AIBU to ask about pocket money...

Hi posting for traffic really...
I currently give dd (13) £10 per month and ds (10) £5 per month pocket money.

They have to do jobs (make beds, empty and load dishwasher, sort recycling and laundry and dd brings me tea in bed every morning Wink)
although I've never taken money away for not doing things)

Dd in particular is starting to spread her wings and go shopping with her friends. I tend to buy her essentials (toiletries and clothes included) and she uses her money to buy extras such as more clothes and toiletries!!

Her friends all get about £25 per month and I just want to see what the average is. She hasn't asked for more but I think maybe I'm being a bit tight.

So question is how much do you give your kids as pocket money? Thanks in advance Smile

12 year old currently gets £10 month, plus £7.50 mobile contract plus £15 gym membership (which covers use of the gym plus swimming and other sports at the local leisure centre, most friends also have, so quite useful socially) . Plus we pay for all school lunches, music lessons, all normal clothes/shoes/toiletries/stationary/birthday presents for friends etc. Tend to give extra for days out during the holidays - for more expensive stuff like bowling/cinema etc, but has to pay for her own Costa's, McDs etc if out shopping with friends (but of course could take a pack up/bottle of water from home). Intending to raise to £20 per month, as am noticing a big difference in the amount of ready cash needed since starting yr 7.

DD is 16 and gets £130 a month plus wages from her part time job.

DS1 12 gets nothing regularly. We need to sort something out but he isn't as needy as DD was at this age so it's easier just to give him cash as and when.

6 and 4 year olds get nothing yet either.

DS is 13 & gets £22 per month. Dd is 15 & gets £26.50 per month. I also pay for their phones at £7.50 per month each.

I was searching for reccomended pocket money rates a while back & came across this table of rates for children in care which I thoaught gave an indication of what is reasonable for each age.

I strongly believe that children should be able to use pocket money to start learning budgeting skills before it really matters.

Mine all keep accounts. Money paid into bank account and they have a credit card.

In the notebook they write in
start of month total
Each transaction
New total
End of month total (thats carried over into start of month)
Cross referenced with bank statement to check for accuracy and hidden charges.

They are meant to keep receipts but that's been less successful.

I keep the credit cards so they don't get lost. They ask for them as and when.
