can't go to work tomorrow

Because I can't see!

HAD two pairs of glasses and a new puppy....

Left my glasses in a place puppy could reach, he ate them.my stupid fault. Been wearing my second pair. Left them in a place I know puppy can't reach. Cat (who had been a bit stressed after puppy, but settling now) knocked them off high place, puppy ate them.

I can't see distance, so can't drive, would take me two hours to get to work tomorrow on public transport. Which doesn't fit with DS nursery hours. Only other way is to get a taxi (£25 each way)

Can borrow DPa glasses, as we have similar prescriptions, but pretty sure It wouldnt be legal to drive wearing them as they are not my prescription.

I have a laptop so can work from home, but had time off sick last week (genuine flue bug, hallucinating with fever etc).

What I want to do is wfh tomorrow, go to the local village opticians (I am due an eye test in 3 months so might as well get that done) and hopefully get some glasses ordered and expedited. And then do the taxi/long commute on public transport thing in the hopefully 3 days it will take to prepare my new glasses!

DP doesn't drive, I am also self employed (IT contractor) so reputation is key, please tell me I can take a guilt free day off working from home tomorrow, and my client isn't going to think I am flaky!

NorksAreMessy · 13/02/2017 07:52

Amazon will do super cheap instant glasses on Prime.
And yes, sorry, that looks VERY flakey as an excuse. :(

LIZS · 13/02/2017 07:58

If you normally drive why cant't you transfer dc carseat to taxi?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 13/02/2017 08:02

Just wear your DPs glasses! You really can't have a day off for this.

notquiteruralbliss · 13/02/2017 08:05

What tattycat said. You aren't an employee. Where I work the IT contractors have to work from home one day a week and can work from home as / when they want to. They are professionals and paid to do a job not to be in the office.

Meffy · 13/02/2017 08:08

You need to find an optician who will test and provide glasses today !

You cannot drive nor work if you can't see... ignore other people who say you can... they are obviously not blind snout to understand.
I can't do anything without my 👓.... I would be rendered disabled and I could absolutely not do Anything safely.
Sort out you're glasses!
Ps if it's a black cab your daughter won't need a car seat!

AllPowerfulLizardPerson · 13/02/2017 08:30

A cheap pair on your current prescription, even with an express service, will probably cost you less than your potential outlay on taxis.

And will also save damage to your reputation.

forfucksakenet · 13/02/2017 08:30

Is it not legal to not put dc in car seat for a taxi journey?

Almostthere15 · 13/02/2017 08:31

Just to be clear I would absolutely not advocate driving without your glasses, and I haven't seen anyone do so. If getting lo to nursery is impossible without a child seat then can dh take parental leave for the day and take your prescription to tesco/asda who will do an hour service for v cheaply as a backup pair while you get a cab to work?

SuperFlyHigh · 13/02/2017 08:34

Agreed with geek just take the time to go to opticians then get a taxi to work.

It does look flakey the excuse of the puppy too.

BornStroppy · 13/02/2017 08:35

Get the taxi and stop being a tightarse!
But how can you work at all if you can't even drive?(Genuine qn)

MDFalco · 13/02/2017 08:41

Not quite the same thing, but I had to take a day of work because I lost my glasses and literally couldn't see to find my spares. I had to make a trip to an express dispensing optometrist and then another trip to get the prescription dispensed as I have an uncommon prescription.

I had no compunction taking the day off work to do so, and work didn't have any trouble with me doing so (if they did, they didn't tell me), because I can't function without my glasses. It taught me a lesson. I now keep an old pair in a place that can find the without having to look - glove box of car, which is handy if I break them when I'm out of the house.

Mrsgandyb · 13/02/2017 08:55

My son can't see without his . His optician fashioned him a pair using his lenses and a spare pair in the shop until his new Ones arrived. I leave spares in work for myself and have spare distance in car . I would be lost . I would go sort it now and then get into work for rest of the day .

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 13/02/2017 08:58

Worst case scenario, can't you just get a pair of contacts fitted ASAP this am?

