OK I KNOW this is AIBU but I don't care. If I post in an appropriate section, I'll have to wait days for any replies.

What's on or near your fireplace? If you have one that is...we've recently moved and I now have two fireplaces having never had one before.

One works and one doesn't. The working one is a combustion thing...with a door, quite rustic looking with an old, painted mantlepiece and no surround...the other, the non-working one is an arched shape...white stone wall, flat hearth of stone and again, a painted white wooden mantelpiece quite high above it.

I've just got some paintings propped on both mantles at the moment and some candles in the non working one.

Both areas look blank. It's summer in oz where I am so there's no lovely basket of logs beside the working one yet...what can I do to make them look nice?

Mid century frameless mirror above, antique clock and candlesticks on the mantle itself, photo frames and tea light holders on the tiles.
In the dining room we have a clock on the wall and photo frames on the mantle.

I have a large mirror above my fireplace. Photos of dds on mantel piece. On hearth I have a couple of candles on big wooden candle sticks, another photo of dds and niece and a black companion set.

Downstairs we have a large overmantle mirror, used to have nice old bronze statuettes and some ornamental figurines and a cactus until DD got tall enough to reach them... It is now sadly bare.
Upstairs in our room a lovely gilt framed painting of a woodland scene, and a set of glass scent bottles.
In DD's room, a painting of a magical looking castle, and no ornaments since she learnt to climb on her toy chest and scoop things off the mantelpiece... We used to have an ornamental dollhouse and Russian dolls.

In the craft room, shelves above the fireplace holding some vital crafty resources, and on the mantelpiece ... Erm, a scattering of random ribbons and things that really don't belong there!

I would like one of those terrible marble/alabaster clock things though....you see a lot of them on daytime antiquey progs

This sort of thing, but uglier

Anarchykitty I love your fireplace such a lovely shape.

I have clients with a really gorgeous and unusual 60's fireplace which I'm trying to get them to refurbish and use rather than rip out but I think it's a bit of a labour of love.

Oh this thread takes me back to good old uni days! A girl I knew did her PhD on what people put on their mantelpieces and what it says about life...and yes, she actually got funding for this! Found an article of hers if anyone is at all interested...

@wonkylegs
We found a 1920s art deco light fitting in the barn too that complements it perfectly.
The black edging round the fireplace has actually got tiny stars inside it.

We have an old clock that I got off eBay - my husband calls it haunted because it doesn't work properly but I just call it good looking junk so its staying even though it doesn't tell the time unless it faces the wall. We also have 2 lanterns with led candles. On the hearth there is a vase with flowers (artificial but they look good). Still to put up above the mantle is a mirror about the same width as the fireplace.
