To ask for your best 4 night holiday away?

We are going to take the plunge and escape the kids for 3-4 nights away alone this summer. It's too short to go long haul but where can we go from the UK (Belfast unfortunately so even trickier) for an adventure. We are not interested in 5* hotel somewhere warm as a holiday but want something beautiful, educational, interesting. We've done some amazing trips pre-kids so are desperate for some stimulation. Mainly thinking of St Petersburg (DHs choice). I'd love something like New Orleans, somewhere stunning in Iceland, Venice (never been but this is lower on the list), Zanzibar (been before and maybe too beachy for what we're looking for). I've suggested the outer Hebrides but DH rightly says that is actually somewhere we could take the kids in a few years.

Where with 5ish hrs flight have you travelled that has totally blown your mind?

irregular you now have to have your fingerprints taken for a Russian visa so do have to attend in person. It's a pain and very expensive (£108 per person) but I'm hoping it will be worth it. We will have 3 days in Moscow and 5 in St Petersburg (taking the Red Arrow night train between the two) and I'm overwhelmed by the amount of places I want to see in each. Grin

I'm sure you will have a brilliant time Noofly. It was certainly one of my more memorable trips.

We did 3 nights in Dubai. Also done 3-4 nights in New York. Don't rule out further away it can be done! Wherever you end up have a fantastic time.

Dubrovnik, Lake Garda or Sicily. Have fun x

Just to add to GraceGrape, Venice to Milan is also a decent option. We flew into Venice, spent two nights then train to Milan for five nights three years ago. Great connection and easy enough, we did it with the kids and a pushchair!

We're going for 5 days in St. Petersburg! Just getting the flights booked. Visas will be a pain in the ass:(

Ooo that's wonderful op. Somewhere I've always wanted to go. Have a fab time

In no particular order but we absolutely loved these places and wished we'd booked more time there:

Berlin
Amsterdam
Marseille
Nicosia
Athens
Sevilla
Madrid

Fantastic! When you do start the visa process, make sure your hotel invitation has your names exactly as in your passports. Our first hotel (a Hilton so you'd think they would know!) only listed our first and last names on the invitation and so we had a mild panic yesterday when we could only submit DH's application while the others were rejected. Fortunately we were able to get it sorted very quickly via email to the hotel and went back in the afternoon.

When you do go to submit the visa application I'd go first thing in the morning in case there are problems that you can fix that day.

Did 4 nights in Madrid one year, it was fantastic. Had a day trip to barcelona last year while staying in salou and if i got the chance to go away child free i'd go back to barcelona in a flash to see more of it.

moreslackthanslick · 21/02/2017 18:21

Agree Madrid was great too :)

If you go there take a train to Toledo for the day! 30 min journey.

Went to St Petersburg last summer. Totally worth the visa faff. Visit Peterhof on the hydrofoil - stunning place. Cleaner and safer than many European cities too.

Venice is wonderful. Had to pick jaw up from floor on several occasions. Went in May though.

Maybe not quite what you had in mind but we had a lovely midweek, child-free break in Edinburgh a couple of years ago. DH got a good deal at a central hotel via Secret Escapes.

Vienna!

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 21/02/2017 19:54

Fly into Trieste and visit Grado?
Venice