I am very blind. I have a spare box of contacts split and hidden in two separate rooms and two older pairs of glasses secreted about as well as my usual pair beside my bed in a case. I don't think that's OTT. Most people I know with crap sight are the same - really worried about a fire or emergency in the middle of the night and not being able to see/drive properly. I am a SAHM now but also had spare contacts and an old pair of glasses at work too

If I was your client, I'd be expecting you to have similar arrangements in place. So I would get three new pairs of specs - one just needs to be cheap - and put that pair somewhere safe. I would also consider being fitted with contacts for emergencies

Bubblysqueak · 13/02/2017 09:04

Specsavers do a 1 your service is there be near you?

PurpleDaisies · 13/02/2017 09:06

gobbolin I'm the same-I'm very short sighted and there's no way I could cope without a pair of glasses. I keep a spare pair in my car, plus a couple of others in the house.

What did ou end up doing op?

Caterina99 · 13/02/2017 15:27

Do you have prescription sunglasses? (I was very embarrassed to have to wear mine for a couple of days when I broke my normal glasses)

Woodpecker1234 · 13/02/2017 20:48

It's OP here. Had to NC Because journos reported another thread I had commented on. Will be NCing again after this post too, so sorry won't be able to answer any more questions.

Car seat is isofix only, PILs had LO today
Managed to get an appointment at 9:30, £700 for 2 pairs of new glasses, wow! (Apparently our village has the most expensive opticians in the world, £55 per lense for a standard prescription, but needs must)
Worked from home am, wearing OHs glasses, which are pretty much the same prescription, but obviously not mine so give me a headache after a bit, but after spending £700 this morning I kind of need the money!
Expedited my glasses, will be here on Wednesday
For £700 they will be kept very well out of reach of both of cat and dog! Feel like I need a satin flipping cushion to keep them them on 🙄
Taxi tomorrow and Wednesday with DS. Taxi company can't guarantee isofix, nursery is two miles away. (But up a very large hill so walking would take forever) I know some MN's will be horrified at the thought but again needs must.
Pretty much wiped out any profits this week, it's not a good month to be losing money either (as I am on a day rate so short month is not ideal and just paid for our holiday, and it's my year end and seeing my bank account drained with taxes etc!)
Work was fine, I forget I am not an employee sometimes and contractually speaking I could send a designate of my own choosing to cover me if I had a day off... but still don't like the thought of coming across unprofessional.

Any way thanks for a lot of the practical advice, it's easy to fluster in a crisis and not think rationally, goodbye from woodpecker, who knows who I will be next!

PurpleDaisies · 13/02/2017 21:20

I know it's not the point if the thread but £700 for glasses?! You should have gone to specsavers.

SavoyCabbage · 13/02/2017 21:23

You should have! £700!

At least you have a puppy. 🐶

NapQueen · 13/02/2017 21:26

700 quid?????

witwootoodleoo · 13/02/2017 21:28

Just in case you've not thought of it you can often claim for damaged glasses on contents insurance

InvisibleKittenAttack · 13/02/2017 21:35

If they want you in the office a certain amount, then you do it. Sorry, you need to go in if you think the client won't be happy with you WFH.

If your contract is one that can be cancelled at short notice without needing a particular reason (most contractors I know are on that sort of contract), then you do what the client wants, even if it seems pointless in relation to getting your actual work done.

Taxi to work and try to get new glasses ASAP - if you have your prescription, try a supermarket near you. If there's a 24 hour one near you that does glasses, I'd borrow DH's glasses and go now.

MatildaTheCat · 13/02/2017 21:43

Isn't it more cost effect to order cheap glasses from the Internet using your prescription ( assumingbyouvare getting eyes tested tomorrow?) and save several hundred pounds? Seven hundred quid is insanely expensive.

Sounds as if you've worked out a way to cope for a few days so buying the more expensive option sounds like panic buying.

HopefulHamster · 13/02/2017 21:48

get some spares from glasses direct or similar...

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 13/02/2017 21:53

I had to have a night off from bar work because my then boyfriend stood on my glasses, they asked if I couldn't come in wearing my prescription sunglasses, but hadn't really thought through the whole 'really dark club' thing
