To think I could walk to work and back in nicer weather?

New job is, according to Google maps, 2.3 miles away and the estimated walking time is 53mins.

It's a nice walk there, downhill to the riverside then along and up a little at the end. Obviously the walk home would be harder!

Anyone walk a distance like this?

Nb am hideously bad at cycling so that's a no go!

"Weather in the UK is bad,
it really isn't."

Doesn't it depend on where you live?

"Skerry are you answering the phone and helping teenage boys? Grin"

I thought that as well Grin. Skerry is being rather cagey about her income. I wonder if an HD webcam is involved.

"I prefer to choose the people I mix with rather than have them forced upon me."

I actually like the people I work with and for. I like being out of the house and I love our canteen - the food is great.

SuperFlyHigh · 13/02/2017 08:55

I'd do it and in fact in nicer weather I did do part of this walk (really steep hills though!). Mine was about 1 hour 5-10 minutes though.

I would say ensure there's a bus if you want to split it up or if you don't want to walk one day.

Also, I know this sounds silly but trainers, walking shoes etc are key.

SuperFlyHigh · 13/02/2017 09:02

Ignore silly skerry OP!

I don't notice people walking to work every day (why would you?!) but I see tons of people cycling or train and cycle. They don't turn up to work a dripping mess.

When it rains just dress accordingly. The weather in this country eg rain is nowhere as near as bad as skerry is making out.

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:05

I reckon after a few goes you'l do it in 45 mins. I walk a mile in under 20. Why not start by walking one way and bus the other?

limitedperiodonly · 13/02/2017 09:07

I sometimes work at home and sometimes in an office. Not only is my work high-powered and lucrative, I consider it to be a humanitarian act.

I walk to and from the office. According to Google maps it's 1.9 miles but it's less than that because they go all round the houses. It takes about 40 minutes, but I am a lazy toad. Someone with a more determined approach to maximising the efficiency of their time could do it much quicker and multitask by learning Mandarin through their headphones on the way which could lead to another income stream.

Go for it OP.

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:08

It really doesn't rain that often in the UK. Since owning a dog 8 months ago, I can count on one hand the amount of rainy walks we've done and she is walked twice a day.

Cindbelly · 13/02/2017 09:09

For similar reasons to you op, I walk to school with the DC every day (30mins but that's mainly due to my 4yr olds pace) then 40 mins walk to work after I've dropped them off. Have been doing it for about 2 months.
I found that the idea of doing it was actually more daunting than the walk itself.

DH picks me up after work so I only do the mornings.
I have found that even with the morning walks I still need to go out for 30 mins on my lunch to get 10000 steps (office job) so op I would say get some decent walking shoes and a pedometer, you will love it. we are buying another car soon and I still plan to walk 3 days out of 5 when we do

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 09:11

In my area it rains on average 220 days a year.

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:12

OP so long as your feet are comfortable, there really is nothing stopping you. I love walking and would love to walk to work but too far. The dog walks make up for it.

stevie69 · 13/02/2017 09:12

Yes, I walk around 2 miles to work (and back) every day. All year. It's lovely Smile

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:13

Wow skerry, you in Ireland or Manchester?

WellTidy · 13/02/2017 09:14

You could mix it up.

My commute to work involves:
7 minute walk to station
First train ride of 3 (yes three) minutes)
Change trains and then have 25 minute train ride
Get off train and walk 15-20 minutes

and obviously the reverse to come home.

The three minute train ride works out at a 20 minute walk. Sometimes, when I come home, I miss my connection so I do the 25 minute train ride and then would have a 20 minute wait for the train ride that would take 3 minutes. So I walk instead. I can be home in 30 minutes if I walk, which is pretty much the same as the 20 minute wait + 3 minute journey + 7 minute walk.

I like the walk even though its a main road that I am walking next to. I like having that exercise at the end of the day.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 13/02/2017 09:15

What do you write skerry? What do you sell? DH is looking for work at the moment.

MumW · 13/02/2017 09:15

Absolutely doable. DDs walk to school - google maps says 2.2 miles, 45 mins.

user1478860582 · 13/02/2017 09:15

That's why you don,t walk then Skerry. You obviously live on Noah's Ark. I imagine time is tight feeding and cleaning all those animals!

lilybetsy · 13/02/2017 09:17

I think, if you can do it, it would be brilliant for your health both physical and mental. Only you know if spending the time walking is feasible though. I just could not as a single mum, have to get kids out before / so I can leave and leaving at 7 to walk to work would mean they were fending for themselves!

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:22

OP I second the mental health thing almost above physical. I walk 45/60 mins briskly every day with fast walking must and I love it. I go into a trance and it really lifts my mood. I get a bit twitchy if I don't do it and it means I don't feel too guilty if I want to sit in front of the TV.

Giddyaunt18 · 13/02/2017 09:22

mutt not must!

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 09:24

Wheresthattomoibabber I make and sell craft items. I write commercial stuff, have good links with local economic development agency .

Foldedtshirt · 13/02/2017 09:25

This is an inspiring thread. It takes me 15 minutes to drive the 2 miles to work but then another 10 to park up and walk in. Home usually takes 40 minutes- more traffic and one way system. I've walked it occasionally, I'm going to try it both ways tomorrow.

unlucky83 · 13/02/2017 09:26

I mainly work from home but I have to go in to work once or twice a week and it is a 10 min walk away. I got into the habit of driving when I had a bad back, then a sore leg and also I usually have quite a bit to carry...and I am often running late... so I totally understand someone driving a 10 min walk to work...
I have been trying to get back into the habit of walking - so getting organised to leave earlier and when I can I do. That's when I haven't got something really heavy to carry. Or if it is raining really heavily - I will have papers and often a laptop with me ...I don't mind me getting wet but can't risk those getting wet...
I feel so much better for it - even to the point that I found when I got home I was just getting into my stride and was ready to carry on - and now often go on a detour- a longer and longer way back.
I even thought about getting a dog to give me an excuse to go for a walk...

Rainatnight · 13/02/2017 09:27

Go for it! Or you could do it a few days a week.

DP used to do this, absolutely loved it. Great start to the day. (Got Tube back though! Smile)

Dagnabit · 13/02/2017 09:31

Skerry - come on, time is money and you've wasted about an hour on your OP's thread this morning and you could have earned £200 in that time selling on eBay/selling Forever Living products

OP, the walk is definitely doable if you can factor in the time and sounds much better than the two bus route. I need my car, despite it being a 10 minute drive to work because I have to go out and about to appointments all day but enjoy walking.

Cindbelly · 13/02/2017 09:34

For those worried about timings with DC I have found the school breakfast club a godsend.
Both get up earlier with me, eat breakfast at home, have time to play they wouldn't have had that time before as we weren't getting up early enough then walk to school and have 20 mins or so to play with friends at breakfast club before school starts.
I'm going to bed earlier as well due to the early starts and drinking water on the walk so now my skin looks better from actually getting 8 hours sleep every night and drinking the water, which was an added bonus I hadn't anticipated

Devilishpyjamas · 13/02/2017 09:43

I earn money from home, my son goes to lots of dance classes & he walks 40 minutes to school (all the above us true).

Yes OP walk it - walking is a great way to wake up/unwind at the end of the day. So much better than driving. If you're not in the mood on a particular day then bus part of the way.

If it rains you can use this amazing thing called a raincoat or an umbrella. You won't melt in the rain. The only place I have been laughed at for wearing a raincoat to work was in Japan, but they cycle holding umbrellas there so I rest my case.
