Shoplifted by accident, should I take it back?

Been on holiday for half term with kids. We went to a shop that is unique (there isn't one near us for about 100 miles). We were looking at some things, and I put something on the buggy (about 10 pounds). I was fully intending to pay for it but then 2 year old DD started to have a tantrum and I had to rush out of the store. It was only when I got back that I emptied the buggy and found that I still had it! I feel incredibly guilty, someone please tell me what to do....Blush

Sallystyle · 19/02/2017 21:08

Then YOU are a thief. I hope you're proud of yourself.

Grin Grin

She accidentally took some oranges. I doubt she will lose any sleep over it and I really hope she is not stupid enough to lose pride in herself over it.

MajesticWhine · 19/02/2017 21:12

I accidentally stole some gloves from a Pound shop (child grabbed them and they fell in they buggy) and I went back later to pay. The member of staff looked amazed. But in this case definitely pay over the phone or by post.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/02/2017 22:18

Briancoxwithbellson If you are double charged at Tesco, they give you the product for free. That is there policy. I had done a similar thing with a hand held cleaner. I was at my car and thought it was pricey. When I checked they had charged me twice. I went back to the shop assisant. She refunded me the amount and the original amount and told me Tesco policy for over charging. I got my cleaner for nothing but it was totally above board.

airlines expect crews to collect in and store away all the items needed to be used on future flights... Would you believe that a fair few passengers actually try to steal the life jackets

I'm sure airlines do Honeyroar. And some people will steal anything, including life-saving equipment.

That's even less of a reason for me to give a stuff about the theft of salt and pepper shakers from business class.

neveradullmoment99 · 19/02/2017 22:18

*their.

honeyroar · 19/02/2017 22:53

Just because you don't care doesn't mean that it's not wrong.

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2017 23:26

Stealing salt and pepper shakers from business class is obviously wrong, but I wouldn't put it up there with the top 10 crimes. Or even top 50, or even...

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 19/02/2017 23:32

neveradullmoment so me thinking the subsequent credit fiasco was all about the universe righting a wrong, this past 8 years, has been way off? Shock

I was aware of that policy, but assumed there was an upper limit!

I now have another free LG telebox, but that was via Sky by signing up in December.

I'm in for a shock the next time I need a tv and have to pay for it! Grin

PussCatTheGoldfish · 19/02/2017 23:33

I've done it. I got a bracelet caught on my DDs buggy in Accessorize. I did take it back.

I was very embarrassed, and the bracelet was really hideous. Double whammy Grin

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 19/02/2017 23:34

If the airline is Virgin Atlantic, they were very lovely little sets - stainless steel, dinky things?

I flew first class to LA and back (got upgrade from business because I knew someone who knew someone) and I won't lie, I did consider slipping a set into my bag Wink

CaraAspen · 19/02/2017 23:34

Some people are wired to do this sort of thing, perhaps. I'm glad I am honest and have never stolen anything ever. Go me.

BrianCoxWithBellsOn · 19/02/2017 23:37

I'm trying to think if I've ever stolen anything. With the exception of a sting of light-fingered lunch box thievery aged 7 (issues at home, played out at school :( ) I don't think I have. DS (nearly 4) is determined to get me banged up, he's always picking stuff up and I'll notice just in time to either pay or return it.

CaraAspen · 19/02/2017 23:37

It would have been stealing in Victorian times, also. rolls eyes

Oh God! CaraAspen. I didn't realise you were spoofing me. I can be so humourless sometimes. blush Great joke. grin

Yawn. It's not only the period that is limited, clearly...

limitedperiodonly · 19/02/2017 23:59

I once stole a standard rose bush from Homebase in 1993. I thought I'd paid for it but on checking my receipt I realised they hadn't charged me. I could have called them but I didn't. So, yes, I stole it.

However, it died and I haven't had the best of luck since then, so I consider us not just even, I wish the God of home improvements would call off the curse.

I always check for the life jackets on aircraft, 50% of the time they are missing

MontePulciana · 20/02/2017 06:06

50% of time? Which airline?

When you make £1200 a month living in the south east and people with £8000 tickets are eating in to your already measly annual bonus you kind of take it seriously.

Sallystyle · 20/02/2017 07:51

Grin limited

I am trying to think of the last time I stole something and can't remember. Except for the time I was about 13 and got caught in woolworths.

Go me! I guess I'm not wired that badly.

Doglikeafox · 20/02/2017 08:04

My mum treated me last year to a spa day at the local centre parcs (2 hour drive). When we were there, I offered to take us to the Pancake house for a meal, but realised I had left my purse in the car and told my mum she would have to pay, but I could pay her back as soon as we got to the car. All fine.
We have a lovely meal, bill was probably about £50. We ask for the bill and then Mum gets up at the end of the meal to go to the toilet. I assumed that she had gotten up to pay the bill, since it appeared that she had taken the receipt with her.
She returns from the loo, we leave the restaurant. We spend the rest of the afternoon wandering around looking at shops, etc etc and when we get back to the car I went to give her the money for the meal except... neither of us had paid. I walked all the way back to the pancake house on my own (a good 20 min walk, can't drive there as we are Day guests) only to find it is now closed.
I intended to pay over the phone when I got home but never got round to it so I suppose that makes me a thief Blush

CaraAspen · 20/02/2017 14:46

Yes.

Some restaurants take unpaid bills out of the wages of the waiting staff. It's not a well paid job to begin with ...

limitedperiodonly · 20/02/2017 19:41

U2 I've never shoplifted or dodged my fare, even when my friends were doing it. My mum told me if I got caught I'd get a criminal record and wouldn't get the job of my dreams.

Ironic really, because I know quite a few people in my job with criminal records and two who've served jail time. But that's by the by. My mum was right. Of course I suppose she should have taught me that stealing is wrong rather than there's no point fucking your life up for little gain. But I don't steal. Apart from that rose bush. And a couple of times when I absentmindedly walked out with loo rolls hanging over my arm. She was with me on all three occasions and didn't urge me to pay back.

I expect she is keeping a seat next to her warm for me in hell.

Really westfox? Next time I'm going to check. I do always pay attention in safety briefings because though I might have heard it many times before, it's polite. I respect airline crew. But then I've never had anyone count the cutlery
