To wonder how much David Lloyd gym memberships cost?

AnaG1ypta · 12/02/2017 10:16

Our (fairly expensive already!) Virgin gym is being taken over by David Lloyd.

Some of the prices I've seen online for their gyms are horrendous!

Can anyone tell me what they're paying at the moment?

Our gym has tennis courts and a creche. At present we get three hours a day free creche use. Any idea if these are extra with DL?

Yes, I have been wondering the same as we are in the same boat. To be honest I can't see a price hike working; we are in a deprived area and the membership fee is already high. Lots of people left after the last price increase for the myriad of low-cost gyms and hotel gym memberships. I only stayed for the active kids sessions, but now that my sons go to rugby so often we aren't even using it much.

I haven't been impressed with the club recently; staffing levels have fallen and it is looking a bit shabby. If David Lloyd sort this then I may stay, but the announcement has made me think seriously about the cheaper alternatives available.

We pay £150 for the family for the month, we joined a while ago and the children are free.

Included in the price we get: unlimited gym access, all the fitness classes you want, kids classes evenings and weekends, swimming, outside pool and stuff like sauna etc. Kids are "racquets" members so if we want to play tennis we can as long as the court is booked in their name and a child is playing with the adult. ALso extra are things like tennis or swimming classes, the holiday childcare sessions.

We made a lot of use of it for a good few years but as soon as your kids hit 11 they are too old for the kids classes and too young for most of the other classes like Zumba or Circuits. We're leaving at the end of the month because we're just not using it like we used to.

Roomster101 · 12/02/2017 14:08

£85 a month and over £100 if rackets included.

Is that for one person peak time? Are there any discounts? I pay £75 a month for Virgin Active so that will be quite a price hike.

Roomster101 · 12/02/2017 14:09

I pay £96 for off peak at our David Lloyd. Peak would be £125.

That's really high! Are you in London?

Imhavingcheesefries · 12/02/2017 14:11

Quote from DL on who they were targeting

“Prosperous would be affluent. Families typically would live a couple of miles out of town and their ages would be 30 to 45, with a couple of kids, a large house.

“They’d have a disposable income and maybe a couple of holidays a year, two cars, one of them a 4x4,” said Mr Kohn.

Needless to say, a middle-class stereotype springs to mind.

But the David Lloyd brand is also keen to come across as “not just a posh gym” and accessible for mid-income families too."

That quote is from our local DL manager when asked who he thought his target market was.

It makes me cringe and die everytime I read it. I wouldn't join on principal!

BillyButtfuck · 12/02/2017 14:18

Our local one (ringwood) is £80 per month for an adult or £70 each if two people sign up as a couple plus £25 for kids I think over 2/3.
Crèche is £4.50 per child per hour.
It's a lot!
My mums a member and gets X amount of guest passes per month so we go with her every few weeks, j looked into joining but it's silly money for our situation. The amount we would go it would be cheaper to pay as a guest (£15 a time per adult) than to join.

Meffy · 12/02/2017 14:22

Wowser Bannatyne has just taken over our gym. It's had a total refit with technogym equipment and 2 extra studios. They had reduced the price we were paying. £38 a month. No crèche though so I go when kids are at school and they do Kuk Sool Won twice per week!

BarbaraofSeville · 12/02/2017 14:33

Sounds like Center Parcs. Deliberately make it a lot more expensive than the alternatives to keep the rif raf out.

gottaloveascamhun · 12/02/2017 14:36

Mine isn't a DL one but I pay 34.99 a month for unlimited swimming, gym and classes. I do one swim a week, one class and one gym session plus sometimes take DS swimming (he is free as under 8). The creche is 1.40 an hour.

WeldMeDaphne · 12/02/2017 14:38

OP I think you must be at the same virgin active as we are- giving serious thought to binning it, TBH as we're not sure we're getting our money's worth as it is. If they put the prices up we'll definitely be gone. It's also a 20ish mile round trip for us as there are no decent gyms on this side of town ☹️

gwenneh · 12/02/2017 14:42

Ours was about £70, but I was working at a company that had a special deal on for our employees.

AnaG1ypta · 12/02/2017 14:56

WeldMe - I'm at the one which used to have two Virgin gyms in the town. One got taken over by Nuffield.

I don't think it's worth more than we're paying now unless they offer a lot more inclusively.

AnaG1ypta · 12/02/2017 14:57

Ours already feels a little exclusive. I wouldn't like to go swimming in the council pools any more so I have been spoilt! It doesn't need to get any more so!

The variety of pricing seems a little frustrating. I like the clear pricing with Virgin.

Jellybean83 · 12/02/2017 15:03

AnaG1ypta there does seem to be a massive difference in pricing with DL, I can't believe people are paying more off peak for one adult membership than I'm paying for both peak adult and child membership. I'm in Scotland though, we're obviously a bit cheaper up here.

missfliss · 12/02/2017 15:04

I'm in the same boat OP. Only joined vitality in October and been using Virgin Active in Brighton. If the price goes up then we'll have to leave. It would be a shame because it's a great place to take our DS swimming.
I was especially looking forward to the outdoor pool there in summer.

Roomster101 · 12/02/2017 15:06

I agree. I really like the fact that virgin prices are online. For David Lloyd you have to speak to a rep first which makes me feel that they intend to pressurise you and that some people are paying less than others.

WeldMeDaphne · 12/02/2017 16:26

Yep, that's the one. The only thing that keeps me there is the outdoor pool- spent many a happy hour bobbing around in the sun while on may leave and waiting for DS to make an appearance! I think I might try something like cross fit or strength training at and independent gym... DH might stay, but as one of our kids is under 3 we can e d up paying 11 extra per visit if we want them in the crèche for 2 hours.

Allthebestnamesareused · 12/02/2017 16:47

Cambridge - 2 adults and 1 15 year old (no rackets but includes access to exclusive area for different sauna, jacuzzi, towel use etc) £225 per month (would cost another £50= if we had racket use too).

lottieandmia · 12/02/2017 22:07

If we had a virgin gym in my town then I would be going - no question. It annoyed me too that you can't get a straight answer on what the prices are. Once you see a rep they are also very hard sell.

AnaG1ypta · 13/02/2017 07:16

Oh no :( The spa area is my favourite bit.

We've just added racquets membership on. Was only £10 more with Virgin. :(

Looks like I need to prepare to give it up.

WeldMe - Small world! We barely went outdoors last summer. It was always so busy. Would have been lovely to cool down with a bump.

Does anyone know how much a David Lloyd gym memebership would be for a 15 year old girl?

fleurjasmine · 18/11/2017 19:27

I paid £80. It was a lot, but it felt like I was walking into an exceptionally luxurious spa every time I walked in, so I kept going.

Then I got ill Sad

AnnabellaH · 18/11/2017 19:54

It was £56 a month 16yrs ago. So probably just as terrifyingly high right now.

Turnocks34 · 18/11/2017 19:57

I pay £210 a month. This is for myself, husband, 3 year old and our 10 month old who is currently free.

We're cancelling when the year is up. We went in o it naively and it isn't worth the price for us (we don't do racquets or anything).
