I don't know which thread this should go in.... but my son (17 month) took a febrile seizure 2 days ago, I've not slept and not let him out of my sight since because I'm petrified it will happen again, has anyone else's kids took these fits? Please reassure me

TIA XX

onelump
there is a 1 in 3 chance of having a first fc
of those 1 in 3 will have second , so you are not more than likely to have a second. only abiut 1% of the population will have more than 2 and very rare to have over the age of 5.

Saying that my family has a gefs+ and my ds had over 20 and the last one age 13. My DM and Dsis had fc until the age of 10.
Also ds was complex as he often had more than one.
My dcs were tonic clonic seizures but not epilepsy. Dd had 4 at the age of 3.
Ds doesnt remember anything and slept for ages after .

Op i had a one as a baby. Must have been terrifing for my mum but i have no memory. I never had any more until end of pregnancy when out of the blue i had a couple. Hope your ds is ok but it be worse for you watching. Fingers crossed its a one off x

I respond for the ambulance service (CFR/volunteer) and my husband is a paramedic. I've seen quite a few of these and know they are truly terrifying. I don't know why we aren't taught about them in antenatal classes - I had no idea they existed at all. But be reassured: is he fine now? Did he get over it quickly? Can you talk to your practice nurse or health visitor about your worries and what to do if it happens again?

DD had one at 2, and one last night (3). Absolutely fucking terrifying the first time because I hadn't a clue what was happening and my brother has epilepsy so I panicked. Last night I cooled her down and wet her hair with lukewarm water. Hope you're ok OP.

i was told to call ambulance if it sent over 5 minutes. I was also given rectal diazipam if that happened.

My DD has had two, once when she was 2 brought on by chicken pox and he other aged 5 brought on by tonsillitis. It's the sudden spike in temperature that causes it, so after the first one I was militant about checking her temperature when she was poorly! Got more relaxed as she got older so the second one caught me out! She's now 9 and not had any more.

There's no long lasting effects and DD doesn't remember them. The second time the hospital said we didn't need to call if it happened again just keep an eye on her and only call 999 if she stopped breathing or it went on for more than 10 minutes.

Now 10 minutes is a bloody long time when your child is fitting but it really is just their body coping with the temperature so make sure he is on the floor so he is safe, undo his clothing to help him cool down, check his breathing and keep talking (this last bit calms you down!). I was calmer the second time because I knew what it was, still scary though.

We just got told to go to a&e and they checked his blood, heart rate & temperature and kept us in until his temperature was down enough.... they gave me a leaflet that tells me to put in in the recovery position, I think if it does happen again I'll be calmer.... but at the time he was lying on my knee sleeping (he had a runny nose and slight cough) and started jerking and when I picked him up he was going blue and his eyes were rolling I ran out side and was knocking my neighbor door for help but no one was in, But he's got up this morning and looks like a different child looks as if he's back to normal so I'm feeling a lot better today.
