To take some beer to a job interview?

I have an interview for a new job in a few weeks' time and as part of it I've been asked to do a 10-minute presentation on beer making Grin The job is in healthcare, so absolutely nothing to do with the beer industry!

WIBU to take along a few sample of beer for the interview panel and do a mini blind-tasting session, relating the beers in question to the presentation? Or would that be totally bonkers and look really unprofessional?!

"Today 19:47 Shenanagins

It could also be a test to see if you are aware of their zero tolerance to alcohol."

But how would she know? You can't be expected to know about the internal policies and procedures of a company you don't work for. That would be a stupid and mean test

ImNotReallyReal · 20/02/2017 20:27

They are more likely to be looking for the candidates who google beer presentation and copy it. I sometimes do Lync interviews and can literally hear the candidate googling the answer frantically on a keyboard 😐

What CurlsLDN said is a good idea, take the raw ingredients.

It's really not hard to find out that the NHS has a zero tolerance to alcohol and it's pretty standard in a lot of companies where machinery is involved as well.

ilovesooty · 20/02/2017 20:30

I wouldn't. I'd assume that zero tolerance to alcohol on the premises was the norm.

RoboticSealpup · 20/02/2017 20:39

Don't do it. "Non-alcoholic" beer is not 100% alcohol-free. I have a muslim friend who got really upset one time when she accidentally had some mustard containing a tiny amount of alcohol.

sibys1 · 20/02/2017 20:40

I think taking non-alcoholic beer makes sense. Really weird set up for an interview!

sibys1 · 20/02/2017 20:41

Didn't actually realise that non-alcoholic beer isn't alcohol-free. What a terrible, and potentially discriminatory, basis for an interview.

TheWinterOfOurDiscountTents · 20/02/2017 20:57

If they give you BEER as a topic, and you bring in non-alc beer, and you get into trouble for their being a trace of alcohol in it.....don't worry about it, because there is a pay out there for you. Talk about setting someone up to fail!

RoboticSealpup · 20/02/2017 21:15

I don't think she would get on trouble for there being a trace of alcohol in it, but I do think it could get pretty awkward if someone doesn't drink alcohol.

Thanks for all the replies. I will give it a bit more thought. Clearly the emphasis needs to be on the presentation itself and any 'samples' would be used as a way of demonstrating different production techniques rather than just for amusement or novelty value. Having been on a tour of a brewery recently as part of my research, I've learnt that you can tell quite a bit from a beer just by looking at or sniffing it. If I do go down this route then I think I may present them in this way and if they choose to taste them then that is their decision. I really don't think it would be likely or fair to penalise a candidate for suggesting the panel look at some beer in a presentation on beer!

Not NHS by the way. I have to say that regardless of whether or not I get the job I've really enjoyed planning the presentation. I've learnt loads about something that I was previously rather ignorant about - to the extent that my family are all rather sick of hearing about beer Grin
