To think a 37minute school run is ok?

We are house hunting and I have found two houses I like with a 37min walking distance to the school we want. One of the things I was really looking forward too with the move was to be able to walk the kids to school instead of driving like I have to do now. But is 37 minutes too long to walk twice a day? Am I just going to end up driving?
If iabu how long is the longest walking distance you would consider doing?

Far too much, IMO.

My daily walk to school is about that. 30 mins on my own. 40 with DD.

I don't drive so had no choice. Our walk was 30 mins which was fine on a nice day and bloody awful in winter but if you have a car to fall back on then 37 mins is doable. I walk a lot and love it. As for the kids - by the time they get to school they are wide awake and ready to learn. DD has a 40 min walk to secondary school and she could ge the bus but prefers to walk - I guess old habits die hard.

DS's school was 1.5 miles. No direct buses so we walked most days. A good part was through a park so a pleasure with changing seasons. Most of the children walking the same route used scooters which speeded up the journey ( preferred over bikes probably because they were easier to handle)
There were occasions when I resorted to the car, the blasted trombone, wet days etc

There's no doubt DS and others benefited from the morning walk

We were 45 min walk from infants school. I only ever walked it once. 1h 30min round trip no thank you.

I used to walk 25 mins to DD's infant school and found it a hassle - would be perfectly happy doing it by myself but small children can be so. slow. And whingey. And slow. Especially if there are hills to go up. I suspect you'll walk to start with, and on particularly lovely days, but you'll end up driving quite often for the sake of a quiet life.

1.2 miles is fine. We used to do that and it was just a nice way to start the day. Plus, it gave loads of time to practice spellings.

I walk about a mile with my DC to school. Takes about 20 mins. I think it's a really good start to the day. We chat, play games and I'll really miss it when it's gone.

I do 30 mins but sometimes kids are slow and it's 40 -so long as you leave in good time so its not you stressed and dragging them up the hill then its fine, pop your fitbit on and go for it! Could kids do it on scooters? most schools have scooter bays now.

holidaysaregreat · 17/02/2017 08:04

I would say scooters or bikes would work best

My 12 year old DD walks to her school about 5 minutes away but sometimes she's so loaded with bags I drop her off and after a tough afternoon of games she very occasionally asks me to collect her - even though I could probably walk there as fast as I could drive!!
She's very sporty and fit and not lazyband we have a dog so she's used to walking but after a long day with 2 or 3 heavy bags even a short walk is too much to face
Bear in mind that 3 kids is a lot of bags to carry!!
