To tell our European friends to all vote for us in the Eurovision Song Contest?

I hope everyone in Europe votes for the UK to win. Wouldn't it be hilarious if the UK had to host it in 2018 when Brexit was fully underway and we had to be nice to all the Europeans travelling over to watch it?

This isn't Remoaning. This is irony.

So do we actually think that any of our recent entries have been any good? Maybe we keep losing because we send crap artists with crap songs?

VanillaSugar · 15/02/2017 15:36

The last time we were in the left part of the leader board was when Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the song. This year's son is so bad. The trend is for dance/trance music with a sophisticated CGI floorshow.

You'd think the UK producers deliberately want us to lose Hmm taps nose and runs chin thoughtfully

the Eurovision lot (not the same as the EU) have hated us for a decade or so now, although our songs and singers are usually terrible even by the standards of the contest.

good. Saves having to host the thing.

alpacawhacker · 15/02/2017 16:59

Eurovision is so far off my radar that every year I find myself surprised all over again that it's still staggering on. Surely it's time it was put out of it's misery?? I don't know... I suppose someone must like it though.

Grilledaubergines · 15/02/2017 17:02

No one voted for us pre referendum, so it'll make no difference.

We are nice to Europeans. Surely to God anyone with an ounce of sense doesn't believe that all guff.

Over 200 million people tuned in to watch the final last year. The rest of Europe love it. It's only the Brits who sneer at it.

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2017 17:55

We love Eurovision in Aus. I'd be gutted if it ended. It does seem to be a case of sour grapes with the UK. Other countries seem happy enough to give it a go even though they don't have a chance of winning.

ArchNotImpudent · 15/02/2017 18:05

The UK's automatic entry does it no favours in the final contest - most of the other songs will have been through the semi finals, so will have had an earlier airing and the chance to grow on voters.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 15/02/2017 18:05

Eurovision is just a bit of fun. Only in Britain in becomes this tense competition about national identity and paranoid arrogance.

The UK is so culturally isolated in Europe that people just cannot fathom that other countries could have cultural or ethnic links... years ago a Russian guy won singing for Norway. You might have a Swiss person singing in French, a French contestant of Moroccan origin, a Belgian song written by a popular Dutch singer, a Latvian contestant who is ethnically Russian and using instruments or tunes well known in the Baltic etc. So people from several countries can relate to a song.

But in Britain it's another opportunity to engage in "them-against-us". Only in the UK would people connect Eurovision and Brexit. Hmm

The idea that someone singing in a European language could have a number 1 in Britain is so unlikely as to be laughable. And yet it happens all the time in other countries. I wish we'd send someone singing in Welsh... now that would be different and definitely more interesting than the usual songs which are all "thin woman with long hair wailing in English".

Ireland did give yiz votes last year. I loved that 1920s song. Charlton thingy. How many years ago was that!? Loved it. ##

Ireland entered a turkey one year. Literally. Dustin. Nobody got it. It was a Turkey.

Let's just get our rainmacs and go home! let the Russians and their neighbours get on with it.

EighthElement · 15/02/2017 18:08

I agree, that would be really fresh, a UK entry sung in Welsh or Scots Gaelic.

Sunnymeg · 15/02/2017 18:14

Apparently Ukraine TV is in meltdown about the organisation of the contest and everything is massively behind schedule. They wanted to move the contest to later in the year, but have been told it has to be in May, even though it seems impossible that everything will be ready by then. . So there may not even be a contest the way things are going.

VanillaSugar · 15/02/2017 20:00

Harrogate can host it!!

SuperBeagle · 15/02/2017 20:04

Should've been Australia.............

Olympiathequeen · 15/02/2017 20:07

Haha! This year we will definitely get null points. Even Adele singing would get null points.

I am going to pmsl at the whole farce

Well ok, fair enough then! I'm not sneering at it really though, I just don't find it relevant personally and had no idea so many people do. Like I said, just way off my radar. shrugs
