare through my rear view mirror...and seethe silently.

Beeping the horn is unreasonable and is illegal. Ypu can be fined for misuse by the way.
I completely ignore them. They're behind you. Let them sort themselves out. If you get involved in watching them/flicking lights on/beeping then you're not payong attention to what is happening in front of you. Then you could cause an accident.

No, don't beep.
Wash front window or gradually slow down as pp have said. Works for me, I'm frequently tailgated by 'boy racers' wanting a race Hmm (possibly due to the car that I drive Wink )

fairweathercyclist · 22/02/2017 08:06

I've slowed down when this has happened to me, just letting the car slow naturally rather than not touching the brake. They had the temerity to beep!

I don't know why we don't a happy medium on the roads. You get people who dawdle along (usually because they're on their phones), and then you get the ones who will overtake you even if you are doing the speed limit for the road concerned. Why can't everyone just drive to the road conditions and speed limits? Is it that hard? It obviously is!

But my general view is, if you have time to beep, you have time to consider better and safer options

My mum says this - she says if you've time to beep, you've time to brake.

AlexanderBerry · 22/02/2017 13:22

Someone i used to work with used to just move the angle of the rear view mirror so she couldn't see the tailgater so they didn't bother her!

KurriKurri · 22/02/2017 14:47

I always try to pull over and let them pass if I get the chance. I hate having arsehole drivers round me - I want them to pass me and go away.

xStefx · 22/02/2017 14:52

I slow right down and put the wind screen washers on, seems to work.

Penrithtearooms · 22/02/2017 20:39

Beeping would be antagonizing! Screenwashers are innocent enough :) Will remember that! :p Lol at those car stickers. Is there one that just says BUGGER OFFFF! Grin

I slow down gradually.

OopsDearyMe · 22/02/2017 20:43

Its actually a bylaw I think !

maddening · 22/02/2017 20:44

Hazard lights are my fave - they are obviously having trouble seeing me else they wouldn't be so close so I alert them to my presence.

Penrithtearooms · 22/02/2017 20:49

ha. maddening 'Here I am :)'

Get a dash cam. We also have a big sticker on the back that says in car recording.

They soon back off when they read it.

Bloody hate tailgating.

PickleSarnie · 22/02/2017 21:09

I bought a dash cam wifey when I was stationary at lights and the car in front of me when into reverse instead of 1st when the lights turned green. Thankfully he braked before he went into my (at the time) week old car.

I didn't fit it in the end because of the faff to hide the wires so took it back. In a way I'm glad because it was just be footage of me fishwifing at the kids to stop bickering and yelling at audis 3 inches from my bumper.

Thinkingblonde · 22/02/2017 23:41

Slowing down to 10 miles an hour is actually impeding the flow of traffic. You're more than likely to be pulled over by the police for it.
l have seen this happen, I was in the middle of a queue of slow moving traffic, there was no obvious reason for the hold up, no accident or breakdown, no road works. The weather was good.
A police car overtook us all, soon after this the traffic began to speed up. lol and behold further up the road I passed the police car and another car.
My nephew is a traffic cop, he told me that cctv along that stretch of road had shown a huge tail back of traffic with no obvious cause apart from the first car driving at a snails pace, the traffic police had been sent out to investigate, they pulled the driver over who told them he was teaching the driver behind him a lesson!

StarryIllusion · 23/02/2017 00:36

If I've stopped for lights and they're right up my arse I shift into reverse and rev the engine. They shit themselves and back off quick smart.
