To miss perms?!

I grew up in the 80's and had a few perms over the years and loved them! My DC of course piss themselves at the pictures but a perm was the best thing ever! (Do you remember the first hair wash after getting it done, so nerve-wracking in case they all fell outGrin)
So this morning I was driving into work and this older schoolboy was walking along with the most magnificent head of tight curls blowing in the wind Grin I'm pretty sure it was natural (men don't do perms anymore surely) but it brought back fond memories of my yoof.

What fabulous hair styles did you crazy MN'ers have back in the day?!

Sharon RESPECT!! Grin

My plastic hood disintegrated! But I remember the hairdryer... turquoise morphy richards one.

I had a friend who had a dryer like the ones in the hairdressers, a table top version - now that was a thing to be envied Grin She was always very sophisticated!

My Mum had a perm throughout the 80's. Her hair was exactly like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Her naturally curly hair became tamed and looser with a perm. As kids my hair was scrunched dried. I wouldn't have dared asked for a perm though. She used to roller out hair a lot and it didn't take much to make my hair look like a clowns wig. The risk was too great, and besides my sun in damaged hair was bad enough!

I had one of those too but honestly it was shit. It cost me £90 second hand in the 90's. It was so unwieldy and kept breaking down. I bought my silver hood on a whim for £12. It was so much faster and effective. Plus the client could control the temp. I sold the fancy one.

I remember perms well, but was too young for their heyday. Curly hair is awesome. Mine just does wavy in a looking windswept kind of way. It doesn't do groomed. I sometimes attempt to straighten it if I'm trying to look groomed but within an hour it's back to mocking me with its random waves and fly away bits. I wonder if it would defy a perm too.

I had several perms, first one was paired with large roundish glasses = instant Deidre Barlow.
Second one was the age of head bands so looked like Deanna Troi.

I am in the process of growing out my hair for perm......... I have had both good and bad perms but my limp grey thinning look is just horrible so I am embracing the grey but needing volume with a body wave

I loved all my perms! DH wistfully refers to our wedding photos with my short curly hair! Bring 'em back please

Hey professional hairdresser of 19 years here just a warning most hairdressers under the age of 35 most likely have done about 1perm a year usually on short hair and so are very inexperienced when it comes to Preming the other thing most people colour their hair these days combining that with a perm will most likely result in damaged frizzy hair that can only be reversed by growing/cutting it out, I would recommend a semi-permanent perm if your hair is shoulder length or longer before going for the permanent option.
