To think I could walk to work and back in nicer weather?

New job is, according to Google maps, 2.3 miles away and the estimated walking time is 53mins.

It's a nice walk there, downhill to the riverside then along and up a little at the end. Obviously the walk home would be harder!

Anyone walk a distance like this?

Nb am hideously bad at cycling so that's a no go!

Sounds iike a lovely scenic walk, OP. I envy you! You'll get hooked on endorphins and won't want to stop.

Suggest you read David Sedaris's brilliant story for The New Yorker about how he got batshit- insanely addicted to walking. Sorry, I am crap with links, but google Sedaris and Fitbit for your ambulatory inspiration.

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 07:25

Wheresthattomoibabber keeps me fit- I don't need it to keep me sane,

omnishamblesssssssssssssss · 13/02/2017 07:26

I bet you could get there in 40 mins. Realistically. Back home might be 45 mins depending on the hill.

I would do it because 5 miles is 10000 steps and the minimal amount a women needs to do daily. You could increase your fitness hugely. A huge percentage of women are sedate and long term this will cause health issues.

Maybe add some yoga or Pilates for flexibility to contrast

starting a day with a walk will be refreshing, centring and stress busting. Waking in light rain is actually quite refreshing and cleansing somehow.

Get a pedometer of some sort for fun.

Put the saved cash to one side. Save for something

I do see the point about being lucky to be able to spare the time because that was my first thought. But it doesn't apply to the OP. She's not talking about 15 minute drive (by the time you've parked etc) vs 45 minute walk - she's thinking about 45 minute walk vs 45 minute bus ride on her car free days which is a no brainer.

Oysterbabe · 13/02/2017 07:31

I walk about that to work and back. It's barely any faster taking the bus during rush hour and I enjoy it.

Wheresthattomoibabber · 13/02/2017 07:31

I envy you, Skerrywind! Sounds like a good life.

user1478860582 · 13/02/2017 07:31

Set yourself a target by summer to get that down to 30mins each day. Spend a few quid on decent walking shoes and you'll love it!

Also it's coming up to spring. You'll start to see the changes in the river each day. And if the walking bug bites, look at joining the Long Distance Walkers Association.

Oysterbabe · 13/02/2017 07:33

(I stick on headphones and enjoy some music. With a job and a baby it's about the only time I get to myself)

blueskyinmarch · 13/02/2017 07:34

2.3miles shouldn't take you as long as that if you walk briskly. Sounds like a great way to get exercise into your day. I do a minimum of 5 miles every day as I have a dog that needs walked. It isn't at all onerous.

Definitely at least try otherwise you'll never know how much you like it. As pp have said, dress appropriately with good footwear for walking and enjoy seeing the changes in the seasons each day. I used to love this when I walked my dogs for an hour each morning before work (well as soon as it was light enough not to have to use a torch Shock

RedBugMug · 13/02/2017 07:36

do it! sounds like it's a pleasant walk as well.
you will get fitter and therefore quicker.
invest in good shoes, backpack and raingear, small torch and rape alarm.

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 07:38

rape alarm

Serioulsy?

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 07:38

Seriously.

Casschops · 13/02/2017 07:42

I walk three miles to work and back each day. It's very doable, average to brisk walking speed it shouldn't take you that long. Have funGrin

cuphat · 13/02/2017 07:43

I walked 45 minutes each way briskly for years for my first job. In all weathers - I never once got the bus. We didn't have a car so walked everywhere and I never thought anything of it. It wasn't a scenic walk but I still enjoyed it.

EmpressOfTheSpartacusOceans · 13/02/2017 07:45

You seem unimpressed by the whole idea, Skerry. Just because your OH could cut his commute doesn't mean most people can.

skerrywind · 13/02/2017 07:47

Well many of us don't have the luxury of dictating where we work, skerry

I choose not to go out to work- that's not a luxury, it's a choice.

Gooseysgirl · 13/02/2017 07:47

Totally agree with PPs, no way it should take 53 mins! I would do that in about 35 mins tops (and I have short legs 😄) I have a 75 mins commute that involves a combo of walking, bus and tube. DH drops kids on his way to work, I pick them up so it's doable. But I would LOVE a 35 min walk to work, do it 😊

DialsMavis · 13/02/2017 07:47

My walk to work is 1.6miles or 2 miles if I am dropping off or picking up DD, I allow 30 mins from home and it is lovely.

The bus would either take 10 mins or 25 anyway depending on the traffic and is gross. Driving wouldn't save that much time and would add to the awful traffic & parking would be £7 per day.

I link my steps to my fitness pal and enjoy the extra calories burned.

NorksAreMessy · 13/02/2017 07:49

Yes! Of course you can do it and you will be energised for the whole day (but might be hungry when you get to work!)

Key thing is comfortable SHOES.

I am deeply jealous as I live in a field and have to take the car EVERYWHERE

enfru · 13/02/2017 07:49

I walk just over 3 miles to work and I love it, my walk is also along a river and it's so calm.
I would love to walk home too and manage it occasionally but have 2 kids to get home to and ex-h won't watch them long enough for me to do it.

Given your alternative is 45 minutes and buses I think walking is the much better alternative, not too sure why some people are so against it!

moomoogalicious · 13/02/2017 07:49

My teens walk 2 miles to school every day. Takes them about 35/40 minutes

AmaDablam · 13/02/2017 07:56

Yes, absolutely, I'd walk it. When I lived and worked in the same city I used to walk this sort of distance 2 or 3 times a week. I couldn't do it every day as I often needed the car during my working day, but on days I didn't, I always made a point of walking, whatever the weather. Used to take me about 40 minutes. I really enjoyed that walk and found it very easy to keep weight off at the time, despite not doing any other form of regular exercise.

DevelopingDetritus · 13/02/2017 07:58

Definitely give it a go OP. I'd say that'd take you around 40 mins at tops.
I didn't realise I walked as far there and back to work as I do, I've just checked, 2.5 miles each way. That's my exercise, clears my head, it's good for the soul!
Go for it, lets us know how you get on.
Oh, it takes a bit to get used to if you don't do much walking at all, don't give up though, it gets easier.
