To think charity shops aren't playgroups?

Well...not THAT exactly but tell me this...why do people think it's ok to allow their small pre-school children to pull out all of the toys on sale in charity shops and to then play with them in the aisle?

I can't stand to see this! The toys are on sale and these DC are there banging them and playing roughly with them...making a ton of noise, mess and getting in the way.

Is it normal to see this? Or just where I live? Their parents are always happily browsing around whilst the kids make a God awful mess.

Just because the toys are second hand does not mean they're a free for all...yet people treat them like the toys in the doctor's waiting room!

I saw this all the time when I worked in a CS but usually the toys are only about £1 and if they got too rough with them I'd just casually say - ooh isn't he having fun with that? And then to the kid ' is that your favourite toy?' And usually the kid then kicks off at the mum to buy him it so they do for an easy life - mwahaha

Sundial I didn't post that. Read the thread properly. Also, are you sober yet?

OMG OP, what a day you have had.

Traumatised by small children playing in aisles.
Terrorised by tots in charity shops.
Being struck dumb by the thought of having to say 'excuse me'.
Having to bear the sight of sopping hellhound children playing pat-a-cake with the arses of multiple drunk strangers.

All of that and you are now losing your memory too. It's just tragic. Here is a nice pic of the post you made earlier.

or bite a chunk out of 30 cucumbers in Sainsbury's

Does anyone else now really want to let their toddler do this then hide round the corner and watch people's reactions on picking up every cucumber? No? Just me? Grin

I was in a charity shop this afternoon where a little girl was playing on a toy that made various noises on pushing different buttons. It didn't bother me and she wasn't in the way but it did briefly cross my mind that it was a shame the batteries would be unlikely to last long for the child whose parent will eventually pay for it.

I've never noticed it as a big problem in general though.

Tomsdottir · 22/02/2017 00:26

Maybe put up a notice saying "Guess which one of these toys we have sprayed with bleach/pee to win a free 1998 train timetable."

mathanxiety · 22/02/2017 00:31

YABVU.

I charity shop quite a bit at one particular place where there are toys, and children play with them all the time. Often a toy that seems to really engage a child gets bought. The charity shop just wants to move the merchandise and if this gets the job done then all is well. They are not running a museum.

There are also housewares and furniture in this particular place, and I never go without hearing at least one plate or glass hit the concrete floor. I also see people sitting on the furniture while they wait for someone to finish browsing.

sundial maybe you should look a bit closer at who is posting when you're trying to goad, op didn't post about any drunks....

I would always get a bit sad when someone bought one of the comfy sofas/armchairs when I was working in the charity shop as I would sit down on them and drink my tea and read my book when we had no customers. Best job ever.

KittyVonCatsington · 22/02/2017 06:50

^that's why I bloody hate these 'user' usernames!

user1477282676 · 22/02/2017 07:39

Kitty yes but if you're going to INSIST someone posted something then at least look at the last few digits. It's not hard.

Why don't people change their user names to something other than users and number string?

I don't change my name because I can't remember my password.

You can log out then click that you need a password reset when you try to log back in.

Somerville · 22/02/2017 09:02

Oh and...
It's not hard.

Getting a password reset is much less hard than every other user on the site needing to keep track of your numbers.

notsmartenough · 22/02/2017 09:40

I volunteer in a charity shop and we rarely have problems with the children playing with toys. If they make a mess they or their parent/s usually clear up.
The adults break more things.

The manager did have to have a word with one mum who left her child in our shop, then went out to do her shopping.
