Sad
What can I do to show support?

What a horrible lesson for the children.

This story needs to be well publicised as I'm sure everyone who reads it will be disgusted by the treatment of a British citizen.

TronaldFrump · 21/02/2017 07:52

Agreed Broken the UK govt should absolutely comment on this as a matter of diplomatic urgency. This isn't a private local political matter concerning one teacher in Wales.
He is just a normal British citizen with a UK passport like many of us have and he was given an American travel ban.

BeyondThePage · 21/02/2017 07:53

It happens all the time though - not just since Trump. The executive order was not in place on that date, I'm guessing something in his prior travel history was flagged.

StealthPolarBear · 21/02/2017 07:54

Yes the article even says the order is currently suspended.

twinmamma2b · 21/02/2017 08:02

Ah yes, Mega! Sorry I didn't read this article as I had read a different one where it didn't mention that he only had British nationality. That poor man.

TronaldFrump · 21/02/2017 08:04

If anyone wants to show support you could email or write to your MP about it, asking them to ask the UK govt to seek assurances for British citizens from the US govt about this issue.
And you could also send a supportive card to the teacher, or email to the school Smile since the name of the school has been reported so is in the public domain- as in the article linked to in the OP- Llangatwg comprehensive in Aberdulais.

ArgyMargy · 21/02/2017 08:08

Beyondthepage if that were the case he would not have been granted a visa.

BartholinsSister · 21/02/2017 08:33

I hear 40,000 Pakistani muslims are being booted out of Saudi Arabia amid "security concerns", it seems the bigotry is contagious.

FilmaWlintstone · 21/02/2017 13:14

As a side note (v unimportant in comparison)

Isn't the school going to have a huge cost flying another adult out there to keep their ratios ok?

ArgyMargy - depends when his visa was issued. If he had a visa (10 year valid)/ESTA (2 years valid) from Obama days, he may not have known it was rescinded.

BillSykesDog · 21/02/2017 13:56

This. The order is suspended, we don't know why this happened. He could have an undeclared criminal conviction, a dodgy online presence, several months unexplained presence in 'Turkey'. I have even known somebody who was denied entry because they had posted their CV to a US job site in error (thinking it was UK) several months before and then travelled without a work visa.

Being turned away from the US is not uncommon and happens for lots of reasons.

BillSykesDog · 21/02/2017 13:59

An ESTA is not a guarantee of entry.

Neome · 21/02/2017 14:00

Thank you for your suggestions and for the sense of solidarity. I was so upset I emailed my MP in the middle of the night!

Great suggestion to send a card to the school.

This is absolutely awful. The poor teacher Sad can't imagine how his pupils and colleagues must have felt either Sad I'm so confused. I thought the ban was only put in place for citizens of the seven countries initially mentioned, and that the ban had been lifted?? I'm still so shocked the government were even able to put the ban in place - it's surreal.

I wonder if a petition to support the teacher (and ask the US embassies and government for an explanation) would be useful? What do you all think? At least it'll generate publicity, and might make some sort of difference.

Thanks for posting about this, OP.

ArgyMargy · 21/02/2017 16:35

He could have an undeclared criminal conviction, a dodgy online presence, several months unexplained presence in 'Turkey' Really? Really? A Welsh teacher?

Neome · 21/02/2017 22:56

He sounded so dignified, puzzled and hurt on a video clip (and very welsh). He was saying he wanted an explanation so perhaps a petition for that would be a supportive idea.

Awful - but sadly not unique to America. We're just not used to it happening to us and ours.

Years ago, I worked briefly in Lesotho as a student one summer. One of the guys who ran the organisation we were with was due to have a 14 day trip to the UK while we were out there. He was back within 2 days. Apparently Heathrow 'didn't have any reason to think he wouldn't try and stay in the UK' .

The purpose of his trip was to network with UK charities, universities and churches to get information, resources and funding for their organisation - the country's only charity aimed at educating young people about the dangers of HIV and Aids and training and equipping them to work with other young people at risk or suffering. But he was a poor, uneducated black man whose flight and brand new passport had been paid for. So of course he was untrustworthy.

Made me ashamed to be British
