Why? Why do people say they'll have a "slither" of cake/pie? It's "sliver". It annoys me unreasonably Smile

Expresso instead of espresso, but the worst ever is when people say "what one?" Instead of "which one?". Don't know why but really makes me cringe. My DP hates when I say "off of" 😂

RhodaBorrocks · 18/02/2017 00:19

"Low and behold!"

Really winds me up. Lo. It's Lo.

And for that matter "Viola!" Instead of voila.

The shortening of et cetera to ect instead of etc gets to me too. One is the first three letters, the other is a painful and brutal form of MH treatment.

happy2bhomely · 18/02/2017 00:33

Aargh! I've just realised that I've referred to maths practise instead of maths practice in my email to the home education officer this morning. FFS.

CaraAspen · 18/02/2017 02:02

TUT!!!!

ToutesDirections · 18/02/2017 07:30

EKcetera. It's eT cetera FFS.

BasLamic vinegar. No. No it isn't.

Brexit is exit with a br, not egg-zitit with a br grin

Brexitit? Is that a tit who voted to leave?

Fink, I can't remember IPA, but google provided this page, www.dictionary.com/browse/exit
which suggests that both eg-zit and ek-sit are acceptable variations of the word "exit", so "Bregzit" is not the atrocity some might imagine.

I've just repeated both words: I say "Breksit" but "egzit". Confused

lanbro · 18/02/2017 17:36

I say Wed-ens-day...North east, pretty sure that's how we all pronounce it up here!

Dh say 'realliterate' instead of 'reiterate'...He says many words incorrectly but it's just one of his many quirks!

Personally hate 'a' instead of 'I', mainly seen on fb posts/texts by youngsters, and 'I done' instead of 'I did'

lanbro · 18/02/2017 17:38

And 'on route' instead of 'en route', 'click' instead of 'clique' and more I'm sure

SundialShadow · 18/02/2017 17:42

" SundialShadow

Surely the right word is sliver......"
I believe that is the point of the thread

Milliepede · 18/02/2017 22:33

@ Srappy, that's one of mine as well. Also I have noticed the American "normalcy" increasing in use over here. Fucking normalcy, it's not even a proper word, it's NORMALITY!

Kirsty Allsopp pronounces create as crate. I bloody hate it, crating all this craft stuff like she's going to shift it about on a forklift.

CaraAspen · 19/02/2017 13:15

Bet she wouldn't spell the word wrongly, though.

sk1pper · 19/02/2017 13:20

I hate it when people say "Pacific" instead of "specific". Urgh, normally I correct people by saying "Could you be more specific?" and they look at me like I've just dribbled down my shirt.

CaraAspen · 19/02/2017 14:42

Why don't they get that "To be Pacific..." makes no sense at all?? Jeez. What does one of the planet's oceans have to do with them making a particular point?

anxious2017 · 20/02/2017 11:10

Methinks sundialshadow has misunderstood this thread 😉

Ooh yes en route and people seem to use on point ALL the time now. It's en pointe!

I have a friend who says gree like Brie for Gruyere cheese.
