To be really frightened and want a doctor :(

My 23 month old was seen out of hours a week on Sunday ago with a 39.9 temp. Turned out to be tonsillitis, penicillin prescribed.

80 hours later temp still needing calpol and nurofen to stay under control. Minimal fluid and almost no food going in. Also having flu symptoms (didn't before) plus diarrhoea. Gp reviews and switches to arythromicin (Thursday). Huge improvement, eating small amounts and having a little energy back.

Roll on today, as of 5 pm, projectile vomiting starts out of nowhere. Advised to stop new antibiotics as infection is probably gone. Six times since 5 pm.

He struggles to gain weight normally and through illness in one week has lost the pound it took nearly three months to gain. He's visibly skinny all over and dribbling lots.

He's seen out of hours earlier and I keep getting the paranoid parent look. I'm really not he's barely seen a doctor since he was born, plus I have lots on at work. I'm just frightened my baby is so ill :(

Sorry for the slow response. Seen gp and been given one day to see improvement. All medicines now out of his system. Had loads of advice on building his sugar/hydration up. He's not stopped eating or drinking all day so I'm really hopeful we've turned a corner. No vomit since 3 a.m. Thank you all for the advice. I think a lot of it I'll write down for the paediatrician in March.

I'm watching closely though because he briefly improved Friday then got ill again.

Fingers crossed OP that he has turned the corner and that you have a better night. Flowers

BakeOffBiscuits · 14/02/2017 17:39

So glad to see your update- hope he continues to improve well

sluj · 14/02/2017 17:42

Just a quick post to say that particular antibiotic caused vomiting in my little one so it could just be a reaction. Hope all goes well

HackAttack · 14/02/2017 17:48

Thank you all, reading all the advice and experience made last night less scary and isolated

Good news hack fingers firmly crossed that he picks up from here.

My dd had pneumonia over the Christmas holiday and we were in hospital for four days and I was fucking terrified so I understand that feeling well.

I also know that when they do turn the corner it can be really quick so here's hoping!!

JoandMax · 15/02/2017 04:16

Hope he continues to do well and is back to normal soon xx

AwaywiththePixies27 · 15/02/2017 07:54

Always best to double check OP. We had an old GP tell us DS 'only had a virus'. When we got home from the appointment and he promptly chundered all over the kitchen I had no reason to believe otherwise. Until I got speaking to the pharmacist the next day whilst getting him more Calpol and the pharmacist insisting I took him down to A&E as vomiting can indicate a temp too. When we got there it was bacterial tonsillitis and his temp and heart rate were through the roof. The GP never even thought to check his throat or chest. Sad so they do get it wrong sometimes. So in a nutshell, never be frightened to look like one of those paranoid parents, follow your instincts, they're there for a reason. DS was fine in the end - back to his normal hyperactive self a few days later like nothing had ever happened.

Also, both my DCs can't have erothymycin, I don't know what it is in it but they both make my DCs projectile vomit violently everywhere so it could be a reaction to that too.

Glad to hear he's improving and hope he continues to Smile Flowers

GlitteryFluff · 15/02/2017 07:59

Hope he's still doing well.

reiki73 · 15/02/2017 17:44

Just get to A&E and get him properly checked out. I know it's difficult when you start worrying, but you need to just go to hospital with him and get him looked at.

littlestlily · 15/02/2017 17:49

How is he now?
I totally agree with going with your gut instinct, you sound like a very level headed Mum, if you feel something's not right get him seen again xx

Kerala2712 · 15/02/2017 18:02

I work in a children's A+E - nobody minds if you come in the night with a poorly child. We'd rather you came with a child who turned out ok than stayed away with a child who's really sick. Not so keen on drivel from adults, but kids is fine!

Photomummy16 · 15/02/2017 18:10

We had something similar - I'm just repeating what others have said but yes trust your instincts and just keep going back to the GP.
We ended up going in four days in a row before the last one finally took 'parental concern' into account and sent us to hospital - where we stayed for three days! It's a tough job being a GP so sometimes you just have to keep pushing on.

Deidre21 · 15/02/2017 18:13

This might not help the current illness he is having but with regards to not gaining weight, you should look into the possibility that he could suffer from Coeliac disease? Im not trying to add more worry to you as at times like this you find yourself racking your brain over and over. However, a friend of ours had problems with her little boy gaining weight and that turned out to be the cause. She had quite bad heartburn whilst pregnant with him and then after his birth he has quite bad reflux as a baby but all the while even now despite them diagnosing him with Coeliac disease the weight gain is slow but at least they are aware of this. I hope your little one gets better and I know what you mean about being looked at as though you're paranoid especially when visits to doctors/hospitals were not part of your normal routine.

Shona52 · 15/02/2017 18:58

Please get a doctor (ours were great they always said they would rather be in the safe side and have their time wasted then miss something) your instincts as a mother will guide you if you think you need the doctor get them x

greeneyedlulu · 15/02/2017 19:02

Get in the car and take to him to a and e!! You know your baby and you know when things aren't right! My boy had a fit round my mums and, being on the way home from work, I had to meet them at the hospital! The next day the nurses and doctors said he was fine to go home and l said no he's not..... he had another fit that night and we stayed in hospital for a further night as they then wanted to keep him in as a 'precaution'!! You know your baby don't be fobbed off!!

HackAttack · 15/02/2017 19:57

He's so much better still, eating really well so hopefully be gaining a little back. Had a big bowl of chilli, rice and cheese for dinner today.

Its a couple of weeks away but I can feedback after his paeds appointment.

Brilliant that he's improving Thanks

LizzyELane · 15/02/2017 20:24

Take him to A&E. Whatever the original illness is, dehydration can be dangerous, particularly for little ones. I've worked in paediatrics and a drip plus IV antibiotics I think is what's needed.

Bettyspants · 15/02/2017 22:38

Glad to see he's much better! Unfortunately infections can take a while to properly recover from with children being vulnerable to picking up viruses on top of bacterial infections. If your worried again don't feel unreasonable about asking for a review, as someone posted previously we are very happy (despite what some people think) to review children

bluebell34567 · 15/02/2017 22:45

my dc at that age had illnesses like that for a couple of months, gp couldn't find what happened, then her back teeth came out and she was fine.

NaomiCole · 15/02/2017 22:48

I can really empathise with your fears with him not putting weight on and not having the back up to be this poorly. I'd also echo the suggestion of coeliac disease..... bare with me, I'll post a picture of my daughter at 8 months old (just finding it...)

NaomiCole · 15/02/2017 22:56

This is Mathilda at eight months. She was diagnosed with coeliac disease at a year and a half. She's now a petite but chubby ish four year old. When she was ill as a baby I was always scared. She didn't have any physical reserves to fall back on. I hope he's ok. Xxxxx
