I saw my line manager today who is currently on adoption leave. She's adopted two children, roughly 4 and 2. It's the first time I've seen her since she adopted them.

Anyway, I went over to say hello and to see how she was and commented on how lovely the little girl is(the other child was with her DH elsewhere). She said "yes: this is child 2, child 1 is over there."
Now, is it just me, or would you normally say thanks, this is Sophie/Hannah or whatever the child's name is?

Child 1 and Child 2 aren't the worse names I've heard...

startwig1982 · 18/02/2017 16:47

Well that's true!

She actually referred to them as Child 1 & Child 2? Shock they do not have names?

mailfuckoff · 18/02/2017 16:49

Adopted parents dont day their children's names in public, especially if they are located close by to birth family. My two have nicknames that I use in public unless I really do need to get their attention. I never call out both names together as it's identifying

startwig1982 · 18/02/2017 16:49

She actually called her child 2 and her ds child 1!!

Maybe she hates their names?

Slightlyperturbedowlagain · 18/02/2017 16:51

Bit surprising I guess but maybe her brain is just overwhelmed- it must be lots to deal with all at once. As prospective adoptive parents they will have been thoroughly checked out so should not be a concern?

startwig1982 · 18/02/2017 16:52

Not at all concerned about her suitability, I was just taken aback.

Interesting mail - never considered that.

picklemepopcorn · 18/02/2017 16:55

They may have had the photos and info but not the names, and got into the habit of 'child 1 child 2' during all the adoption malarkey!
I would be careful what you say, there may be major confidentiality issues they are negotiating.

OurBlanche · 18/02/2017 16:55

I came on to say what Mail said. Sounds daft until you think about what might have been their history!

startwig1982 · 18/02/2017 16:57

Have to say I'd not given their history that much thought. I guess when you think of it like that it's less surprising.

Were you invited?

I'd say it was to protect their privacy. You're told to keep things low key, especially with people outside of close family.

NancyDonahue · 18/02/2017 17:17

A bit different but..

A friend of mine has two adopted children. Both adopted at around a year old. She never refers to their names on Facebook or posts photos of them as obviously there is a back story with them and they could be identified. I guess your manager is sort of doing the same thing.

It's also why some parents of adopted children don't want names or photos of them on school website etc
